Description
l. WURLEY.
Machine for Applying Paste to Wall-Paper.
Patented March 2, 1875.
I v Z A I INVENTORZ d%u [ff WITNESSES 2 9 M "/MY UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JOHN WORLEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR APPLYING PASTE TO WALL-PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,375, dated March 2, 1875; application filed December 30, 1874. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WORLEY, of the city of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Machine for Applying Paste to Wall-Paper, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to furnish a convenient means for expeditiously applying paste to wall-paper preparatory to hanging it on the wall. It consists of a box of tin or other suitable material, divided into two compartments, in one of which the roll of wallpaper lies, while the other contains the paste and a roller partially immersed therein, over which the paper passes as it is drawn out of the box, a straight edge of the front wall of the box which serves as a scraper to remove superfluous paste from the paper, and an adj ustable lid with a projecting and rounded front edge, which can be adjusted to press the paper down upon the scraping edge of the box, with more or less force, asmay be de sired.
1n the annexed drawings, Fig. l is an end view of the box with the lid closed down, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.
A is the outer wall of the box; B, an inclined partition dividing said box into two compartments, G and D. E is a roll of wallpaper lying in compartment 0, and F is a roller suspended in compartment D, which is to be partially filled with paste. The upper edge of the front wall of the box is made perfectly straight and smooth, and is slightly depressed below the end walls, as shown at a, Fig. 2. G is the lid of the box, made adjustable by means of a latch, g, provided with a series of holes, any one of which will engage with a catch-pin projecting from the end of the box. A similar device is provided at each side of the box. Set-screws or other equiva lent devices, may be employed in lieu of the edge of the front wall of the box, which evenly distributes and spreads the paste, and scrapes ofi any superfluous quantity thereof, and thence under the projecting rounded edge of the lid at g. It will be seen that in using this machine the strip of paper does not have to be inserted between rollers, (which is a troublesome process,) but the roll of paper is simply laid in the compartment 0, the end of the strip then drawn out over the roller F and the front side of the box, and the lid closed down and properly adjusted, when the operator has nothing to do but to draw out the strip E, which, in passing over the roller E, will rotate the same, and receive a coating of paste therefrom.
WVhat I claim as my invention is The combination of the box A, the partition B, the scraping-edge of the front wall of the box, and the adjustable lid with the latch g and the projecting rounded front, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as described.
JOHN WORLEY. Witnesses:
JOHN Goon, H. GooN.
