LIBERTY J. SEELY, OF WALDRON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,355, dated March 2, 1875; application filed January 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LIBERTY J. SEELY, of Waldron, Shelby county, Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a top View of my improved draft-equalizer for plows and other implements. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same; Fig. 4, a detail transverse section of the same on the line a c, Fig. 3, showing braced cross-bar, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the plow-beam with front View of clevis.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efi'ective draft-equalizer for three horses, to be attached to plows and other agri cultural implements, by which the land-side is relieved of twisting and drawn in a straightforward direction, gaging at the same time the depth and width of furrow to the draft. The invention consists of a slotted clevis, secured by supporting braces and bars at the front end of the plow-beam, at suitable distance toward the land-side of the same. The clevis carries in a sliding and adjustable drafteye a draft-rod with the usual three-horse doubletree, being strengthened by draft and stay rods attached to a lateral crossbar and the rear and front part of the plow-beam.
A represents the plow-beam, to the front end of which is firmly and securely bolted the slotted clevisplate B, being set, by means of supporting-bars a and top braces b, the required distance from the beam toward the land-side. The adjustable draft-eye 0 slides in the slotted clevis, and is clamped to any position thereon by the draft-nuts d, according to the depth and width of furrow required. The draft-rod 6 passes through the draft-eye O, and is adjusted therein, carrying at its front end the customary three-horse double-tree, being connected at its rear end by clevis and bolt to a rigid cross-bar, D, that is firmly bolted to the side of the plow-beam and stiffened by braces f. An additional stiffening-bar, g, runs from the clevis-supporting frame, along the under side of the plow-beam, to the cross-bar and plow-standard. A rear draft-rod, e, connects the end of the cross-bar with the rear end of the plow-beam at the handles, while a stayrod, h, is clevised to the opposite end of the crossbar at the same distance from the plowbeam as the draft-rods, and bolted rigidly to the front end of the plow-beam.
The draft of the three horses pulling abreast is equalized in such a manner that the twist ing and irregular running of the plow is avoided and a straight and steady running of the same is provided, while at the same time the width of the furrow is exactly gaged and regulated.
The construction is simple, yet strong, and prevents, by the equalization of the draft on the plow-beam, the breaking or other injury of the plowshare, while giving greater satisfaction than the more complicated equalizingattachments.
Having thus described my invcntion, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved draft-equalizer for plows, &c., composedof a slotted and rigidly supported and braced clevis, B, at the front end and land-side of the plow-beam, with adjustable draft-eye O, in combination with the strengthening draft and stay rods 0 e h, clevised to laterally-braced cross-bar D and bolted to front and rear ends of beam, substantially as specified.
LIBERTY J. SEELY.
