Description
Oct. 12 1926.
1,602,558 w. H. STEVENS ToL HANDLE Filed o'ct. '18, 1922 l Patented Gct. 12, A1926.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HATTON STEVENS, OF HOLLIDAYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Toor. HANDLE.
Application filed October 18, 1922.
The handle of my invention is adapted Jfor shovels, spades, forks and the like, and it is esigned to provide an improved construction at reduced cost.
The handle is characterized, in its preferred form, by the combination of a wood stem with a D-top or hand piece having its base, clevis and grip formed of an integral homogeneous block of hardened plastic vegetable material molded around the handhole and containing a socket for the stein or shai't.
A preferred form of my D-handle is set out in the following description and the accompanying illustration thereof.
In the illustrations, Fig. 1 is an elevation representing both the front and back view t the top of a handle embodying a preferred 'form of my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2*-2X of Fig.
and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the The handle illustrated comprises the wood stem or sha'lt 1 having the reduced. top 2 to provide a species of tenon for enagement in the D-hand piece 3 to be fixed to the stem or shaft.
Serial No. 595,442.
and the part 2 is set in this bushing, the bottom of the part 3 and of the part 4i abutting against the shoulder 5 ot' the stem. A bolt 35 or rivet 6 passes through the parts 2, 3 and l transversely to the parts 2 and I and parallel to the front and back of the part 3.
n The part 3 can be made of various fibrous materials mixed with various binders, as 40 help pulp, sawdust or ground leather mixed with casein or plaster bakelite, suitably in equal parts thoroughly mixed, molded and the molded form baked.
This handle is strong, durable and ineX- pensive, avoiding the waste involved in allwood D-handles.
In this 'form o'l' my invention, which differs speciiically from that of my patent No. 1,565,599, the handle can be produced at lower cost with some sacrifice in the strength which characterizes the handle of such patent, but with the provision of a handle that is generally satisfactory.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A tool handle comprising a D-hand piece having its base, clevis and grip formed of an integral homogeneous block of hardened plastic vegetable material molded around a handhole and containing a socket for a shaft.
Signed at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, this 16th day of October, 1922.
WILLIAM HATTON STEVENS.
