SAMPLING TOOL.
I Application led December 14, 1925. Serial No. 75,481.
This invention relates to a sampling tool for use in obtaining oil samples from oil tanks `or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a sampling device .of this character which may be used to obtain a sample at any depth, which cannot stick or clog. which is easily adjusted, and which may be easily opened when it is desired to take the sample therefrom.
A further object resides in the provision of a sampling device of this character and having these advantages and which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and effective in operation and easy and coinparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had-to the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:

Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the sampler constituting the present invention includes a hollow body, designated generally at 1, and preferably made up of a hollow cylinder 2 of glass or the like protected by. curved guard plates of metal which' are held against thel glass cylinder by end lates 4 and 5 secured tov the guard plates 3 y screws 6. The guard plates have lugs 3 at their ends which abut the fend pieces 'or heads 4 and 5 and withl which the screws 6 co-avct. l Elastic packing rings 7 are interposed between the ends of the glass cylinder 2 and the end pieces or heads 4 and 5 as illustrated to advantage in Figure 2. Both of the end pieces 4 and-5 have annular flanges, designated at 8 and 9, respectively, flanges 8 and 9 snugly fitting over the ends of the cylinders as also seen to advantage in Figure 2.
The upper end piece or :head 4 is provided with a large central opening 10. The lower end piece or head 5 is provided with a plurality of openings 11 having the approxA imate form of a sector. A. closure is provided for the openings 11 and consists of a plate 12 having a hub 13, closure elements or ribs 14 provided with beveled edges 15 and a peripheral ring 16 provided with outwardly extended inclined lugs 17 and 18. The hub 13, closure ribs 14, peripheral ring 16 and the lugs 17 and 18 are all preferably cast or otherwise suitably formed integral. The hub 13 of the closure is suitably fastened, as at 19, to a pivot shaft 20 rotatably fitted in an opening 21 provided therefor in the lower end piece or head 5. At its upper end the shaft 20 is provided with a flange 22`which is integral therewith lor otherwise suitably fixed thereto. A torsional coil spring encircles the shaft 20 above the lower head 5 and has its lower end faseo 'y tened, as at 24, to the plate 5 and its upper i end fastened, as at 26, to the flange 22 of the shaft 20. The spring 23 is not only torsionally tensioned but is under` compression to a` slight extent so as to resiliently vhold the closure plate 12 snugly up against the underside of the lower end plate or-head 5 and also` maintain this closure plate` 12 in such angular position that its ribsorclosure elements 14 cover and close the openings 11.
The lugs 17 andA 18 alforda convenient means whereby the closure plate 12 may be turned against the tension of the spring 23 to move-the closure elements or ribs 14 out of registry with the openings 11, thereby opening the lower e'nd of the sampler.- Means is provided for releasably holding the closure plate in such open position and consists of a lock rod or holder rod 30 slidably fitted in guide openings provided therefor in lugs 31 on the end pieces'4 and 5. The lower end of the lock rod 30 is beveled, as indicated at 82 (see Fig. 6) and this lower beveled end is engageable with the lug 17 to hold the lug and the closure plate 12 lthe actiony of the coil spring 33 an in open position. The lock rod 30 is yieldably held in position to engage the lug 17 by means of an expansible coil spring 33 encircling the upper portion of the lock rod 30 and abutting the underside of the lug 31 of the end piece or head 4 at one end and a cotter pin 34 carried by the lock rod 30 at its lower end.
In order to trip or release the lock rod 'at any desirable distance above the bottom of the tank, a trip rod 35 is provided and is slidably fitted in a guide opening 36 provided in the lower end.' The upper end of the trip rod 35 carries a block 36 havinga pair of arms 37 which have. openings 1n which the lock rod 30 is slida-bly fitted. A spring catch or latch 38 is provided and has one end fastened, as by means of a screw 39, to the block 36. The other end portlon of the spring latch or catch member 38 is disposed in between the arms 37 and by virtue of its inherent resiliency presses up against the lock rod 30. The lock rod 3()` is provided at spaced intervals with notches 40 with which the catch 38 is selectively cooperable. The lower end of the trip rod 35 projects below the sampler and the extent to which it so projects may be regulated by sliding it along the lock rod and securing it in adjusted position thereon by engaging its latch 38 with the selective notch 40. When the trip rod strikes the bottom of the tank .it moves the lock rod 30 upwardly a aiinst 1sengages the lower end of the lock rod from the lug 17, thereby permitting the spring 23 to swing the closure plate 12 to closed position.
A bail 50 is connected with the upper head Vor end piece 4 and has an eye 51 to facilitate its attachment to a lowering line chain or catch pole, said bail constituting with said chain or line means for lowering th(` sampling device. In the construction illustrated one arm of the bail 50 has a trunnion 52 which is engaged in a bearing 53 provided on the upper end piece 4. The other arm of the .bail has an extension 54 provided with an opening; 55 receiving the outturned upper end 56 of the lock rod. A
i In the use of the device the closure plate 1Q is swung to open position and is held in such position by the lock rod 30. The device is then lowered into the oil and the oil passes in through the openings 11 and out through the upper open end until the sampler is in the region where it is to take a sample. The closure plate is then closed by jerking the lowering line to cause the bail 5() to ride the lock rod upwardly and disengage it from the lug i7 ot' the closure plate or by 1. A sampler of the character described comprising a body having open ends, a closure forone of the open ends, means for biasing the closure to closed position, means for holding the closure in open position, and lowering means connected with said last mentioned means andv adapted to be operated to release the same.

A sampler of the character described including a body having open ends, a closure for one of the-ends, said closure having an integral projection, means for biasing the closure to closed position, a slidable spring pressed lock rod directly enga cable with the integral projection of the c osure `for holding the closure in open position, and means for disengaging said lock rod from the closure.
3. A sampler of the character described including a body having open ends, a closure for one of the ends, means for biasing the closure to closed osition, a spring pressed lock rod for holding the closure in open position, and means for disenga 'ng said lock rod from the closure and 1nc uding a bail connected with the'lock rod and adapted to be connected with the lowering means.
4. A sampler of the character described including a body having o en ends, a closure for one of the ends, said closure having an vintegral projection, means for biasing the closure to closed position, a slidable spring pressed lock rod directly engageable with the inteal rojection of the closure for holding t e c osure to open position, means for disengagingsaid lock rod from the closure and including a trip rod en ageable with the bottom of the tank, an a justable connection' between the tri rod and the llock rod includin a bloc 'slidably mounted on the lock ro and releasable in- -terengaging means between the block and the lock rod.
5. A sampler of the character described including a body having open ends, a closure for one of the ends,means for biasing the closure to closed position, a spring pressed lock rod for holding the. closure to open position, means for disengagin said lock rod from the closure and inclu ing a trip rod engageable with the bottom of the tank, an ad'ustable connection between the trip rod an the lock rod including a bloc-k slidably mounted on the lock rod, and releasable intel-engaging means between the block and the lock rod and consisting. of a spring-pressed latch member mounted on the block, said lock rod having a plurality of notches with which the latch member is selectively engageable.
6. In a sampler, a body including a cylinder, end pieces connected with the cylinder, guard plates fastened to the end pieces and protecting the same, one of the end plates having an unobstructed opening, the other end plate having a plurality of openings and a rotatable closure for said other end plate including a hub pivotally mounted on such end plate, closure elements carried by the hub, and a peripheral ring connecting the closure elements.
