IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,407, dated March 2, 1875; application filed J anuary 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN J. EUBANK, of Winchester, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my umbrella, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 are detail views of the same.

The main object of my invention and improvement of umbrellas and parasols is to so construct the several parts and connect them together that, should any one or more of them break, they can be readily replaced by duplicates furnished by the trade.

Another object ofmy invention is to stren gthen the stafi of the umbrella by means of a notched rib, the notches in which receive a s .)ring-catch on the slide, and hold the umbrella open or shut.

Another object of my invention is to pivot the ribs and braces to collars by means of staples, so that the attachments will be independent of each other, as will be understood lrom the following description.

In the annexed drawings, A designates the stafl' of the umbrella, which has formed on or secured to it a rib or fin, a, which has notches a a in its edge, located near its ends, and adapted to receive the lipped end of a springlatch, b, for holding the umbrella open or shut. B designates a tubular slide, to which the spring-latch b is pivoted, and on which a circular flange, 0, is formed. This flange c has radial slots d in its periphery corresponding in number to the number of braces used, which slots are intersected by an annular groove, 6, and on each side of each slot 11 a hole is made through the flange c. The perforated ends of the braces 0 have staples f through them, which staples are adjusted in the holes through the flangecwhen the braces are in their places. The pivotal ends of the braces and their staples are held in their places by means of a radially-slotted cap, 0, and a handled washer, h, which latter is internally notched, so as to slip past a stud, i, on the slide B, and when this washer is turned slightly its inner edge will pass beneath the stud t, thus holding the cap 0 tightly upon the flange 0. The upper or pivotal ends of the ribs 1) are attached to staples f, which are inserted into a flange, and confined in their places precisely as the pivotal ends of the braces are confined. At a suitable point on each rib a notched fin, g, is permanently secured, in which an eye is formed that receives a pivot-pin, lo, to which the outer end of a brace, O, is attached. The pin 70 having been passed through the said eye of fin g, and through an eye formed on a brace, is held in its place by adjusting its head in a notch, n, as shown in Fig. 9.

Fig. 1 shows the braces 0 attached to the ribs D by eyes formed on both of them.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure v by Letters Patent, is-

l. The notched rib a, in combination with the stafl' A and a spring-catch, b, as and for the purposes described.

2. The flanges c, slotted, grooved, and perforated, as described, in combination with the slotted cap 0, the washer h, and the stud z, substantially in the manner and for the purposes specified.

3. Fins g on ribs D, provided with eyes and notches, in combination with pins it, having heads on them, for the purpose described.
