Description

P. LAVOLD I DEVICE FOR OPENING LAMP ISOORS Nov. 9 1926.
Filed Oct. 5. 1924 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS PETER LAVOLD, OF VIROQUA, WISCONSIN.
DEVICE FOR OYPENING LAMP DOORS.
Application filed October 3, 1924.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for opening lamp doors, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device for opening lamp doors which is extremely simple in construction and which may be quickly applied to the lamp door and then turned so as to loosen the door upon the lamp casing.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device for opening lamp doors which acts as a wrench and which is pro vided with novel means for engaging wit. the knobs that are provided on the standard doors, whereby a turn of the wrench will rotate the lamp door with respect to the easing and loosen the door upon the casing.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device as shown operatively applied to a. lamp door, and
Figure 2 is a section along the line 22 of Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention I provide a frame 1 which is composed of side members 2 and end members 3. The frame may be made of metal or any other material, as desired. The form of the frame 1 is rectangular. Various other forms maybe employed other than the rectangular form without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
The frame carries cross pieces 4 of the shape shown in Figure 2. The ends of the pieces 4 are secured to the sides 2 by means ofra half-lap joint. The pieces are curved so as to extend over the rim 5 of the lamp door when the frame 1 is placed against the front of the door as shown in Figure 2. hen the frame is placed against the front of the door, as sho "n in Figure 2, the pieces 4; will have their adjacent surfaces 6 abut the periphery of the rim 5. The surfaces 6 have grooves 7 therein which are adapted to receive the knobs 8 of the rim. The frame may now be given a turn toward the Serial No. 741,448.
dotted line position shown in Figure 1 so as to rotate the rim 5 with respect to the casing, thus freeing the rim from the casing.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. It is a well known fact that when the rims of lamps become slightly rusty it is almost impossible to remove the rims from the lamps by hand. This is especially true when the lamp casings have been painted, since the paint flows into the crevices between the rim and the casing and acts as a cement. By the use of the device set forth in the present specification, a greater leverage can be applied to the rim whereby the rim may be removed from the casing. Certain of the standard lamps are provided with knobs 8 on the periphery of the rim, and I make use of these knobs in removing the rim from the casing.
hen removing the rim from the casing, the device is placed upon the front of the lamp door in the manner shown in Figure 2 so as to cause the pieces 4 to slide over the periphery of the rim. The grooves are aligned with the knob 8 before the device is applied to the rim. The rim is secured to the casing by means of a bayonet joint connection (not shown) and a slightturn of the frame 1 is sufiicient to-free the rim from the casing. The portion of the frame 1 which extends beyond'the pieces 4 act as handles and may be grasped by the operator when swinging the device into the dotted line position. The device is small enough to be carried in the ordinary tool kit of the automobile when not in use.
I claim:
A device of the type described compris 111g a frame adapted to bear against the outer surface of a headlight 'door, said frame extending beyond the periphery of the door, the extending portions constituting handles, door-engaging incn'ibers carried by said frame and having recesses adapted to receive the knobs carried by the door, said members extending tangently with respect to the periphery of the door and being shaped so as to engage with the knobs on the door when said frame abuts against the door.
