BELT BUCKLE.

This application is a division of an appli cation filed by me April 24, 1925, Serial No. 25,622.

This invention relates to belt buckles for personal wear and has for its object the pro-- vision of a construction which will facilitate the assembling of the gripper and the lever or bail which is engaged with the at tach-ing end of the belt, will eitectually retain the parts in assembled relation, and will securely hold the belt to which the buckle is applied. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and is hereinafter fully described, and it consists in certain novel features particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The front plate 1 is of the usual or any preferred form having side flanges 2 provided with suitable openings to receive the ends of the pintle or pivot pin which are upset against the outer sides of the flanges.

The gripper 16 is an integral structure stamped from a single blank of sheet metal having

parallel side walls

21 and 22, constituting clamping jaws to grip the belt against the rear face of the front plate 1, and a top 20 connecting the side walls. End portions of the top are separated by transverse slits trom the main portion of the top and are rolled to form sleeves or hubs 17 encircling the ends 18 of the pintle. The intermediate portion 19 of the pintle is offset or depressed to accommodate the bail lever 23 and bring the axis of the pintle close to the top member 20 so that the latter may come within the plane of the edges of the side flanges 2. Alined slots or openings are formed through the side walls to receive the ends and side members of the bail lever, and the sides of the lever are swaged near their ends to provide the fins 24, after the side members have been inserted through the openings in the side walls. The extremities of the bail lever are upset against the side wall 21, the upset ends and the fins effectually preventing withdrawal of the lever while the offset of the pintle permits its ends to be set immediately adjacent the top of the gripper. It will be noted that the pintle is set closer to the wall 21 so that the wall 22 will be caused to more tightly grip the engaged end of the belt in the event that said end should tend to slide through the buckle in a direction away from the bail and the attached belt end.

In Figures 4, 5 and 6, there is shown the same bail lever 23 as in Figures 1, 2, 3, but the gripper has end walls 6 bridging the space between the side walls 8 and Sand reen'forcing the ends of the side walls, said end walls having openings therethrough close to the top 10. The pintle 25 has its greater portion disposed in the same plane with the same plane with the sides of the bail, just as in the arrangement shown in Figure 3, but is provided adjacent its ends with offsets, kinks or bends 26 to pass around the sides of the bail.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. In a belt buckle, the combination of a front plate, a pintle carried on the rear of the front plate, a gripper having sides and a top connecting the sides mounted eccentrically on the pintle, and a lever bail having side members, the ends of which are engaged through the sides of the gripper to clear the bail.

2. In a belt buckle, the combination of a front plate, a pintle carried on the rear of the front plate, a gripper mounted eccentrically on the pintle, and a lever bail engaged transversely through the gripper be tween the top of the same and the pintle, the pintle being ollset between its ends to clear the lever bail.
