The principal object of the present invention is the provision of an adjusting device Jfor increasing or decreasing the ei'iective crank arm and the volume of the counterpoise t o compensate Jfor changes in its moment due to variations in pressure as effected by the differences between existing temperatures and the temperature at which the counterpoise is loaded.
In the present disclosure only one trunnion of the oscillatory body, with the counterpoise attached thereto, is illustrated and described as the structure connected to the other .trunnion would be a duplicate.
To these and other ends, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement7 and combination of elements, described hereinater and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.

The casing 12 is encircled by a trunnion band 17 carrying trunnions 18 whereby the counterpoise is pivotally mounted, preferably in ball bearings, in the sides of a carriage 19 slidably mounted between a pair of seats Q0V on the inner side of each of the. side walls of the 'frame 9. The carriage is formed with a closed end 21, the purpose oi which will presently appear and may, to 'facilitate assembly, also include trunnion caps 22. rl`he carriage 19 is adapted to be reciprocated to vary the distance between the axis of oscillation and the counterpoise tiunnions thereby increasing or decreasing the effective length of the crank arm and the volume of the counter-poise with respect to a predetermined Zero of initial loading. This adjustment is necessary in pneumatic counterpoises to compensate for variations in its moment due to changes between the temperature at loading over the temperature when in use.
Any suitable means for reciprocating the carriage may be provided, that herein shown consisting of a screw rod 23 journaled in the closed end 10 of the frame and held against longitudinal movement in either direction by its head 24: anda collar The rod threads into the end 21 of the carriage so that the carriage is reciproca-ted upon rotation of the rod.
vFor the purpose of indicating the displacement of the carriage with respect to a Zero setting, a slide 26 graduated, plus and minus, in values of degrees of temperature is secured to one of the counterpoise trimnions -by a pin 27, the slide moving in a groove 2S and the pin accommodated by a slot 29, both in the outer side wall of the crank arm frame 9. A reference mark 8() is provided on the frame against which the scale may be read. The counterpoise is loaded to a predetermined pressure at a predetermined temperature with the Zero ot the scale and the reference mark in coincidence. Y
Attention is'directed to the fact that in the present invention the effective length of' the crank arm is obtained by adjustment and is not automatically increased during elevation of the oscillatory movement, as described in my Patent No. 1,503,589.
In the present instance it will be understood that self-contained means may be provided Within the counterpoise to compensate for divergence between the moment curves ofthe counterpoise and the oscillatory body as the latter is elevated above 45C.
l/Vhile in the foregoing there has been illustrated and described such arrangement and combination of elements, as constitute the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless desired to emphasize the fact that interpretation of the invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims.
l claim:
i. The combination with a support having a bracket, of a trunnion journaled in the support, a crank iixed to the trunnion and formed With a frame, a pneumatic counterpoise casing disposed within the frame, a plunger Working in the casing and pivoted in the bracket, a trunnion band iaston the casing, trunnions on the band. a carriage slidably mounted on the inner side Walls of the frame and receiving the counterpoise trunnions, a rod j ournaled in the closed end of the frame and threaded in the carriage whereby to reciprocate the carriage and vary the effective arm and volume of the counterpoise, a scale graduated in degrees temperature and secured to one of the counterpoise trunnions to partake of its adjusting movement, and a reference on the frame against which the scale may be read.

3. The combination with a support having a bracket, of a trunnion journaled in the support, a crank fixed to the trunnion and having an open portion, a pneumatic counterpoise casing disposed in the open portion, a plunger Working in the casing and pivoted in the bracket, trunnions :tast on the casing, a carriage slidably mounted on the crank and receiving the counterpoise trunnions` means ltor reciprocating the carriage to vary the effective arm and volume of the counterpoise, a scale graduated in degrees temperature and secured to one of the counterpoise trunnions to partake of its adjusting movement, and a reference against which the scale maybe read.

The combination with a support having a bracket, of a trunnion journaled in the support, a crank iiXed to the trunnion, a carriage slidably mounted on the crank, a counterpoise trunnioned in the carriage and having a plunger pivoted in the bracket, means for reciprocating the carriage to adjust the volume and etl'ective arm of the counterpoise, and means for indicating the amount of adjustment.
5. The combination with a support having a bracket, of a trunnion journaled in the support, a crank fixed to the trunnion, a carriage slidably mounted on the crank, a counterpoise trunnioned in the carriage and having a plungerpivoted in the bracket, and means for reciprocating the carriage to displace the counterpoise trunnions.

The combination with a support, of a trunnion journaled therein, a crank lined to the trunnion, a' counterpoise having trunnions movably supported from the crank, means for maintaining said trunnions in tired position, means whereby they may be 'displaced to adjust the volume and effective arm of the counterpoise, and means for indicating the amount of adjustment.
7. Thecombination with a support, of a trunnion journaled therein, a crank fixed to the trunnion, a counterpoise having trunnions movably supported from the crank, means ,for maintaining said trunnions in fired position, and means whereby they may be displaced to adjust the volume and eiective arm of the counterpoise.
8. The combination with a support, of a trunnion journaled therein, a crank fixed to the trunnion, a. counterpoise, means for supporting the counterpoise from the crank, means for changing the point of support, and means for indicating the amount of change.
9. The combination with a support, of a trunnion journaled therein, ak crank Xed to the trunnion, a counterpoise, means for supporting the counterpoise from the crank, and means for changing the point of support.
10. The combination With a trunnion, of a crank fixed thereto, a counterpoise adapted to be supported by the crank, means Whereby the point of support may be changed to Vary the arm and effective Volume of the counterpose, and means yfor indicating the amount of change.
11. The combination with a trunnon, of a crank Xed thereto, a oounterpos-e adapted to be supported by the Crank, and means whereby the point of support may be changed to vary the effective arm and v01- ume of the Counterpoise.
l2. The combination with a pvoted body, of a crank Connected thereto, a counterpoise adapted to be supported by the crank and means whereby the point of support may be changed.
