IMPROVEMENT lN LAMP-BURNERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 60,451, dated March 2, 1875; application filed January 16, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER MCKINLEY, of Tremont, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Burner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Fig.3, a plan view.

The object of my invention is to provide a lamp-burner of improved construction, which shall be simple and detachable in all its parts, and, in consequence of the same, more convenient to clean, and easy to keep in repair. 1t consists in a burner-cap provided with a groove, in combination with a detachable wick-tube, a detachable set of spur-Wheels for adjusting the wick, and a detachable shaft for operating said wheels. It also consists in the peculiar construction of the spur-wheels, and in the manner of fastening the devices together.

In the drawing, A represents the burnercap, which is fitted upon the lamp, and provided with a central extension, B. Through said extension passes a groove, a, for the wick-tube, and beside it a channel, b, to allow the escape of the gas from the oil-receptacle. O is the wick-tube, which is slotted at c to ad mit the teeth of the spur-wheels, provided 'with a lip at d to prevent the dropping of sparks down the gas-channel, and has an extension, e, which prevents the wick-tube from rising as the wick is elevated. D are the spur-wheels, which consist of two disks provided with circumferential grooves, and afterward serrated or toothed for the purpose of engaging the wick, the object of the circumferential grooves being to admit the penetration of the teeth deeper into the wick, and thereby insure the clutching of the same. The said wheels are connected by means of a barrel, f, which rests upon the extension 0 of the wick-tube, and through which passes a revolving shaft, E, the shaft being made square or octagonal in shape, and the inside of the barrel to conform to it, so that, while admitting of a lateral adjustment, they both revolve rigidly together. F is a milled head, by means of which the shaft E is rotated; and G is a boss, rigidly attached to the same, and which with the catch H prevents the withdrawal of the shaft and the separation of the devices.

In theplace of the catch, however, I may use a rod or stud moving in a sheath or tube, and engaging the boss at right angles to the shaft; or I may dispense with both boss and catch, and use a spring-latch attached to said shaft.

I am aware of the fact that lamp-burners have been constructed heretofore with detachable wick-tubes and detachable spur-wheels for elevating the wick but these are unlike mine in that they are of different construction, and are not detachable in all of their parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the burner cap A, of a detachable wick-tube, 0, a detachable set of spur-wheels, l), and a detachable shaft, E, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a lamp -burner, the set of toothed wheels D, having the circumferential grooves, and adapted, by reason of a connecting-barrel, to move laterally upon a shaft, and revolve rigidly with it, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with shaft E, of the boss G and catch H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
