DOOR-FRAME AND METHOD OF INSTALLING THE SAME.
Application filed March 22, 1926. Serial No.19,546.
My inventionrelates to door frames and more particularly to a method of installing a door frame for enclosures such as shower stalls, lined with tile, brick or thelike, hereinafter referred to merely as tile, although which term is intended to include brick or other material-V I Heretofore the door frames for such enclosures havebeen installed after the tile is set, necessitating alignment of the frame stiles along a previously set surface. Not infrequently irregularities occurring insetting the tile result in breahagegof the tile when the frame stiles are appliedor in irregular spacing between the'franie and. tile, and the method of framing commonly employed also necessitates an interruption of work because of the necessity for the tile setting by work men other than those employediii thesgeneral erection of the building.
it is the object of my invention to provide a door frame for use in connection with tile lined enclosures, such as shower stalls, which can be madeupat a factory and shipped to a point of use for installation by the workmen coi'nii'io-nly employed on this, class of con structioin-and whereby proper alignment of the tiling in the opening relative to the door frame is insured without breakage of the tiletand without undue loss of time in the erecting operation.
in accomplishing this object I provide an interior frame including gage stiles which may be erected in the door opening and about,
which the tile may be set in proper alignment. After the tile has been set the gage stiles are removed and the permanent door frame installed thereby insuring alignment and avoiding breakage of the tile.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of an interior frame equipped with gage stiles, showing the parts prior to theapplication of the tile.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the tiled wall with its door opening, a part of the wall being broken away to show the interior frame and one of the gagestiles being re moved. I
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a shower enclosure including a door and door frame constructed and installed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-4, Fig. 1, illustrating the interior frame with its gage stile.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on tlieline 5+5, Fig. 2, illustrating the parts shown in Fig. eland in addition thereto, the tile set about-the interiorframe within the gage stile.
' Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 55,
Fi '.,2 showin the ga e stile removed;
2... p. p I Fig. JS'EL similar view on therline ll,
Fig. 3, showing the permanent outer door frame-and door in place.
Fig. 8, is a vertical sectionof the -lower portion of the dooron the -line,8'8,-Fig. 3. Referring more in detail to the drawings,
1 designates the studding arranged to form a doorropening 2 of standard size for a shower stall or like 'opening adapted for tile lining. Set in the frame 1 is an angle iron border 8, the flange-4 ofwhichoverlies the outer face of the studding frame and;
is secured thereto by screws or other fastening devices 5, the other flange of the angle lying within the wooden frame and having threaded apertures 6 through which screws or like fastening devices 7 may be threaded into the frame. 9
Fastened to the frame by the screws 7 ferrules 8 for spacing gage stiles 9 from the vertical walls of the frame to provide a uniform space within which tiling maybe set, the gage stilesconsisting of angle irons, each having a flange bearing against the ends of the ferrules and held thereto by the ,ister with other like tile members to enclose the ferrules and form a continuous surface within the door opening. When the tile is set it is alignedby the gage stiles so that the side walls of the opening are plumb. After the tile has been set the i gage stiles are removed and a permanent metal frame 12 set into the tile lined door the interior door frame to permanently and securely attach the permanent door frame in place.
When the permanent door frame has been set as described, the door 14C is hung, the door being of any suitable construction adapted for use in connection with this kind of an enclosure, but preferably provided with a flexible, water-proof strip 15 and a gutter 16 at its lower edge for sealing the bottom of the door opening and catching moisture condensing on the door or splashed thereinto to prevent escape of the water from the stall when the door is employed in connection with a shower stall or like enclosure, the gutter 16 being closed at its ends and having a drain spout 17 back into the stall, to prevent flow of water from the gutter into the corners of the door frame.
It is apparent that with a door frame constructed and assembled as described, loss of time in installation is avoided because of the setting of the tile in the pre-formed frame. Loss of time and material is also avoided be cause of the gaging of the tile during the setting operation so that when the permanent frame is installed there will be no uneven tightening of the frame which ordinarily tends to break up the tile.
It is also apparent that a door frame constructed in accordance with my invention is more sightly than one of the ordinary type for the reason that alignment of the tile is insured and uneven spacing of the tile from the door frame is obviated.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The method of erecting door frames for shower stalls or the like, consisting of erecting a permanent interior frame.
mounting temporary gage stiles on the interior frame in spaced relation thereto, applying tile to the interior frame within the gage stiles, removing the gage stiles and erecting a permanent exterior frame within the tiled opening.
2. The method of erecting door frames for shower stalls or the like, consisting of erecting a permanent interior frame, mounting temporary gage stiles on the interior frame in spaced relation thereto, applying tile to the interior frame within the gage stiles, removing the gage stiles, erecting an exterior frame within the tiled opening and attaching the exterior frame to the interior frame by fastening devices extended through the tile.
'3. The method of erecting door frames for shower stalls or the like, consisting of erecting a permanent interior frame, mounting temporary gage stiles on the interior frame by extending fastening devices through the stiles and through spacing ferrules into the temporary frame, setting tile between the interior frame and the gage stiles. removing the gage stiles and fastening devices, and erecting an exterior frame within the tiled opening by extending fas toning devices through the frame and ferrules into the interior frame.
4-. A door frame for shower stalls com prising an interior frame, spacing ferrules, an outer frame, fastening devices extending through the outer frame and ferrules into the interior frame to hold the outer frame in spaced mounting on the interior frame,
and tile set between the frames and about the ferrules.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY F. ZAHNER.
