F. B. HAMBLIN COLLAPSIBLE AND ADJUSTABLE SHELVES Filed Dec. 7, 1925 Patented Get. 12, litzfii mass stares a raise FRED B. HAMBLIN, or s'r. LOUIS, iviissoca'i.
COLLAP SIBLE AND ADJUSTABLE SHELVES.
Application filed. December hung against a flat wall or against either a right or left angle of a'wall.
Another object -of the invention is to pro.- vide a Convenient portable shelf structure suitable for use as ashoe cabinet or a storage, or display container for other articles.
Additional advantages of the structure will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which, V g i Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the device set up; and
Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner in which the device is collapsedor folded.
In the embodiment of the invention, the
' device is shown as including a pair of side walls 1 and '2. The wall 2 is somewhat longer than the wall 1, forming an upper the walls 1 and 2 are a series of horizontal walls l arranged in vertical spaced'relationship and, connected with the side walls by double hinges 5 so, that the side walls may be folded one against the other with the walls 4L therebetween, in the manner clearly illustrated in Fig. Z'Q'f the drawing.
While it is not intended to limit the material from which the device may be made,
it is preferable to make it of relatively thick paper board with the hinges of strong I walls 1 and 2.
fabric adhered to members 4: wit-h the side wall. This framework may be covered if desired with cloth, such as cretonne, to give it a finished ap-. pearance.
The extension 3 of the wall 2 is provided with perforations 6 through which supports, such for instance as nails, may be projected to support the device against the wall of a room or other support, such as a cabinet or the like.
A back member, comprising a wall 7 and a pair of wings 8, said wings 8 being hinged to the back member 7 by fabric straps 9, is arranged to be removably connectedwith the The length of the back member is that of the wall 2 including'the ex- 7. 1925. Serial No. 759%..

Arranged transversely between the adjacent edges of the tension that-whenitheback member is in position, there will be a marginal flange forming a wall partially around the upper face of the upper end of the shelves t. The back memberis also provided with a per foration 1G by means f which it may be hung upon support mounted in a wall at 7 an angle to the wall carrying the supports projecting through the openings fi 1n the side wall. j Thejbaclrmember isarranged so that it may be removably connected with the side walls by providing snap connections, preferably in theform of glove fasteners, and including a socket member 1 1' connected into theside walls, and p by the wings 8 of the baclrmember.
I The snap devices are preferably disposed as shownin the drawings, namely, with two a ball member 12 carried spaced ball members carried by each'wing 8" and four spaced in each of v spaced-distances fromv the. corners of the walls. :Tt is thus possible to adjust the back socket members mounted memberjon either oneof themembers 1 so n a right that the; device be mounted 1 'llhe back member serves to reinforce and support the shelfstructure 'in horizontal adjustment and by disconnecting the back folded thereagainst with the shelf members ber connectedlwith thel wallQ, ma;
veniently adjusting the device so that it may be packed in a fiat condition for transportation.
The device is particularlyadaptedfor use as a portable shelf structure, because it is readily adjustable'and may be conveniently mounted. 'While it has a wide range of use, it is particularly useful as a shoe cabinet for traveling purposes. j
I am aware that the invention may be modified in certain particulars without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Vvhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the prising vertical of transversely ing hinged connection along the adjacent edge thereofwith the side members, a coninuous back adapted to close the back area extending spaced walls havthe side. walls land 2 at equally member from the wall .'1,the' wall 1 may be 1 pressed inwardly toward the , wall 2 and 1 Lil lli) releasably connected with the side member arranged to hold the device in extended adjustment when connected with said side member and to permit the device to be collapsed when released so that the .side menn bers and back wall may be folded flat against each other with the transverse members interposed between the side members.
2. A device of the class described eomprising-side members, one of which-is :ex-- tended upwardly beyond the top edge of the other forming an extension, said extension being provided with means for connecting the device with a support in-a vertical plane, a bacl; member comprising a wall and hinged wings connected with the walhdisengageable connecting members between the wings and opposite ends of said side mem bers, and a plurality of spaced walls having hinged connection with the side walls.
A device of the class described comprising side members, one of which is eX- tended upwardly beyond the top edge of the other forming an extension, said extension being provided with means for connecting the device with a support in a vertical plane, a back member comprising a wall and hinged wings connected with the wall, disengageable connecting members between the wings and opposite ends of said side'menr- 'bers, and a plurality of spaced walls havhinged connection with the side walls,
said back member extending to -the plane of the upper edge or the longer one of said side members, and said member being providec'l wit'l rmeans "for connecting it with I suppor me erti pl n at an angle to t e plan supp t n the S d e b 4,. and a plurality of fastening devices, one
member of which is carried by said wings and the other member of whlch is carried :by said walls, whereby said end member may be releasably connected with opposite ends of'said side walls.
5. A device of the class described co1nprising side walls, a plurality oi transversely extending walls, double-hinge strips connecting said transverse walls with said side walls, and permitting one side wall to be folded against the other with the trans verse walls between, an end member, wing bers' hinged to said end member, a pluy of fastening devices, one member of which is c tried by said wings and the other member of which is carried by said walls, whereby said end member may be releasab-ly connected with opposite :ends of said side walls and means for connecting one of said side wallsand the-back wall'aranged so that when connected the device will "be held in extended position and when released the device may be collapsed, and the back, side and transverse walls foldedin fiat relation sh p- I FRED B.
