DISINFECTANT DEVICE .FOR FLUSH TANKS.
Application am March 8', 192a Serial No. 93,037.
This invention relates to improvements in disinfecting devices for flush tanks.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which may be readily applied to a flush tank and which has advantages over such devices constructed heretotore'as regards simplicity of construction and manner of operation, and which may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
Other objects and advantages will herein after appear.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, an embodiment thereof is shown in the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a centraldvertical sectlonal view taken through the device, and showing the manner in which the same is applied to a flush tank;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional View, showing the operating parts of the device in a different position than that shown in Fig. 1; and i Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
A cylindrical container 1 provided intermediate its ends with a partition 2 secured thereto in any suitable manner such as by soldering and provided with a central opening or aperture 3 is sus ended from the upper edge of the usual ush tank 4. of a toilet by means of a U-shaped bracket 5 secured in any suitable manner to the container, as shown. The portion of the container above partition 2 provides a chamber 6 for holding a liquid disinfectant and is closed at the top by means of a suitable screw cap 7 which is removed to replenish the supply of disinfectant in chamber 6. A boss 8 provided with a central threaded opening registering with opening Sis secured to the under side of partition 2 in any suitable manner such as by soldering, a vertically arranged member 9 having itsupper end threaded into boss 8, as showinand being provided at this end with a valveseat- 10 and at its lower end with a valve seat 11, and being further provided with a longitudinally extending opening 12. A rod or bolt 13 extends loosely through opening 12 and is provided at its upper end with a head or valve 14 adapted upon downward movement to seat upon valve seat 10 to shut off communication between the interior of chamber 6 and the exterior of the same. A second same against its seat 11.
the interior of chamber (Sand theexterior of the same, valve 15 being adjusted so that the same is spaced from valve 14 a distance greater than the distance between valve seats 10 and 11. A suitable float 16 is also threaded on the lower extended end of bolt 13 and engages the under side of valve 15, as shown, to lock the same in adjusted position on the bolt. y
The lower portion of container 1 which extends below partition 2 provides a protective apron 17 which surrounds the valve unit ust described, this apron being provided with an vents 18 arranged so that the same are some distance abovethe normal level of water in tank 4, as shown. A cap or plate 19' provided with openings 20 for permitting entrance and egress of water to and from the lower end of container 1 below partition 2, is fitted overthe lower end of the container and secured thereto in any suitable manner such as by soldering, cap 19 and the apron 17 completely enclosing and protecting the valve unit and operating float associated therewith from unauthorized handling and from damage due to'knocking of the valve unit parts and float against anything. I V
The arrangement of the parts is such that upon rising of the water level in flush tank 4, float 16 will cause. upward movement of the bolt or rod 1 1 and seating of valve 15 against the lower valve seat 11 before the water level reaches itsnormal point as indicated in Fig. 1, so that when the level of the water rises further to its normal point float 16 will be completely submerged and thus caused to exert an appreciable upward push or thrust upon valve 15 to hold the The operation of the device is as follows: Upon discharge of the waterin flush tank 4 in the usual manner, whereby valve 15 is moved away from its seat 11, the liquid disinfectant in chamber 6 will be permitted to flow therefrom by way of openings 3 and 12 into the flushing water in tank 4, this discharge of the disinfectant from chamber 6 continuing until the level of water in tank 4 and float 16 drop further to cause seating of valve 1 1 on the upper valve seat 10 whereby the outlet from chamber 6 is closed. From the foregoing it will be seen that upon dis charge of the flushing water from tank a, a measured charge of the liquid disinfectant is discharged into this water and passes with the same into the usual bowl below. Upon rising of the water level in tank 1 after the flushing operation float 16 is carried upward to effect upward movement of valve 14: away from its seat 10, at which time the liquid disinfectant will again be permitted to flow from chamber 6 into the lower end of container 1 and into the tank 4 by way of openings 3, 12 and 20. Upon further rising of the flushing water in tank a and consequent further upward movement of float 16, valve 15 will be caused to seat against the lower valve seat 11 to close the outlet from chamher 6 and prevent further discharge of the liquid disinfectant therefrom. As explained above, the arrangement is such that the level of the flushing water in tank 4 will continue to rise to its normal point after the closing of valve 15, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby float 16 will then be completely submerged to cause the same to exert an appreciable upward force or thrust upon valve 15 to hold the same securely against its seat 11. In this connection it is to be noted that by reason of the openings 20 in the cap or plate 19, the water level in the lower end of container 1 is the same as the level of the water in tank 1.
The charge of disinfectant permitted to flow from chamber 6 for each stroke of the rod or bolt 13 may be varied by adjusting valve 15 axially along the latter.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a disinfecting device for flush tanks has been provided which is simple in construction and manner of operation, which has few parts, and which may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
A preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, but of course various changes may be adopted in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a disinfectant-containing chamber and a second chamber therebelow, valve means for providing communication between the said chambers, and a float arranged in said second chamber and connected to said valve means for effecting operative movement thereof upon change of the water level in said second chamber, said second chamber being provided with openings above and below" the normal water level therein and providing con'm'uinication at all times between the interior and exterior of said second chamber at said points.
2. A device of the character described comprising a disinfectant container, a vertically arranged member supported by said container and provided at its upper and lower ends with valve seats and with a lon gitudinally extending opening terminating at its respective ends at said valve seats and providing communication between the interior of said container and the exterior of the same, a bolt extending loosely through said opening and downwardly beyond the lower end of said member and being provided at its upper end with a head adapted upon downward movement of said bolt to seat upon the upper valve seat to shut oll' communication between the interior of said container and the exterior of the same, a second vali e threaded on said bolt for axial adjustment with respect thereto and adapted upon upward movement to seat upon the lower valve seat to shut oif communication between the ii'iterior of said container and the exterior of the same, said valve and head being spaced a distance greater than the distance between said valve seats, and a valveoperating floatthreaded on the lower end of said bolt and engaging the under side of said second valve to lock the same in adjusted position on said bolt.
A device of the character described comprising a container closed at each end thereof and provided intermediate the same with an apertured partition dividing said container into a lower chamber and an upper disinfectant-containing chamber, said lower chamber being provided with openings permitting the entrance and egress of water to and from the same, valve means supported and arranged in said lower chamber and adapted to control the discharge of the disinfectant from the upper to the lower chamber by way of the aperture in said partition, and a float arranged in said lower chamber and operativcly connected to said valve means to effect movement thereof upon change of the water level'in said lower chamber.
In witness whereof 1 hereto aflix my signature.
