Application filed October 20, 1925.
My invention relates to tongs, designedfor the handling of logs, railroad ties and other timbers, the object and purpose being to provide a strong, eflicient and cheaply constructed tool for this purpose.
In the-accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my tool applied to a stick of timber; Figure 2 represents a side view, also applied to a stick of timber; Figure 8 is a view partially in section on line 38, Figure 2; Figure e is a detail View of the tong or gripping jaws proper; Figures 5, d and 7 are tra nnentary views, showing different methods by which the handles may be attached to each othv 1-1 representthe handles. each carrying at its inner end what may be termed the union bracket 2, and these two brackets swingingly joined by means of the pin or rivet 3, thus permitting the tree or outer ends of the handles to move freely away from and towards each other. Rigidly secured to the under face of one of the handles, at its inner end, is the brace or shoe 4, designed to rest against the timber being handled. Loosely attached to the under face of each handle, intermediate its ends, as at 5, is the bar 6, carrying at its outer 01' free end a hook or curved jaw member '2'. The two bars 6-6 are pivoted together adjacent their centers by the pivot 8, thus forming movable opposing gripping jaws.
With this construction it is obvious that as the outer ends of the handles 1l are separated by the operator, the hooks or jaw members 7'? will open, thus permitting the two jaws to grasp the opposite sides of the object to be handled, and as upward or lifting pressure or force is brought to bear on the outer ends of the handles, the outer ends of the handles will approach each other, the brace or footpiece a will engage the object, and the books or jaws 7 -7 will be drawn together, causing them to firmly engage the opposite sides of the object, thus enabling the operators to manipulate the same in such manner as desired.
It is obvious that the inner ends of the handles may be swingingly united by any one of various well known means such, for
Serial No. 63,747.
instance, as eye bolts or screws engaging each other, universal joint, etc., as shown in. Figures 5, 6 and 7.
I claim l. in a device of the character described, a pair of handles swingingly joined at their inner ends, and a bar loosely attached to eachhandlc intermediate its ends and suspended at substantially right angles thereto, each of said bars carrying at its free or swinging end a hook or jaw inember, said two bars being pivoted together adjacent their centers.
2. In device of the character described, a pair of handles swingingly joined at their inner ends, a depending shoe rigidly attached to the inner end of one of said handles. and a bar loosely attached to each handle iutezi'inediate its ends and suspended at substantially right angles thereto, each of said bars carrying at its free or swinging end a hook or jaw member, said two bars being pivoted together adjacenttheir centers.
3. In a device of the character described, a pair of handles, each carrying at its inner end a hinge member, said two members being swingingly united, and a bar loosely attached to each handle intermediate its ends and suspended at substantially right angles thereto, each of said bars carrying at its free or swinging end a hook or jaw member,- said two bars beingpivoted togetheradjacent their centers.
4. In a device of the character described, a pair of handles. each carrying at its inner end ahinge member, said two members being swingingly united, a depending shoe rigidly attached to the inner end oi one of said handles, and a bar loosely attached to, each handle intermediate its ends and suspended at substantially right angles thereto, each of said bars carrying at its free or swinging end a hook or jaw member, said two bars being pivoted together adjacent their centers.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto atfixed my signature.
CHARLES v. MAMMEN.
