UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER C. MGMAINS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONNECTIONS FOR BED-BOTTOM SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,274, dated March 2, 1875; app'licaion filed January 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Beitknownthat I,ALEXANDERC.MGMAINS, of San Francisco, county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improved Device for Uniting or Con nectin g Spiral Springs in the Manufacture of Mattresses, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following specification and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
This invention consists in connecting spiral springs at their bases and tops by means of a four-armed bent-wire clamp, which unites the springs in groups of four, and by which an equal and even adjustment of the surface is bad when pressureis brought to bear upon the mattress.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan of my device, showing its application to a group of four spiral springs, and any number may be connected in the same manner to make the size of mattress desired. Fig. 2 is a side view of the clamp.
A represents a double clamp, which I prefer to make of wire, which is bent double, or with parallel strands, so as to form four arms, B. This clamp is placed so as to fill the hollow square formed by the four spiral springs, both at the base and at the top, and the four arms of the upper clamp are bent down around the top wire of the spirals of each of the four springs, while the ends of the arms of the lower clamp are bent upward and over the bottom spiral. Thus any number of springs may be connected and bound together, forming a uniform surface of great strength, and no part or portion of the mattress or any of the spirals can be moved independent of the others.
Having thus described my invention, it should here be observed that I am aware that it has been proposed to unite spiral springs by four independent clamps clasped around the four spirals above and below, or at the top and base, at right angles. This does not prevent the springs from being raised up and separated to a certain extent when pressure is brought to bear upon the surface, for the reason that there is no center support in the hollow square formed by joining the spirals; and this device forms no part of my invention; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the double four-armed clamps A B with the spiral springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
