DRILL GAUGE.
Application filed June 11, 1925.
This invention relates to an improved gauge by means of which the end of a drill may be measured to ascertain whether or not the point is properly centered.
The primary object is to provide an exceedingly simple gauge which merely comprises a bar, one edge of which provides a straight edge against which the drill is placed, together with an adjustable rule or gauge strip mounted at an angle upon the bar in a way to permit the drill to be gauged.
()ther specific structural details, resulting in advantages, will become apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like lllll'l'lGl'itiS are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a gauge tool constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the manner of using the same.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation, and
Figure 3 is a detail section taken approximetely upon the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Retering to the drawing in detail, the reference character 1 designates a flat bar which is provided adjacent its top and across one face with a diagonal groove. Adapted for sliding in this groove is a gauge piece which comprises a flat metal strip 2 having an angularly directed end portion 3. It should be noted that this end portion is disposed at an approximate obtuse angle to the longitudinal axis of the strip, and that the surfaces of the divergent under edges form a substantial V-shaped seat for reception of the pointed end of the drill at to determine the proper angular proportion of the free end of the drill. Just below the diagonal groove is a screw threaded opening into which a screw threaded set screw 5 is screwed. This set screw is provided with a retaining disc fixed intermediate its ends which is adapted to bear against and clamp the strip 2 in different adjusted positions. A considerable portion of the set screw is allowed to project and forms a finger grip 7. This is knurled or otherwise roughened to provide a good grip.
Serial No. 36,452.
In practice, the drill is placed alongside of the bar 1 as represented in Figure l, and the strip 2 is placed in the diagonal grooves. The strip is adjusted back and forth to accommodate the particular size of drill to be gauged, and when the gauge strip is in proper position, the set screw is turned to clamping position to hold the parts in adjusted position.
Persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understainling of the same after reading the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Jifhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit ot the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 1. A gauge of the class described comprising a bar provided in one side with a diagonal groove, one edge of said bar being straight and fiatand providing a straight edge against which a drill is adapted to be placed, a flat metal strip slidably received in said groove, said strip including a body portion and a free end portion and the free end portion being disposed at an obtuse angle to the longitudinal axis of the body portion, and the line bisecting said angle being parallel to the longitudinal edge of the bar, and a set screw carried by said bar and engageable with said strip for holding the latter in various adjusted positions.
2. A gauge of the class described comprising a bar provided in one side with a diagonal groove, one longitudinal edge of said bar being straight and Hat and providing a straight edge against which a drill is adapted to be placed, a fiat strip of metal slidabl received in said groove, said groove being of a depth corresponding to the thickness oi said strip to render the outer surface of the strip flush with an adjacent face of said bar, said strip including a body portion and a free end portion and the free end p01' finger grip and an outstanding flange, said tion of said strip being disposed at an obtuse flange being adapted to bear against said 10 angle to the longitudinal axis 01 the body strip to hold the latter in various adjusted portion of the strip and the line bisecting positions.
said angle being parallel to the longitudinal in testimony whereof 1 affix my signaedge of the bitl,&l1l a set screw threaded into ture.
a serew threaded opening in the bar adjacent said groove, said set screw embodying a JOHN A. XVOLFE. I
