h iy invention relates to metal anchoring devices which are designed to be applied to cement walls, particularly in the ceilings (of horizontal walls, or floors, and such as are commonly termed inserts in the cement building; art. lhese inserts, usually formed of cast iron, are placed in the ceiling when it is poured, and are used for the attachment of hangers for shafting, machinery, motors or other electrical apparatus or fixtures, pipes, radiators, trolley tracks, or anything which it is desired to suspend from the ceiling. They may also be used for bolting timbers to the ceiling in. the con struction of partitions, or for other purposes, or a spaced pair of them may be used in connection with U-bolts formed with heads at the ends of their parallel portions, for use in storing pipe, rods, or similar articles. Various forms of such devices are ltnown in the art, and it is the object of my invention to produce an improved insert, designed to be used in connection with a standard square-headed bolt as a conueco member, and of novel and original conruction, wiich shall be better adapted for the purposes for which it is designed to bk used than previous devices lanown to me, and which because of certain novel features ot construction, hereinafter described in detail, will be part-iculai'ly strong, simple and compact in construction, afford maximum holding strength in the concrete, and afford a convenient and secure anchorage for the devices supported thereby. l fith the fore going objects and advantages in view l have del'p gned the novel insert illustrated in tie accompanying drawing and hereinafter de scribed in detail, the essential elements oi' my invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My novel insert may conveniently and economically be formed of cast metal, as cast iron, and consists of a single integral shell having; as its top portion a square top plate 1 which overhangs vertical side walls connected at the bottom to a square bottom flange 4: which projects laterally from the side walls. Gt the side walls of the insert two adjacent upper walls 55, standing at a right angle to each other, extend about half way down from the top plate toward the bottom flange, and diagonally across the insert two other adjacent upper walls, 6-6, standing at the same angle from each other, extend from the top plate to a plane a short distance above the bottom flange. Below the walls 5 5, and ofiset from them towards the center of the insert the casting is formed with lower walls 7-7 which in the present instance are somewhat rounded at their unction with each other; and below the walls 66, and similarly oti set towards the center, the casting is formed with two other lower walls 8-E, also rounded at their junction with each other. lhe outer portion of each upper side wall 5 and corresponding lower is connected with the outer porside wall tion of the upper side wall 6 and correspond ing lower side wall 8 which stand in planes at right angles to their own planes, by a ver tical side wall 9, the two opposite side walls 9 therefore being parallel with each other and being disposed diagonally with respect to the edges of the top plate 1 and the bot tom flange 4, as well as the other side walls. In the present instance, though not necessarily, the walls 9 are termed each with a transverse exterior rib 9 about midway between the top and bottom of the insert.
inasmuch as the lower side walls 7 and 8 are offset inwardly from the upper side walls 5 and 6, respectively, the width of the side walls 9 is reduced below each offset, and opposite the wall 8 the space within the insert is approximately square in cross section and ofiset slightly towards the center of the insert from the square opening between the walls 66 and the-lugs 1010.
At the interior shoulder formed by the upper and lower side walls 5 and 7 on one side of the device, the metal ofthe casting is extended continuous with the shoulder, and continuous with a pair of triangular right angled lugs 101O on the .op-
posite side walls 99 which rise abovehthe purpose of accommodating the shaftiof the 7 Diagonallyacross the insert, and below the level of the, seat for the bolt head, the ofls et arrangement of the walls Sand 8 forms inside and outside shoulders, similar to those formed by the walls 5"and 7.
The flange 4 of the insert is the present instance formed with a shallow countersunk recess extending outside the line or the side walls 7, '8 and 9, to receive a closure plug which may be inserted and, if desired, plastered over, in case the insert is installed for future use, and, it is desired to close it up until the time for its use arrives.
It will be understood that my novel insert is intended to be moulded in place in concrete or cement flooring in the usual man her, and in practice it is customary toplace the inserts in the position on the face of the form and pour the plastic cement around them. To hold them in position during this operation the bottom flange 4 of the insert is formed with notches 12 to engage brads driven into the form. r

If desired a nut as indicated in Fig; 2 and marked B', engaging the bolt and bearingthrough a washer (ordirectly) against the base of the insert may be employed to positively preventdisplacement of the bolt head from its seat, although in many cases this will be wholly unnecessary,
It will be understood that while the construction above described is believed by me to be the best form o tmy invention, it is susceptible of variation and modification, and in Fig. 6 I have illustrated a modified form of my invention, designed to be used connection with a bolt having a hexagonal head. In this casethe interior angle between the upper side walls 5 5 and 6* '6 are arranged at an angle of 120 instead of an angle of as in the case or the corresponding walls 55 and 66 of the preferred form of my invention, and the triangular lugs 1O-1O are smaller and further a'pa'rtfthan the lugs of such preferred form. The side walls 9"'9 in this form of my invention are relatively much longer than the sides 99 of the preferred forni.
In "Fig 7 I have illustrated a second modified form of my invention also adapted for use in connection with a bolt-having a hexagonal head, in which a side of the bolt head isarranged to lie against an upper intermediate side wall 15 connecting the upper side walls 5 5 and the walls (E -6 are similarly connected by an upper intermediate side wall 16. In both of these modifications, the other portions of the insert may be the same as in the preferredtion of proportions.

An insert adapted to be imbedded in a concrete Wall and arranged to reinovably receive a standard square-headed bolt, said insert consisting of a hollow metallic body formed with an upper pair of contiguous side walls having their inner faces arranged at right angles to each other, and with a pair of lower side walls offset from said upper side walls, and with a pair of inside lugs rising from the plane of the offset between said upper and lower walls and having faces standing at right angles to the faces of said upper side walls, the metal of said body being formed adjacent said lugs and said offset with a rectangular seat for the bolt head having two sides in line with said lower side walls and being notched between said lugs to reinovably receive the shaft of the bolt.

An insert adapted to be imbedded in a concrete wall and arranged to removably receive a standard square-headed bolt, said insert consisting of a hollow metallic body formed with a pair of upper contiguous side walls having their inner faces arranged at a right angle to each other, and with a second pair of upper side walls having their inner faces similarly arranged at a right angle to each other, and with apair of lower side walls ofiset from said first-1nentioned pair of upper side walls, and with a second pair of lower side walls offset from said second pair of upper side walls in a lower plane than said first-mentioned offset, and with a pair of opposite side walls extending from top to bottom of the insert and continuous with corresponding walls of said upper and lower side walls, said opposite side walls being formed with inside rightangled lugs and the metal of said body being formed adjacent said lugs and said first-mentioned offset with a rectangular seat for the bolt head and being notched between such lugs to reinovably receive the shaft of the bolt, and the inner faces of said second pair of upper side walls and the meeting faces of said lugs forming a rectangular passageway for the bolt head intersecting the seat for the bolt head, and the inner faces of said first and second mentioned lower side walls forming an approximately square passageway for the bolt head which is offset from said first mentioned passageway toward said bolt head seat.

An insert adapted to be imbedded in a concrete wall and arranged to reinovably receive a polygonal-headed bolt, said insert consisting of a hollow metallic body formed with a pair of contiguous side walls having their inner faces arranged angularly to engage faces of the bolt head, and with a second pair of contiguous side walls having their inner faces arranged at a similar angle to each other, and with a third pair of side walls continuous with corresponding walls of said first and second pairs of side walls, said third pair of side walls being formed with inside triangular lugs and the metal of said body being shouldered adjacent said firstmentioned side walls and lugs to form a polygonal seat for the bolt head and being notched between such lugs to reinovably receive the shaft of the bolt, and the inner faces of said second pair of side walls and the meeting faces of said lugs forming a polygonal passageway for the bolt head intersect-ing the seat for the bolt head.

An insert adapted to be inobedded in a concrete wall and arranged to removably receive a polygonal-headed bolt, said insert consisting of a hollow metallic body formed with an upper pair of contiguous side walls having their inner faces arranged angularly to engage faces of the bolt head, and with a pair of lower side walls offset from said upper side walls, and with a pair of inside triangular lugs rising from the plane of the offset between said upper and lower walls and having faces arranged to engage other faces of the bolt head, the metal of said body being formed adjacent said lugs and said offset with a polygonal sided seat for the bolt head having two sides in line with said lower side walls and being notched between said lugs to removably receive the shaft of the bolt.
