IMPROVEMENT IN ORGAN-CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,213, dated February 23, 1875; application filed January 18, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. LOMAS, of New Haven, in the county of New I-Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Organ-Oase; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of the cases of reed-organs and similar instruments7 the object being principally to construct the case to serve the double purpose of musical instrument and writing-desk; and it consists, first, in making the book-rack a solid panel or leaf hinged to the case, so that when turned up it serves the purpose of book-rack, and when turned down the reverse surface forms a desk top or leaf 5 the space back of the leaf utilized by shelves, pigeon-holes, or like purposes 5 second, in pivotin g the front panel of the pediments so that they may be turned to open the case to increase the volume of sound, and at the same time to serve as lampbrackets, as more fully hereinafter described.

The part of the case below the line A may be of any of the known constructions, with suitable inclosure for the key-board. Directly above this the leaf B is hinged to the case, as at a. This leaf may be ornamented or paneled to any desirable extent upon the outsidethat is, the exposed side. When turned up, as shown, at the lower edge, a ledge, C, is provided upon which to set the music, the leai` inclined backward, as seen in Fig. 2, to support the music. The leaf is shown as arranged between the two pediments D D', but these are not essential. The top E of the case in rear of the leaf projects forward, so that the leaf lies back against that, and thereby incloses a space, F, which is utilized by a shelf,

The leaf B may be turned down, as 1n Fig.

2, broken lines, presenting the reverse side up,

which should be plain, or as usual for writing-r desk tops. This makes a convenient writingA desk, and the spaces in the rear a convenient receptacle for the appurtenances thereto belonging. The leaf may be provided with a suitable lock to secure it in its closed position. Thus is combined in one the organ-case and a convenient writing-desk.

The front L of each pediment is pivoted so that the one end (preferably the upper) may be turned outward, and the other end inward to bring them into a horizontal position, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 2, and in D', Fig. l, and stopped in that position by any suitable device. These open to the interior of the case, and produce a corresponding increase of volume of sound, and at the same time form a bracket for the support of a lamp, as at D', Fig. 2. The front of these panels may be made highly ornamental, and thereby add to the esthetic effect.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In an organcase, the leaf B, hinged to the case, one surface being arranged to form the book-rack, and the reverse the writingdesk top, substantially as described.

2. In an organ-case, the leaf B hinged to the case, and arranged to form in one position the book-rack and inclose the space F, and in the other to open said space and form the desktop, substantially as described.

3. In an organ-case having the pediments D D', the fronts L, pivoted so as to be turned and supported in a horizontal position to open the pediments and form a bracket, or to close the pediments, substantially as described.
