UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
RALVH E. BURTON, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBA, ASSIGNOR T0 JOHN XV. "WEEKS, SECRETARY OF WAR OF THE UNTTED STATES 0F AMERICA, TRUSTEE.
GOVERNOR.
Application filed May 6, 19242. Serial No. 559,100.
(GRANTED 'UNDER THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1883; 22 STAT. I.. 625.)
The invention described herein may be used by Vthe Government, or .any of its oiiicers or employees in prosecution of work 'for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to governors, and more particularly to a form especially adopted 'for use in combination with a well known :torm of magneto, whereby the spark, for instance, in the combustion chamber oi' an internal combustion engine, may be. discontinued when the speed of rotation has reached a predetermined rate. j p
The objects are to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device that may be applied to a magneto by simply adding the t'ew parts required, and only slightly changing one of the parts of the magneto as originally placed on the market. f
A Ifurther object is to provide la device of a character that may be sold as an attachment for a magneto and may be applied by one that is not necessarily an expert me* chanic.
A further, object being to break the high tension current just prior to its discharge from ythe distributorat the end of the vmagneto by opening a gapl between the end of the high tension pencil and the contact plate in the rotor of the distributor, when the motor to which the vmagneto is attached, has passed a predetermined R. P. M.; said structure also providing for the automatic reestablishment of the current through lthe parts when the engine has resumed its predetermined maximum R. P. M.
For purposes of illustration, one form of this device is shown, it being understood that minor detail changes in construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Similar numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the ligure-s of the drawings in which: p
Fig. l is a vertical section of my improved governor, showing adjoining fragmentary parts of a well known magneto, as at present placed on the market.
Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective View of the governor body, or spider.
,Fig 3 is a similar view of the governor slide sleeve.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the distributor rotor.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the governor arms, links, ily balls and springs, assembled.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the magneto pencil.
Reference now being had to the drawings by numerals, l indicates a well known Jform of magneto, 2 the high tension brush holder, 3 indicates one member ot the safety spark gap, connected by tleXible arm 4, with the brush holder 2.
The usual distributor rotor magneto gear 5, and its driving pinion 6, are shown in Fig. l. Ordinarily the distributor block 7, with its insulating ring 8,V is mounted directly on the magneto 1, and the distributor .rotor 9 is mounted directly on the gear 5.
When this improved governor is applied, the above named parts are in no way altered as to their structure, but are simply detached from the parts mentioned and a governor housing, or tubular extension l0, is inserted between the magneto casing 1 and its dis,-
tributor block 7, and a governor body or spider ll, is inserted between the gear 5 and the distributor rotor .9. All mounting and securing means corresponding, and are interchangeable.
To mount what is known as the high tension pencil in the form of magneto shown, it has always been necessary to insert the outer point of the pencil into the distributor rotor and telescope a sleeve against the tension ot a spring at the other end o'll the pencil in order to adjust the biiurcatedinner end of the pencil on the high tension brush holder 2.
Said pencil 12 is in no way altered as to structure, but is simply lengthened to reach its seat in the rotor 9 in its adjusted or outer position. By reference to F ig. l, it will be seen that the pencil is provided with the reduced inner end 13, adopted to form an abutment for one end o1c a coil spring lll, located in a telescoping sleeve l5, said sleeve being provided with the usual biturcated end 1G,
`adopted in its usual way to straddle the shank or terminal of the high tension brush holder.
The pencil may be of insulating material and conductor 17 may extend through same and come into contact with the distributor Contact plate 18, which, in turn, transfers lOl) the electrical energy to the distributor contact brushes i9, and trom these out through cables (not shown) secured by the terminal nuts all in the usual manner.
By reference to Figs. l and :2, the governor body or spider ll, consists of end plates 2O and 2l, connected by parallel members 22. rl`he plates 20 and 2l are provided with central openings through which the pencil entends. Plate 2O is provided with ears 2a, between which governor armsv ll, are pivotally mounted on pins 25, said plate 2O being' lperimtne-ntly secured by screws 26 to the gear 5 ot the magneto.
'.lo' the outer plate 2l, is secured by screws 2i', the magneto rotor 9.
A governor slide sleeve 2S is mounted for longitudinal movement on the axis of rotation in a central chamber 29, in the rotor. Said sleeve 28 being provided with ears 30, between which one end oi the governor arm links 3l are mounted on pins 32. The opposite ends ot' links 3l are mounted on pins 33, in ears 34 mounted on or forming an integral part of the governor arms.
Any preferred 'form of tension springs 35 may be mounted on the governor arms such as shown, and maybe secured at their ends in apertured projecting ends ot. bearing pins 33, and tend to retract the governor arms.
F ly balls 36 are shown adjustablyv mounted on screw threaded extensions 37', of the governor arms.l and may be secured in their adjusted positions on said arms by lock nuts 38. y
By adjusting the fly balls V36 away from the aXis ot rotation of the governor, the i'naximum or operating R. P. M. will be reduced. y y
The high tension pencil l2 is provided with shoulder 39, immediately adjacent to the inner end of the sleeve 28, against which the sleeve comes into contactV when the governor operates.
In the use of this device, a positive check is obtained against racing the engine, the ily balls are adjusted and locked in the position to operate at a maximum predetermined R. P. lift. lVhen said speedis reached, the ily balls are thrown out against the tension of springs 35, arms 4:0 swing out, carrying with them the inner ends ot' links 3l, the outer ends being secured to sleeve 28 will cause same to be partially withdrawn' trom the chamber 29 in the rotor, causing said sleeve to come into contact with shoulder 39 ot the pencil and move same back against the tension of compression spring 14E, withdrawing the outer end il of pencil l2 out ot engagement'v with the distributor plate 18, thereby interrupting the transfer of current through the several terminals, and the ignition spark will be discontinuedin the' V,several cylinders'until the speed of the go'vernoris again reduced to its maximumv operating speedv7 at which time spring 35 will retract governor arms ILO, which will in turn slide sleeve 28 bacl; to its normal position and permit the high tension pencil under the pre:- sure ot spring la to return to its normal position and reestablish the electrical connection between the magneto and the distributor plate.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by `-ietters Patent i-s:
