Description

J. H. GEORGE SAFETY GAS COCK LOCK Filed Jnzly 51 1923 Patented Get. 5, 19.26.
JOHN H. GEORGE OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
.SAFETY GAS-COCKiOCK.
Application filed July 31, 1923. Serial No. 654,799.
My invention relates to gas cocks such for example, as areillustrated in the gas stove shown in one of the figures and particularly to means for locking the gas cock to closed position.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a mount for the lock integral with the gas cock body upon which a lock may be mounted to engage with the pin normally used to limit movement of the valve element, and to have the release handle at the valve stem.-
A further purpose is to provide a mount rigid with the valve body the body opposite to the recess for the clog pin within the upper surface of the valve body and to straddle the valve element by the look. I Further purposes will appear'in the specification and in the claims. p
I have preferred to illustrate my invention by only a single form, selecting a form which is practical, inexpensive and efiicient and which at the same time illustrates the principles involved.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a gas stove to which my invention is applied.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a gas cock including the valve and separate from the stove and including my invention.
Figure 3 is an elevation corresponding with Figure 2 but with the lock in a different position.
Figure 4: is a section upon line H of Figure 2.
Flgure 5 1s a broken top plan view partly sectioned, showing the form illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a section upon line 66 of Figure 1 but with the lock raised in the position shown in Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view of the lock member detachedfrom its setting.
In the drawings similar numerals indicate like parts.
The gas stove 8 is shown as provided with gas cocks of which the bodies are shown at 9 and the valve stems of which appear at 10. They are turned by handles 11 and are provided with pin 12 which engages with the faces 13 and 14 of the recess 15 in the top of the gas cock body to limit opening and closing movement of the valve within the body. As thus described the gas cocks and upon that side of.
valves are the same as those generally on the market at the present time. p
In order to provide a simple and con-- venlent support for a locking member to prevent accidental or unauthorized opening of the valve, I form ears lh rigid with the body. They may be soldered or brazed upon it or may be cast as part of the body.
Between these cars 16 I pivot a locking member 17, preferably of pressed metal, which has downwardly. extending side ears 18 to form pivot bearings. A pivot pin 19 passes through the cars 16 and 18 and is riveted or otherwise secured tolprevent with drawal. I The locking member is open at the center at 20 to pass the valve and in order to avoid necessity for undue size of opening is slotted or otherwise cut at 21 to pass the pin 12. The outer end of the locking member is spring pressed upwardly near the pivot by the spiral spring 22 which surrounds tie pin 19, pressing one end against the locking member at 23 and the other end against the portion 24 ofthe body The forward end of the locking member is provided with a locking projection 25 and a thumb release 26, the latter being within convenient range of the users thumb when he turns the gas valve handle.
The locking projection 25 is lifted by means of the thumbpiece 26. It may or may not when the pin is stopped against the side 14 of the recess, fill the space between the pin and the other side 13 of the recess. Preferably, however one side of the proj ection fits and is supported against the side 13 of the recess while the other side of the projection nearly fits the space which is left when the pin rests against the side 1a of the recess.
The projection is so formed upon that edge as to avoid wedging action tending to squeeze the projection out of the recess. For this purpose it is preferably slightly concaved at 27. I
In operation with the parts in the posiion of Figure 2 the handle 11 is grasped by the hand of the user and the thumb raises the release piece 26, lifting it to the position seen in Figure 8. VJhile the parts arein this position the valve member is turned to open the valve.
My invention is particularly well suited for use by manufacturing concerns building stoves or building gas cocks intended to be mounted upon the stoves, since the rigid mount for the lock may then be cast as part of the body of the gas cock.
It Will be obvious that variations and modifications will be suggested to ti o e skilled in the art by my illustration herein and it is my purpose to cover all such as come Within the reasonable spirit and scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a. gas cock, a gas. cook body having a mount for a lock permanently secured thereto, in combination with a gas cock valve, a lock pivotally supported upon the mount, surrounding the stem otthe valve and. engaging With a movable part. of the valve across the valve from the mount and a lock release at the stem of the valve.
2. In a gas cook lock, a gas cook bodythe pin-and fitting across the valve from the pivot point into the recess to stop. opening movement-of the valve.
3-. In avas: cock lock a as cock bod rhav b a 6 mg a recess in the upper end; a: mount for a lock permanently fastened tothe body, a
valve element fitting into the body, a pin on the valve element engaging the Walls of the recess to limit movement of the valve element and a stop pivoted upon the mount, surrounding the valve element and fitting into the recess to rest against the Wall of the recess at one side and to receive the thrust of the pin on the other site to stop opening movement of the valve.
4-. In a gas cook look, a cock body having arecess in the upper end, a mount for the lock permanently fastened to the body on the side thereof opposite to the recess, a valve element fitting into the-body, a pin on the valve element engaging the Walls of the recess to limit movement of the therein and a lock release at the stem of the valve.
5. In a gas cock lock, a gas cock body having a recess in the upper end, a mount for a lock permanently fastenedto the-body,
a valve element fitting into the body, a pin on the valve element engaging the Walls of the recess to limit movement of the valve-e1- ement and a lock pivoted inthe mount, spring-pressed toward the body of the gas cock surrounding the, valve element and.
entering the recess to engage a Wallet the recess at one side and receive the thrust of the pin at the opposite side. stopping opening movement.
