A. s. JORDY GOLF GRIP Oct. 26 1926.
Filed Dec. 31, 1924 Wxrnsssssu a v v r m G improved .grip.
Patented Oct. 26, 1926. UNITED STATES 1,604,696 PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. JORDY, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE CORRECT GOLF GRIP COMPANY.
GOLF GRIP.
Application filed December 31; 1924. Serial No. 759,105.
This invention relates to grips for the handles or shafts of playing clubs more particularly-golf clubs.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved reinforced and balanced golf-grip in the form of a sheath or tube of the general type set forth in the Armstrong Patent No. 1,488,900,-April 1, 1924, and which may be applied to the shaft of the club by an expanding tool of the type shown in'the Armstrong Patent No. 1,488,- 901, April 1, 1924.
A further object of the invention is to provide a golf grip which has a comfortable feel to the hand when the club is grasped, and also has anovel end portionrwhich as sists the hand in properly and effectively gripping the club as well as enhancing the the appearance and Wearing qualities of the grip. That is to say, the invention contemplates a grip having an enlarged integral head portion which has the effect of steady-' ing the club in the left hand by providing a more natural and greater. gripping surface for the palm and fingers of the hand, and also preventing slipping or turning of the shaft of the club after it has been grasped preliminary to starting the back swing.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. 7
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of the Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference figures of the drawings.
In carrying the invention into effect it is proposed, as previously indicated, to provide a tubular elastic grip comprising a body or sheath 1 havin the sight line or marker 2 thereon for indicating the correct axis of the club to show the player how to grip the club to properly line up and adcharacters designate corresponding parts throughout the several grizlss the club head with reference to the The lower end of the sheath or tube 1 which is pi'eferably made of rubber or equivalent material is preferably beveled or tapered in the direction of the length of the tube as indicated at 3 thereby to provide a relatively flexible cuff which materially assists in initially placing the grip onthe shaft of the club, and also when in place, provides a finishing mask for concealing the place where the wr'appings of the old grip were removed.
The upper end of the grip is preferably formed with an enlarged or over-thickened head portion 4 which may be of tapering bulbous or equivalent formation as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 thereby to provide an integral head or knob for the grip which has numerous advantages both from the standpoint of utility and economy in the use of the grip. That is to say, the enlarged head portion 4, being integral with the tubular member avoids the necessity of utilizing a special finishing cap for the end of the club, while at the same time by reason of such enlargement the hollow or palm of-the players hand and the little finger thereofmore position with reference to the ball, as the club is maniplated through the back swing and then through the down stroke and against the ball. Therefore, the enlarged head portion gives the muscles of the small fingers a good place to anchor and avoids the desire to change the grip as the club is drawn backward thereby steadying the swing and giving the player greater confidence on his down stroke.
Furthermore, the enlarged head portion 4 serves to reinforce the upper end of the tube, and thereby increases its life. The result of gripping the club firmly has the effect of pinching or crimping the material of which the tube ismade, but by making the overagainst each other in placing the club in the bag and removing the same therefrom, but by reinforcing the end as proposed herein, the roughening or breaking of the grip from this cause-is also avoided.
The said enlarged head portion 4: may be provided with a plurality of annular ribs or rings 5 or their equivalent which run circumferentially of the shaft When the grip is applied thereto and have the efl'ect of providing anti-slipping means whichcom fortably embed themselves into the flesh.
The present grip therefore provides a novel flexible cuff and finishing mask portion 3 at one end of the tube and an enlarged, relatively bulbous head portion or knob 4 at the other end, the said knob constituting a grip for the palm of the hand which materially assists the player in the manipulation of the club.
It Will be observed that the bore of the sheath 1 opens through both ends thereof, thereby permitting and facilitating the aptegral enlarged head portion for the engagement of the palm and fingers of one hand according to hether the player is a right or left hand player.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it Will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claim. f
I claim p As an article of manufacture, a golf club grip comprising a tubular rubber sheath opening-through both ends and having the Wall portion at one end thereof thinned to provide a flexible finishing mask at the bottom open end, a palm and finger gripping knob formed at the top open end by a progressively thickened part of the sheath, and a series of annular rings formed on said thickened portion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
ALBERT S. JORDY.
