FORM FOR CIRCULAR CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION.

The object of my invention is to provide a form for the making of circular concrete construction work such as concrete pipes or columns.
More particularly, my invention'relates to a form comprising a number of sections of substantially uniform size and arranged side by side in circular outline for forming a form for pouring a concrete pipe or the like.
It may be mentioned that drain or sewer pipes are ordinarily made in diameters divisible by 3, that is, drain tiles are ordinarily 27 inches, 30 inches and increase 3 inches from one size to another, and it is my object to provide sections of a form wherein one section removed, will make the difierence be tween a 36 inch pipe and a 39 inch pipe.
Still a further object is to provide on each section of the form a metal plate which is capable of having its are or curved portion changed so that the same section can be used in making a 2 1- inch pipe or a 18 inch pipe.
Still a further object is to provide a means on the inner and outer forms for locking the sections together and for drawing them in closed position.
Still a further object is to provide a ring adapted to coact with the forms for causing a tongue to be formed on the upper end of the concrete pipe which is used in making the joint between adjacent pipes.
Still a further object is to make each section of the form channel shaped in cross section so that when placed side by side, the sections will be thoroughly braced and will not bulge or spread apart.
Still a further object is to provide a form for sewer pipe or the like wherein the same forms can be used for making pipe, the walls of which may be of different thickness.
li ith these and other objectsin view, my nrention consists in the construction, ar- 'angement and combination of the various warts of my device, whereby the objects coneinplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:.

In the accompanying I have drawings,
used the reference character A to indicate generally a section of the form. Each section A includes a bottom reinforcing bar 10 and an upper reinforcing bar 11.
The bars 10 and 11 cross section and have slightly curved.
The bars 10 sheet metal plate 12 are channel shaped in their front sides and 11 have fixed thereto a which has flanges 18 sired and are ordinarily of suificient width so as to equal 3 X 3.1416; the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth.

The section A. just referred to is one of a number of outer sections shown in Figure l of the drawings.
Sections B made similar to sections A form the inner wall or form for the pouring of the concrete pipe. The plates 12 of the sections B are curved outwardly somewhat, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, the purpose of which is to provide a complete circular outline when the sections are placed side by side.
The sections, when placed side by side, are
connected together by the bolts 15 which extend through two adjacent sections and through the upper bars 11 and the lower bars 10, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawings.
The bolts 15 also extend through the flanges 13 of the sheet 12.
From the construction of the parts just described, it will be seen that the sections can be quickly and easily connected together.
All the sections are connected together as has just been explained, with the exception of the last or connecting sections, and I provide connecting sections referred to by the reference characters C and D. The section C is connected to one side of one of the sections A and the section D is connected to one side of the sections A.
The section C is made very much like the section A with the exception that T proviue a gear 21 mounted on a shaft 22 which is formed in the two flanges of the reinforcing bar 11.
A similar gear 21 and shaft 22 is also formed in the lower bar 10.
The upper ends of the shafts 22 are provided with squared portions 23 for pern ting a wrench or crank to be secured thereto for rotating the gears 21. The section C has the upper and lower bars 10 and 11 formed with a rack bar 24 adapted to coact with the gears 21, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
A plate 25 is secured to the bars 10 and 11 of thesection C and is provided with only one flange 13 and has its other end turned in only a slight distance so as to form a short flange 26. the purpose of providing the short flange 26 isto prevent the same from interference with the rack bars 24: which coact with the gears 21.
Secured to the bars 10 and 11 of the section D is a plate 27 of considerable length to the flange 33 by means of rivets 35.
which has one flange 13 thereon made exactly like the flanges 13 on the plates 12.
The free end of the plate 2? rests against the plate 25 and is permitted to slide thereover when the gears 21 and rack bars 24 are operated.
From the construction of the parts just described, it will be seen that by rotating the gears 21, T am able to draw the sections "C and D .closer together and in turn complete- CA I lower end of the concrete pipe, I provide a ring 28 which is formed with a shoulder 29 at one end and ashoulder 30 at its other end. A ring 23 of different diameters is used for making pipes or different sizes.
The inner form sections B rest against the shoulder-29 or" the ring 28, as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. The bottom bars 10 may be provided with a downwardly extending flange 31 which rests against the outer edge of the ring 28 i r retaining the inner and outer orm sections spaced apart for making a hollow pipe, the walls of which are of any predetermined thickness.
When it is desired to make a pipe, the walls of which are of less thickness than that shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, then a lower bar 10 is used which does not have the flange 31 thereon, and in that case, the lower bar 11 abuts against the shoulder 30, as clearly shown in Figure 6 01 the drawings.
From the construction of the parts just described it will be seen that when the lowvr gears 21 and rack bars 24 are operated both on the inner and outer wall of the form, then the complete number of sections will be securely held in position against the ring 28.
In order to form a coacting tongue and groove on the other end of the concretepipe for permitting the pipes to coact w th each other when laid end to end as in sew w :3 I provide a ring 32. The ring is provided with an upwardly extending annular flange 33.
A nuiinber of holdingstraps 34 are riveted 1 116: holding straps 34 have horizontal DOTtiOl'lS 36 which abut against the inner wall or sections B of the form. The upper edge of the flange 32 is spaced from the inner form or sections B for permitting concrete to be poured therethrough when the concrete pipe 37 is just about to be completed.
The outer edge of the ring 32 rests against the inner side of the sections A.
it will be noted that when the upper gears 21 and rack bars 2d are operated, the sections and A will be drawn toward each other and held apart in proper position by the ring 32 and the straps thereon.
In order to hold the ring 32 in proper position, I provide each of the straps 3 2 with an extended horizontal portion 38, which has a hook bolt 39 mounted therein.
The hook bolt 39 is adap d to engage one side of the upper bar 11 ot the section A. The hook bolts 39 retain the ring in proper position.
In order to lock the gears 21 and rack bars 2% in proper closed position, I provide a locking pawl 40 for each or the gears 21. The locking pawl i0 is provided with a slot 41 through which is extended a locking or set screw .22. The set screw 42 is threaded into a wall 43, which is "formed as a part of the casting of the bars 10 and 11, which are used in the sections C and D.
The locking pawl 40 is formed with a hand engaging tab 14 whereby the locking pawl 40 may be slid into or out of engagement with the gear 21.
In Figure 3 of the drawings, I have shown the locking pawl 40 in engaged position with the gear 21 and in that case, the parts will be held against any spreading movement.
In Figure 7 of the drawings, 1 have shown the plate 12 formed in the arc of a circle 0*? comparatively less diameter than that shown in figure 8 of the drawings.
1V hen a great number of sections A are used. that is, for making a concrete pipe of considerable diameter, hen in order to get the outside of the pipe in proper outline, I loosen the center bolt 18 and place a washer 45 between the plate 12 and the upper and lower bars 10 and 11 and then when the bolt 18 is again inserted and tightened, itwill retain the plate 12 in position where it will, when placed with a number of other sections operate successfully in connection with thepouring of a pipe of considerable diame ter.
In Figure 7 the two end bolts 18 are loosened and washers 45 placed thereon so that when the bolts tightened, the curvature of the plate 12 will be greater than the curvature of the plate shown in Figure 8 of the drawings and in that case the section will conveniently operate in making of pipes of less diameter.
It will be noted that when the plate 12 is bent to form the arc of a circle, as shown in Figure 7 of the drawings, it is necessary terial so that various arcs of circles may be.

Practical operation.
In the practical operation of my form for concrete construction, 1 first place the ring 28 upon any suitable suoport'and thereafter mount the inner wall forn'ied of the sections B upon the ring 28 and against the shoulder 29. The lower gear 21 and rack bar as are then operated for spreading the sections wherein they will be engaged against the shoulder 29 of the ring 28.
After the sections 13 have been moved against the shoulder 29, then the locking pawl 10 is moved into position where it coacts with the gear 21. The upper gear 21 and rack bar 2%, which form the locking device are also operated and then locked in proper position.
The outside wall formed of the sections A is then placed upon the ring 28.
Vhen a thick walled pipe is desired, then the flange 31 is arranged to abutagainst the outer edge of the ring- 28. The lower locking device consisting of the gear 21 and the rack bar 2%, is then drawn together for causing the flange 31 to securely engage the outer edge-of the ring 28.
The upper locking device on the outer wall is then drawn together to just about the proper size. The concrete is then poured in between the inner and outer walls for forming the pipe.
After the concrete has been poured in to just about the upper edge or" the outer wall of the form, then'the ring 32 is placed in position as shown in Figure 5 of the draw-- ings. After the ring is placed in this position, then the locking device on the upper end of the outer wall is tightened for securely holding the ring 32 in position,
and at the same time forcing the loose concrete thereagainst.
If the form is not completely filled with concrete, the loose concrete can be poured in between the upper edge of the flange 33 or the ring 32 and the inner wall of the form. The upper edge of the concrete pipe 37 can be smoothed oil with the'upper edge of the flange 33 as a guide.
. When a. concrete pipe with a comparatively thin wall is desired, then the outer wall. formed with sections A is placed upon the ring 28 and adapted to engage the shoulder 30, as clearly shown in Figure 6 of the drawings.
. The outerwall of my form can be used for the pouring of pillars in concrete construction work.
One of the advantages of my form is the fact that I am able to add or subtract any one section therefrom for making columns or pipes of various diameters.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified form of structure or use of mechanical. equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. A form of the class described comprising sections, each section comprising a bend able plate having a mold surface and reinforcing flanges along each side of the plate, a reinforcing member positioned at each end of said plate having one of its sides secured to said mold surface and its ends secured to said flanges.
2. A form of the class described comprising sections, each section comprising a bend able plate having a mold surface and reinforcing flanges along each side of the plate, a reinforcing member at each end of said plate, openings in said members, and registering openings in the mold surface and flanges of said plate, bolts for extending through said openings and securing said members to said plate, the openings in said flanges being slotted whereby said plates may be adjusted as to curvature without removing the bolts through the flanges thereof.
3. A form for circular concrete construction comprising a bendable plate having a portion of the edges thereof bent at substantially right angles to the body portion whereby reinforcing flanges are provided, reinforcing members at the ends of said plates, bolts for securing said reinforcing men'ibers to the body portion and the flanges thereof, slots in said flanges through which said bolts extend whereby Washers inserted between said reinforcing members and said body portion for varying the curvature of said plates without removing the bolts through the flanges thereof.
