SHOWER SHIELIl FOR. BATHTUBS.
Application filed June 8, 1925. Serial No. 34,691.
My invention relates to improvements in protecting shower shields or splash barriers for bath-tubs and the like; It has in view to provide an adjustable shield member capable of being mounted by hinge or other swinging connection with a wall in juxtaposition to the tub and adapted to be swung into registering relation with its outer edge for use, or to be swung away therefrom, together with means for fixedly holding it in position, adapted to operate in the manner more fully hereinafter described.
Incidentally, the device is so constructed as to provide a holding frame for a light of plate glass or panel of other suitable material together with sealing elements, a mounting and frame adapted to prevent passage of water to the hinges or outwardly beyond, and other detail features of construction as hereafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, illustrating one preferred embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 is a view in sectional elevation showing the invention as applied.
Fig. 2, a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional detail view showing the door in vertical section, on the line IIL- HI of Fig. 1 partly broken away.
Fig. 4 is a similar view in cross section, on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 2 represents an ordinary commercial standard bath-tub, usually of porcelain ware, located against the side'and end walls 3 and 4 respectively and provided with the usual fixtures.
5 is a rectangular frame preferably formed of sheet metal construction as indicated in Figs. 3 and 1, surrounding inner wooden frame members 6 and adapted to support within its surrounding portion a light 7 of plate glass or other panel. Said light is mounted within the overlapping flanges of an outer supporting andholding flanged frame 8 secured to the inner edge portion of main frame 5 by holding screws, at regular intervals.
On the inner side of the framing is a hollow metal strip or bar 9 secured against the inner edge portion of the frame 5 by holding screws 10. Between the outer flanged strips 8 and inner members 9, the light 7 is clamped with an intervening packing gasket 11 of rubber or other suitable material.
The inner edge portion of frame 5 is provided with a vertically arranged continuous series of hinges 12 secured to the inner edge of the inner metallic frame 5 and to the base flange 13 of a supporting L shaped frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Said frame of angle shape is mounted against the end wall t and held thereon by securing screws 14-. The hasps of hinges 12 are secured against its base at one side and to frame 5 at the other side in the same way.
The L shaped frame 13 is provided at its inner side with a flange 15 extending inwardly and providing an abutting wall,
against which the inner face of the main frame 5 lies when in closed position. By such construction I not only provide a strong stable support for the hinged con nection between the swinging shield and the end wall, but also completely protect the. entire series of hinges from splashing. v
A further advantage of such construction is that the space between the frame and the wall is covered so as to prevent the possibility of insertion and pinching of the fingers, of anything else tending to prevent free closing movement.
For the purpose of fixedly holding the shield in closed position, as in Fig. 2, it is provided with a loosely connected bracing arm 16 adapted to be inserted by hooked terminal 17 in a holding bracket 18 secured to the end wall 1 by screw or bolt 19. The other end of arm 16 is loosely connected by eye bolt 20 to the upper cross framing member 5 of the shield as in Fig. 8, thereby providing for easy and quick connection and disconnection.
As shown, the shield is mounted with rela tion to the outer edge of tub 2 so as to just clear it in swinging to or from its operative position.
For the purpose of further protecting the exterior area of the bathroom from splashing, a shield or skirt 21 of sheet metal IOU or other suitable material is secured along the upper inner edge of the lower frame member 5, between rail 9 and its upper inner edge, in the manner shown in Fig. 8. The latter-device may be of any suitable shape, and if desired may be of rubber or other similar material and of sufficient depth to lie across the intervening space if desired.
The construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood and appreciated from the foregoing description. The metal parts of the frame may be nickel plated or otherwise finished in various ways, and the light 7 of plate glass when mounted therein and hung in position provides not only an effective protection, but is an attachment of considerable ornamental value. When not in use it may be disconnected as to brace 16, and swung outwardly towards or against the end wall in the manner suggested bythe dotted line position of Fig. 2.
The device is strong and substantial, continuously effective, not liable to deterioration or breakage, and is of great advantage and usefulness, in connection with the usual shower bath attachment, as clearly shown.
It, may be made in various heights or widths dependent on working conditions and in different designs dependent on the mate- -'rial used, specificationsiof the other equipvided with an inner rectangular, flange, and
supporting, hinges connecting the shield theretolbehind said flange.
2. In combination with a vertically arranged supporting L-shaped base member having a rear. protecting and abutting flange, a .rectangularframe provided with a light of plate glass, hinges connecting one edge portionof the frameiwith the base member behind said flange and means for holding the frame in position.
3. The combination with a bath-tub and an adjacent wallsurface provided with an attached L-shaped baseextending vertically an adjacent wall surface provided with an atr ,tach'ed L-shaped base. extending vertically above. one corner of the tub and having a rearinwardly- ,extending rectangular flange,
an outwardly opening rectangular frame iaving a plate. glass light tightly clamped therein and hingedtothe base with swinging V clearanceabove the edgeof the tub, and a loosely: connected brace armon the upper edge of the frame having a hook terminal for connection with a fixed holding socket.
5. Incombination with a vertically arran ed supporting L-shaped basewmember having a rear protecting and abutting flange, a rectangular frame provided with an inserted panel, oppositely located clamping and holding-strips secured to the frame of the panel, a continuous U-shaped packing gasket between-the holding strips and the edge portions of the panel, anda resilient splash strip secured between one of saidholding strips and the bottom member of the frame and extending outwardly therefrom.
