H. F. EVER-ETT HANDLE FORv IMPLEMENTS Filed April 8. 1925 Patented Oct. 12, 1926.-
PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. EVEEETT, F WEST BOXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANDLE FOR IMPLEMENTS.
Application tiled April 8, 1925. Serial No. 21,560.
This invention relates to handles of im. plements such as fencing-foils wherein a handle member proper is equipped with a pommel at its outer end and with a guard member at its inner end where the foil enters thereinto. The handle construction of the present invention is of the same general type as that shown in the patent to Everett, No. 849,832, patented January 8, 1907, and the present invention is in the nature of an improvement on the type of foil handle there described. The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction and mounting of the guard member at the inner end of the handle whereby this guard member is strongly and reliably assembled with the handle and is cheaper and more convenient to manufacture than prior types.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a fencing-foil handle embodying the invention, a portion of a fencing-foil being shown in elevation therein.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one form of guard member.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing another lshank 12fL extends through a passage of the hand grip member and a shoulder 12b where this shank merges into the body of the foil and is adapted to engage a guard fitted to the other or inner end 'of the handgrip member. This guard comprises, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an inner layer in one with said plate.
13 of leather such as sole-leather or the like, and an outer reinforcing late 14 of metal. For mounting this guar upon the inner end of the hand-grip member 10 a socket 15 is provided, this being shown as of 55 stamped metal, rectangular in cross section to fit a corresponding shape of the end of the hand-grip. In accordance with my invention, this socket member 15 which fits upon the end of the hand-grip member is eo provided with oppositely extending lugs or ears 16 which extend outward at opposite sides between the plate 14 and the leather layer 13. The parts are securely and strongly assembled by fastening means such as rivets 17 which are passed through the plate 14, the ears 16 and the leather layer 13, and as shown upset against the inner layer 13. This provides an exceptionally strong and reliable mounting of the guard, and permits the reinforcing plate 14 to be produced as a plain stamping without any attention to drawing a socket thereonas would be the case were the socket 15 formed In Figs. 3 and 4, I show a form of the invention where the guard is of part spherical form. In this case the inner guard member 13 may be of relatively light leather or the like, and as shown, of relatively small di- S0 mension, the full dimension of the guard being produced by the outer metallic shell member 14. In this form the socket 15 with its opposite ears 16 is the same as already I described, these ears extending between the members 13 and 14 with the rivets 17 passed therethrough and upset at the inner side as already described. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other speciic forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to .the appended claim rather than to the fore- Patent is In combination with the handle of a fencing-foil, a concave-convex metallic guard fitting around said handle, having substantially smooth inner and outer surfaces, and
a metallic socket member, also tting around the handle, provided with outwardly extending ears lying adjacent the inner sur- `face of said guard, and nfastening means rigidly xing the ears to said guard, whereby that portion of the guard adjacent the hanl!" dle is reinforced against bending stresses.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
HENRY F. EVERETT.
