UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
WILFRED IB. GODDARD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS FORNIA.
- Application filed Kay 4,
The present invention relates to electric fixtures of the type involvin a side wall electric light bracket to whic is comb1ned a concealed electric lug connection.
It is one of the ob ects of the present 1I l. vention to provide a novel combined electric light bracket and electric (plug connection to which latter maybe rea' ily attached an electric extension cord for conducting electric current to various electrical apparatus.
It is one of the important objects of the present invention to provide means that w1ll eliminate the usual and ordinary form of floor and wall socket connection provided to receive the plu of an electric extension cord, and to WhlCh means the servlce w1res of an electric installation can be connected as an outlet, such for instance, as a side wall electric light-fixture which latter, therefore, has the dual purpose of serving as a bracket or support for one'or more electric llghts, and at the same time provides for the convenient attachment of a plug of an electric extension cord.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a combined fixture bracket and plug attachment outlet not only providing for increased convenience, but also affording an ornamental and attractive fixture.
The invention possesses other ob'ects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be mademanifest in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment shown by'the said drawin and description as variations may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a bracket fixture having a concealed, outlet connection.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, central section through the-bracket back showing the cover of the outlet connection in removed position from the connection to permit access thereto.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the dismounted outlet connection.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified form of cover member.

forms of portable electric apparatus, such for instance as portable electric lights, portable cooking utensils, portable cleanin apparatus, portable medical devices, an innumerable others. are adapted to be attached to a service installation through the medium of an extension cord 2 in Fig. 2, and which has a suitable form of plug 3 adapted to be inserted into a complimentary socket or service outlet connection. These sockets or outlet connections are mounted in the floor or in base-boards or in the wall for convenient attachment of the extension plu 3, and generally are cons icuous and dis guring potfine interior finis and serve only as out- The present invention consists in providing an ornamental electric lighting fixture preferably in the shape of a wall bracket, provided with outlet facilities for the reception of a plug, independent of the lamp sockets, so that the extension connection may be made Without removing a lamp.
The invention, in its illustrated form, is embodied in a bracket fixture having a plate These various devices or back 5 of any suitable structural contour and ornamental design and is shown as provided with apertures to receive fastening screws 6 by which it may be secured to a wall, panel or other surface. A bracket may be provided with one or more tubular arms 4 to carry sockets for electric lamps in the usual or any suitable manner. The back 5 is hollowed and forms a casing or shell providing a chamber in which there may be arranged any suitable type of outlet connection as 7, mounted in any desired manner u n the back 5 and shown as being attache to a back bar 8 screwed or otherwise securedto the rear face. of the back 5 so as to be concealed and carried thereb The front face of the back 5 is provide with an opening 9, behind which the outlet connection 7 is dis osed, the outer plug receiving end of WhlCh is exposed through the mouth or opening; This opening 9 and the end of the attachment 7 may be covered by any suitable ornamental means removable to provide access to the outlet for the insertion of the plug 3 into the electric contacts in the outletv and shown.
abl attached to the back 5, as for instance by eing ivotally suspended from an eye 11.
Insteacf of being attached to the back 5, the outlet concealing plate may be entirely removable. A removable form of'cover is shown in Fig. 4, as provided with a block of insulating material. 12, or with non-conducting pins 13, which when inserted in the apertures of the outlet connection 7 will provide a means for attaching the removable cover- 10 over the mouth 9 without closing the cir cuit. Various other fastening devices mi ht be utilized in lieu .of forms here descri d From the above it will be seen that I have provided an ornate and combined outlet fixture useful for a plurality of services without requiring the provision of a special outlet for a plug attachment or connection, and, also, which enables use of an electric light or bracket fixture for convenient access without requiring the removal of an electric lamp as is the common practice. The cover 10 is referably made ornate to harmonize with t e. general design ofthe bracket and when in place, not only conceals the outlet connection, but also conceals the presence of the outlet connection.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character describe usages com rising a wall (platehavin an ornamental ront face an a forwar 1y extending chambered portion provided with an aperture, tubular arms carrying lightin fixtures secured to the u per portion of t e chambered portion an opening thereinto, an electric outlet fixture arranged behlnd said aperture and adapted to receive a plug inserted into said apertureand a closure having an ornamental face attached to the plate above the aperture and concealing said aperzure when the plug is not in the outlet fix= ure.
2. A lighting fixture comprising a Wall plate having an ornamental front face and a forwardly extending chambered portion provided with an aperture, a flange struck up from said wall plate and surrounding said aperture, a lug on said wall plate adjacent said flange, arms carrying lamp sockets secured to the wall plate at the chambered portion, an electric outlet fixture arrandged behind said aperture and flush with sai flange, and a closure pivoted to said lug and adapted in closed position to overlie said outlet fixture and said flange.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WILFRED B. GODDARD.
