UNITED STATES GEORGE 3'. FOX, 01? PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA.
SPARK ARRESTED. AND SMOIIE'ELIMINATOR.
Application filed September 29, 1922. Serial No. 591,218.
My invention consists of a novel construction of a spark arrester and smoke elimlnator, which is adapted to be readily attached to cupola stacks and smoke stacks or the like, of any character,'whereby I am en-' abled, by the install n of device to eliminate sparks, oxides nd carbon from the fumes emitted from said stack, said fumes beingcaused by my novel apparatus to pass through a curtain orwall of water of such a character that sparks, oxides, carbon and the like will be entrapped within the arrester whereby the waste gases which finally emerge from my novel apparatus are purified of certain deleterious elements or impurities.
T o the above ends my invention consists of a novel construction of a casing having an upper outlet for the'purified gases below which I locate means for creating the curtain or wall of water which is received in a suitable lower receptacle provided with a drain pipe, and an overflow, so that the apparatus is at all times automatic in its operation after having once been installed in position with respect to the stack.
It further consists of other novel features as will be hereinafter vention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a form thereof which isat present preferred by me, since it will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which. my invention consists can "be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described. a
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional View of a spark arrester and smoke eliminator embodying my invention, certain of the parts being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 represents a section on line 22 F'gure 1.
Figure 3 represents a sectionalview. of another embodiment of my invention which ma be employed t imilar numerals ofreference, indicate corresponding parts in the figures.v
Refe 'ringto the drawings.
In carrying out my invention which is adapted to be applied to the upper portion of a cupola stack or smoke stack as 1, I
employ an outer casing 2, which is prefer ably circular or annular in contour and which is provided at its lower portion with a base member 3, the inner portion of said base member fitting nicely around the upper portion of the smoke stack 1, and being supported with respect thereto by any suitable inleans, as angle irons or brackets 4:, or the ire.
The annular casing member 2 may be prolonged downwardly to form the lower conical member'fi, whose lower end as indicated at 6 contacts with and/incloses the stack 1, so as to-give the upper portion of the latter a neat and finished appearance, when my invention is installed thereon.
The base member 3 is provided with a- 1O deslgnates an inner annular vertical wall, which is supported upon the base member 3 and secured with respect thereto by the outer annular l.-iron orangle iron 11 and the inner annular L-iron or angle iron 12, the lower edge of said wall 10 being riveted or otherwise securedto said angle irons.
- The junction of the outer edge of the base member 3 with the lower inner surface of the vertical outer wall 2 is also provided with an annular L-iron or angle iron 13 and I preferably caulk the, upper-edges of the annular angle.irons 11 and 13, so that an annular water tight chamber, which I have-designated as 14 is formed between the outer. upright wall 2, the horizontal base member or wall 3 and the inner wall 10.
For the purpose of. reinforcing the upper edge of the inner wall 10, I provide the latter with the annular angle iron 15 which may be riveted or otherwise secured thereto,
and to the inner'surface of the wall 10, I secure theilower ends of the arms-16, which have the upper inwardly deflected terminals i 17, upon which the conical shaped roof or 'bafile 18 is supported.
19 designates uprights having the. feet 20, which are secured to the roof 18 and the upper terminals 21, upon which is supported the perforated plate or conical or dished :tive overflow will be provided therefor.
water distributing device, which is providedv water baflie having the central opening 27 which; is secured to the upper end of the outer casing 2 preferably by means of the outer annular, angular ring 28, which is riveted or othewise secured to the upper outer end of the casing 2, The interior surface of the annular casing 2 is reinforced at various intervals by means of the angular uprights 28, which are spaced apart as seen in Figure 2, and it will be evident that a very strong, rigid and durable structure is provided which can be cheaply manufactured and assembled by using standard rolled metal shapes.
29 designates a manhole opening in the bottom member or wall 3 above which is the cover 30 which is secured in any suitthe her, it will be understood that the fumes,
gases, oxides, carbon and the like will be ssuing through the-stack 1.
Water having been admitted throughthe pipe 24, will fall upon the perforated plate 22 and will flow through the perforations and over the outer peripheral edge thereof onto member 18. A film is formed by the water drippin from the edge of member 18, through w 'ch film the fumes issuing from the stack 1 must pass, it being apparent that the outer peripheral edge of the roof member 18 overhangs both the top of the stack 1 and the outer edge of the annular angle iron or flange 15. n
The sparks, oxides, carbon and other products of combustion will first impinge on the bottom of the baflie 18 and then be deflected laterally towards and through the liquid curtain, and will be arrested by said vertical curtain or wall of water and then precipitated into the annular chamber 14 land will automatically flowtherefrom through point. a
In case the water level within the annular the port 7 and pipe 8 to any desired chamber 14 should arise to the height in- I 'dicated by the port 9, seen at the right of Figure 1, it will be apparent that an eflec- V ments may be assembled in other ways The purified fumes, gases and the likef after passing through the curtain of water flowing over the peripheral edge of the member 18, pass to the atmosphere through thefinalcentral exit opening 27, the deleterious impurities being trapped in the annular chamber 14. l
Upon the removal of the manhole cover 30, access can be readilychad to the chamber 14, asis evident.
It will consequently be seen from the foregoing construction that I have provided a novel and effective means, whereby sparks, oxides, carbons and the like ,Will be entrapped and eliminated from the fumes emitted from the stack to which my invention is applied.
In the construction seen in Figure 3, I have shown a device wherein the roof member 18 and its supports 16 conform to the structure seen in Figure 1,; as well as they uprights 10 supported upon the roof member 18.
lnvlieu of the perforated conical or dishshaped roof 22, seen in Figure 1, I may employ the conical solid member 32 against the bottom of which the incoming water is discharged through the outlet 33 which isattached to the water supply pipe '34.
It will be apparent that the principle of my invention is the same in both cases, since the water impinging on the member 18 will flow therefrom in the shape of an umbrella e curtain or wall in both constructions, seen in Figures 1 and 3 andwill efl'ectively charged from the stack 1 and impinge upon the bottom of the roof member 18.
shown the outer casing 2 as'having a circular or annular contour, the same may have any other desired contour without depart- 7 ing from the spirit of my invention, and
while I have shown the preferred manner of assembling the bottom member 3 and the upright walls 2 and 10 and the-roof member 18, so that a structure "possessing the requi site rigidity and durablility may be produced, it will be apparent that these elewithout departing from the spirit of my invention.
It will be apparent that the baflle 18 in boththe'constructions seen in Figures 1 and 3 Serve to deflect laterally the fumes issuing fromthe stack and that said bafile is keptcool in the construction seen in Figure 1 by .the water dropped thereon through the ports 23 and in the construction seen in Figure the baflle 18 is he t cool by'the water falling purify the fumes or gases which are dis- 1 thereon. In bothe constructions seen in through in the statement of the invention and the .above description, and while I have in the present instance, shown and described a'preferred embodiment thereofwhich will give in practice. satisfactory 'and' reliable results,
it Is to be understood that such embodiment ,is susceptible of modification in ,various particulars without departing M from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing 1 an of its advantages.'
aving thus described my invention what I claim as.' new and desire "to secure by:
