, This invent-ion relates to a branding die or stamp and wheel for mounting the same for use in stamping or branding articles of irregular exterior contour and is more particularly adapted for use in branding or stamp indioia or marks on walnuts.
An object of this invention is to provide a stamp or branding element, for use in stamping or branding marks on such articles as walnuts, which is of individual construction and may easily be secured to and removed from a branding or stamping wheel when worn or when it is desired to change the particular mark or indicia which is to be stam ed upon the nuts.
Ot er objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodi ment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in vertical section of a walnut branding machine illustrating a die wheel embodied in this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged end elevation of a die wheel and individual die or stamp embodying this invention.
Figure 3 1s a vertical end elevation illustrating the manner of mounting individual stamps or dies embodied in this invention.
Figure 4 isa perspective plan view of an individual stamp or die embodiedinthis i11- vention. v
In the preferred embodiment of this 'invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings 1 illustrates a chute into which the walnuts or articles to be stamped are fed and from which chute the walnuts are conveyed along an incline separating chamber 2 into a plurality of individual troughs 3. The construction and operation of which machine is specifically set forth in the patent issued to me for walnut branding machine, No. 1,593,991, on July 27, 1926. The walnuts leaving the troughs 3 travel through a second series of individual tr0ughs4 into a plurality of individual conveyor wheels 5 which have a plurality of pockets 6 formed therein. The wheels 5 being keyed to a shaft 7 which are journaled in bearings mounted in the frames 8 of the apparatus. A shaft9 is driven from a gear mounted on the shaft 7 as will be apparent from the disclosure in my copending-application above referred to. Keyed to the shaft 9 is a plurality of die wheels 10 which havea plurality of peripheral recesses 11 formed therein, which recesses are shaped by means of webs 12. Individual stamps 13 are mounted over the recesses 11, being positioned-or secured in position by means of'staples 14 which are inserted in bores 15 formed in the webs 12. There are two staples 14 foreach individual stamp 13. Stretched between the transversely extending section 16 of the staples 14 is a band 17, which .band 17 is looped over the transverse section 16 of the staples 14. The band 17 is constructed of an elastic material preferably rubber. The band 17 is stretched when the staples 14 are positioned within the bores 15 formed in the webs 12 so that the same exerts a force against the the ends of the staples 14 are thrown outtransverse section 16 of the staples 14, tend- 1' ing to throw these sectionstogether .so that by the staples are maintained within the position of the bores 15. Mounted upon the band 17 is a pad 18, which pad 18 is raised at its center 19, and which pad18-is secured to a block 20 having tapered sides 21 at theapex of the raised portion. The block 20 is preferably constructed of extremely soft resilient material such as sponge, rubber or the like. Secured to the face 22 of the block 20 is a stamp 23 which stamp 23 may be ofv any desired or preferred construction and is in practice constructed of rubber. In order to properly secure the sections of material together and to secure the ends of the bands 17 together so that the same will present a continuous band over the staples 14, a transversesection of material 24 is mounted be-. tween the opposite leads of the'band 17 and is vulcanized thereto. Having fully described a preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be un' derstood that I do not wish to be limited to the terms of the constructions :herein set forth which may obviously'be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
v 1. Astamp for printing on irregular surfaces comprising a pair of staples, a band connected between the staples and a formed stamp mounted upon the band.
2, A branding Wheel for stamplng or printing. on irregular surfaces, comprising a Wheel having a plurality of peripheral recesses shaped by Webs, a pair of staples mounted in the Webs, a band connected between each pair of staples, and a formed stamp mounted upon the said band.
3. An article of the class described, comprising a Wheel having a plurality 01 pe ripheral recesses formed therein, webs separating the recesses, and an lndlvidual stamp spanning each recess and connected at each end to the'web of the said Wheel.
4. In an article of the class described, the combination of a Wheel having a plurality of peripheral recesses, Webs separating the recesses, an individual stamp spanning each recess, and means for removably securing the ends of each stamp to the Webs separating the recesses. v
-5. An article of the class described, the combination of a Wheel having a plurality of peripheral recesses, a resilient band spanning each recess, a plurality of Webs separating each recess, and means for detachably securing each band in position across a formed stamp mounted upon the said band.
