STREET AND DISPLAY SIGN HOLDER.
Application 'filed January 22, 1925. Serial No. 4,002.
This invention relates as indicated to street and display sign holders and refers more particularly to a new and improved sign holder construction adapted for use on street corners or highways to support signs bear-,
, ing the names of the intersecting streets.
The object of the invention .is to provide a sign holder which is simple and inexpensive in construction and one in'which the signs are rigidly but removably supported. A further object hereof is to provide a sign holder which may be readily attached or mounted upon an ordinary lighting or telephone pole, provision beingmade for suitable attachment whether such pole be made of wood or iron.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, con-, sists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of our invention showing an improved construction for holding a pair of street signs arranged at right angles to each other. i
vention contemplates the provision of a street sign supporting member WhlOh may.
be mounted in various ways depending upon the conditions at the mounting place. In accordance with the invention, this member consists of an elongated section of pipe indicated'at 10 in the drawing, having means for detachably supporting onepr more street signs. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7, the pipe sides and a single one mounted in one of the supporting members 10 or they may have indicia on only one side thereof in which case two of them are placed back to back and then mounted in the slot 12 of the memher 10. It has been found thatthe present construction is quite inexpensive in manufacture and assembly and one which is very durable 'in 'use.
Means as bolts 15 are passed transversely through the member 10 at one or more places and serve to draw the edges of the slot firmly against thesurfaces of the sign, thus rigidly locking the same vinthe supporting member as well as providing means which facilitate the changing of the signs. Suitable holes are provided in the upper edges 13 of the signs for the reception of bolts 15. I The outer end of the signsupporting member 10 may be closed by an ornamental knob 16 or the like having a threaded portion 17 received internally of the pipe. The other end 18 of each pipe section 10 is screw threaded to aid in the mounting thereof as will now be described. Y
In Fig. 1 is shown a form of mounting device for use on street corners where there are no convenient lighting or telephone poles which might be utilized for supporting the members 10. I Such device consists of a vertical standard 20 carrying at its upper end 1 a head or cap member 21, the latter being secured to the standard by screws 22 or the like. This head member is formed with two or more laterally projecting bosses 23 having, screw threaded apertures 24 therein in which may be screwed the ends 18 of the pipe sections. The bosses 23 are arranged at right angles to each other so as to position the signs for proper reading at a street intersectio 1 Fig. 2 illustrates the manner of mounting the-present novel sign holder on the side of a metallic lighting or telephone pole, ll: be-
lon-
ing only necessary to bore and tap therein 1 an aperture 25 and then screw 11! the pipe section 10. When it isdeslred .tomount the sign holder on a wooden post, the threaded end 18 is screwed into a socket 26 of a flanged member 27 which is attached to the post 29 by wood screws 28 as seen in Fig; 7.
The street sign illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 is of the type that has the name of the main street in bold type and the name of the intersecting street in smaller type. The
sign holder of these figures differs from the one hereinbefore described in that the pipe section 10 is provided with two slots 30 and 31 aligned transversely thereof. The sign 32 is inserted in both of these slots so that the street names will be positioned one on each side of the pipe section. Similar securing means asbolts 33 are employed to fix the sign in place.
It will be-seen from the foregoing description that we have'accomplished the objects primarily stated and that we have provided a newand improved sign holder which is extremely simple and cheap in construction and one which may be adapted for use under varying conditions. The present sign hold-- er in the form of the pipe section has been found to rigidly hold thestreet sign in place and on account of the securing bolts 15, the side edges of the slot are tightly gripped against the sign and prevent the samefrom rattling or becoming loose.
Other modes of. applying the (principle of our invention may e emgloye instead of the one explained, change eing made as reards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of-the follow- Leo s11 ing claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
We therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention l. The combination with a sign supporting member comprising a section of hollow metal pipe having an elongated slot in one sidethereof; of a sign having its upper edge received in said slot; and bolts passing through said pipe and saidsign, said bolts being adapted to force the edges of said slot against the sign.
2. The combination with a sign support ing member comprising a section of hollow metal pipe having longitudinally aligned slots in two sides thereof; of a sign received in said slots, said sign projecting beyond both sides of said pipe; and bolts passing throu h said pipe and said sign.
3. ign post construction comprising a vertical standard; a removable head mounted .on the upper end thereof; laterally projecting bosses provided on said head in angular relation, said bosses being formed with screw threaded apertures and sections of pipe threaded in said apertures, each said section having an elongated slot in the under side thereof and having a sign removably "secured in said sl'ot.
