SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 311,708, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed June 12, 1884. (Modch) To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. AMOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saxton, in the county of Bed ford and State of Pen nsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engines; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view. Fig. 418 a transverse sectional view of the same, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
The invention relates to oscillating steamengines, and its novel and useful feature is the making of the ports of the cylinder open on the convex face of a cylindrical segment, the said segment being situated vertically above, and secured to, the cylinder, and having the centerof its are coincident with the central transverse line of the trunnions upon which the cylinder oscillates. The ports ot'the steanr chest which are vertically above the cylinder,
"to proper bearings for the trunnions I) b of the cylinder B, the said trunnions being somewhat nearer the front end of the cylinder than to the rear end, so as to counterbalance the weight of the piston-rod G.
D is the crank-shaft of the engine, turning in proper bearings fixed t0 the bed A,.connected with the pist0n-rod G by the crank d, and having properly attached the fly-Wheel c.
E is the segment of a cylinder fixed to the steam-cylinder B, vertically above the same, or cast in one piece with it. The upper surface, 6, of the said segment is made on the arc of a circle the center of which is coincident with the central longitudinal line of thetrunnions b b.
F F are the ports from the front and rear ends of the cylinder, respectively. These ports open at the points f and f on the con vex surface of the segment.
G G are equal and similar uprights standing from the bed of the engine at opposite points on each side of the cylinder B, the upper ends of which are flattened and extended horizontally frontward and backward, and have pass ing through said extensions, on each side, the screws 9 g, &c., which bind the steam-chest on the uprights and bring its concave lower surface to bear on the convex upper surface of the segment E.
H is the steam-chest, the lower concave surface, 72, of which his on the upper convex surface, (2, of the segment E, and provided with the front and rear steam-ports, h and if, respectively, and the exhaustport h, situated between and equally distant from both.

Each leafspring I has passing through its center the screw 2'', which enters the top of an upright, G, and serves to depress the spring, and con sequently the steam-chest, on which the spring rest-s,so as to bring the concave surface h of said chest intoclose contact with the convex surface c of the segment E and make them steamtight without causing too much friction, as the springs will give sufficiently to allow the segment and attached cylinder to oscillate.
The operation of the engine is sufficiently evident from the description, for as the front port, F, of the cylinder oscillates under the port h" of the steam-chest it will exhaust into the same, the rear port, F, at the same time taking steam from the port h" of the steam chest. Any wear between the faces h and eis easily remedied by means of the screws and leaf-springs I I.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an oscillating steam-engine, the coinbination, with the cylinder B,'segment E, uprights G G, and steam-chest H, of the springs I I and screws 13 t, substantially as specified.
2. An oscillating steam-engine having its cylinder provided on its upper side with a fixedsegment, in combination with a steamchest having an engaging concave face, and provided with springs adapted to keep the said cylinder pressed down upon the said segment,
substantially as specified.
3. The combination,withthe frame supporting the steam-cylinder having the vertical standards, of the steam-cylinder having the segmental portion, the steam-chest, springs for pressing the steam-chest in the direction of the cylinder, and means for connecting the chest with the said standards,substantially as specified,
4. The combination, with the steam-cylinder having the segmental portion and means for supporting the same, of a steam-chest provided with spring engaging devices, and means of adjusting the tension of the spring, whereby the said steam-chest may be kept in engagement with the segmental portion of the cylinder, substantially as specified.
