IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE PAINTERS EASELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 160,324, dated March 2, 1875; application filed December 23,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HOGUE, of Butland, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Pain ters Easels and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved easel. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper portion of the same, with the parts in a different relative position. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line x m, Fig. .1. Fig. 4. is a vertical cross-section of the upper portion of the same, taken through the line 52 y, Fig. 1.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved carriage-painters easel, which shall be simple in construction, and adjustable so as to enable a painter to adjust a carriage-body or other object, while being painted, in any desired position for convenience in painting, or for the utilization of light coming from a fixed source; and it con-- sists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
P is an upright post, about three by five inches in size and about thirty inches high, which is supported in an H-shaped frame, F, which is made to occupy a space about six by six feet in extent and which rests upon casters 0. 1
T is an adjustable platform, which I prefer to make about two feet square, hinged to the upper end of the post P by means of lugs L L and a pin or bolt, B, the latter passing through holes in the lugs L L, and througha hole in the post P near its top, in such a manner that the resulting hinge admits of an inclination of the adjustable platform T to either side from the horizontal through an arc of ninety degrees, which action is better shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. In using my improved easel, the bottom or floor of the carriage-body is first perforated with a hole to receive the rod It. It is then placed upon the turn-table T, and, by means of the thread and nut a, is drawn down firmly upon the brads b.' Thus secured, it is evident that with the universal movement, dependent on the adjustable platform T, the turn-table T, and the casters 0, it may be brought into any desired position for convenience in painting, or for the utilization of light coming from a fixed source.
The adjustable platform T and the turntable-T may be round instead of square, and the rod B may be removed at pleasure, and longer or shorter one substituted as the service may require; and, for heavy work, the adjustable platform T may be elongated and two posts used instead of the single post P.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the adjustable platform T, provided with a semicircular ratchetbar, 0, with the upright post P and the turn-table T, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
