LIGHTING FIXTURE.

The present invention relates to lighting fixtures such as wall brackets, ceiling -fixtures, and the like, and particularly fixtures of the type wherein the wall or ceiling portion of the fixture comprises a wired unit and the bracket or hanging portion of the fixture comprises a second wired unit, the latter being adapted to be detachably connected mechanically and electrically to the 1 former, the electrical connection being made by means of a receptacle and plug connection.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved structure and arrangerecent in apparatus of this character, and for a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the accompanying description and the claims appended thereto.

My invention relates more particularly to ceiling fixtures, and in the drawing l have illustrated it as embodied in such a fixture, but 'it will be understood that it is not necessarily limited thereto.

Referring to the drawing, 10 indicates the face plate of a flush plug receptacle and 11 a plug receptacle fastened to the rear side of plate 10 by screws 12 and provided with the usual openings 13 in line with which are contacts 14. ;Plate 10 may be fastened to a wall or to a suitable outlet box by screws 15. Projecting downwardly from casing 27 is a pair of spaced ears 32 on which is pivoted a U-shaped yoke 33 which carries a threaded nipple 34:. Ears 32 may be formed integral with a strap 35 which is located in a transverse groove 36 in block 20, the ears projecting through slots 37 in casing 27. This arrangement provides a strong simple structure and one which is compact and easily assembled. A lighting fixture such as a chandelier is fastened to nipple 32 by a suitable rod, a hook and chains, or other arrange-- ment, and the lamp sockets of the lighting fixture are permanently wired to the plug contacts. In the present instance, a. chan-' delier is indicated by pipe 40. To attach the hanging portion of the fixture to the wall portion, the combined plug and sup ort is held at an angle to face plate 10 and lilgs 29 are inserted into openings 16. The plug is then pushed or swung toward the face plate, lugs 29 pivoting on the edges of openings 16. During this movement contact blades 21 swing throughthe extension 18 of openings 13 and into engagement with contacts 14. As the surface of the plug moves into engagement with face plate 10,

To disconnect it, it is only necessary to release catch 30 by means of end 30* and pull down on the catch end of casing 27.

Since U-shaped yoke 33 is pivoted to casing 27,'the casing may be turned at an angle to the yoke so that in connecting and'disconnecting the lighting fixture the fixture as a whole need not be held at an angle to the face plate but only casing 27 and the plug. This enables the connection or disconnection to be made with the lighting fixture vertical, which makes it much easier to do.

In carrying out my invention, I may utilize any suitable number of lugs 29 and any suitable number of catches 30, the essential thing being that the mechanical connection be strong enough to support the weight of the suspended fixture. In any event, there is 110 strain on the electrical connections.

It is'to be noted, furthermore, that by my invention. I modify existing structures but little. In the case of the wall portion of only necessary to provide and extensions of the recptacle openings.

'In accordance with the provisions of the patent statptes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and the invention may be carried out by other means.

What I claim as. new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is z 1. In a wiring fixture, the combination with a face plate, and a plug receptacle associated therewith, said face plate being provided with spaced openings and said receptacle being provided with' contacts, of a combined plug and supporting member comprising a mctal casin a mounting block fixed 1n the casing, b ade contacts carried by said block, alugand a latch carried by the casing, said lug and latch being adapted to engage the face plate through said face plate openings, and a, pivoted member connected to the casing and adapted to support a lighting fixture.

2. In a' wiring fixture, the combination with a face plate, associated therewith, said face plate being openings and said'receptacle with elongated openings with contacts in line therewith, of a combined plug and supporting member comprising a metal casing, a mounting block fixed in the casing, blade contacts carried-by said block, a lug and a latch carried bythe casing, said lug being adapted to be inserted at an angle into one of said face plate openings and the member then turned on the wall formin an edge of the opening as a pivot to bring the latch into engagement with the face plate through another of said face plate openings and the blade contacts into engagement with the receptacle contacts, a pair of cars projecting from'said' casing, and a lighting fixture pivoted to saidears.
