THOMAS C. s'r arQ,
FOLDING BED.
Application filed August 8 This invention relates to improvements in folding beds and has particular reference to a folding bed which when closed has the appearance of an ordinary davenport.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a folding bed having a novel arrangement of co-operating parts, whereby the folding and unfolding of the bed may be accomplishedin a minimum amount of time and with a minimum amount of effort on the art of: the operator. V
Another object is to provide a bed which will accommodate a full thickness mattress in counter-distinction to the ordinary pad mattress commonly employed with folding beds of this character.
Further objects are to provide means for automatically operating the back of the bed when the front frame is initially folded or unfolded, whereby the front frame sections may be properly housed.
Other objects andadvantages' will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a side elevation of my bed in a folded position with one of the sides removed so as to show the interior mechanism thereof,
Figure II is a view similar to Figure I but with the bed partly unfolded.
Figure III is a side elevation of the bed in an unfolded position, on a reduced scale,
Figure IV is a top plan viewof Figure III on a reduced scale.
In the accompanyingdrawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 5 and 6 refer to parallel braces which are joined by side pieces 7 and 8. EX- tending between the parallel braces 5 and 6, are spacers 9 and 11. The brace 5 has secured thereto a back frame 12. It is to be understood, however. that there are two of these braces on opposite sides of the bed which have connected thereto on the inside thereof, curved portions 13 the purpose of which will be later seen.
A top cushion frame 14 is hingedlv connected as at 16 to the back frame 12. Hinged as at 47 to the spacer 1924. Serial so. 730,'94'3 tached the bedp'roper consisting of a foldable frame having a wire fabric stretched therein. This frame will be divided in three sections, a top or head section, an intermedh ate-section, and av bottomsection. The bottom section comprises a, substantially U- shaped frame designated by thenumeral 22, and having a foot board 23 secured thereto. This foot section is pivoted to the intermediate section as by pivots 24 and 26, which pivots also serve to connect legs 27. The legs 27 are in turn connected by acrossbrace 28.
A chain'29' connects the brace 28 to the seat frame 18. The pivots 24 and 26 also serve to connect one end of pivoted braces 31. and 32, respectively, the opposite end of which braces are pivoted as at 33 and 34, respectively, to the seat section 18.
The intermediate section comprises parallel members 36 and 37 pivoted as before mentioned to the pivots 24 and 26, the opposite ends of the intermediate section are pivoted as shown at 38 and 39 to the parallel members 41 and 42 of the head section, the opposite end of which members are connected by a tubular member 43. The ends of this tubular member are pivotally connected by curved links 44 to the top cushion frame 14.
The numeral 46 designates a link pivoted 11, and a similar link is attached to the spacer 9. To the free end of this link is pivoted as at 48 a supporting brace 49, the free end of which is pivoted at at 51 to the parallel member 41. It is to be also understood that the opposite side of the bed is equipped in a similar manner.
A. lug 52 is secured to the brace 49 and is adapted to ride upon the upper surface of the spacers 9 and 11. It will be noted that the rear portion of the spacers is depressed as shown at 53.
The numeral 54 designates a spring extending between brackets 56 and 57 secured to the back frame and back cushion frame respectively.
At 58 I have shown latches for maintainor SAN RAFAEL, o nrronnrAjAssrenon or ONE-HALF 'ro WIL- 5 LIAM sari/mt, or sAn RAF EL, CALIFORNIA; 1 V
9 the rear end of thehead frame will start ing the foot section in locked position dur ing a portion of the folding and unfolding operation. v
The "operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the bed is in an unfolded positioni'asshown in Figure'III, and it"is desired to fold the be'd, .the'- foot section is first grasped and moved upon its pivots 24 and 26 so as to assume the relative posi tion with respect to the intermediate sec tion as shown in Figure-II, after which the cross brace 28 is grasped and lifted, and the chain'29,'at this time acts to liinit the pivotal connection of the legs 27, with the result that the bed as a whole willbe moved. rearwardly until the tubular member 48' contacts .thecurved portions 1G,after which vated position during the time the sameis folded and duringthe major portion of the opening and closingoperation.
The-links 46 permit the action above described and it Will be noted by viewing Fig-o ures :II and III that when the bed is-moved to a half folded .or fully unfolded position,
these links 46 will rest upon lugs 52 secured to each of the spacers.
t will be further noted that whenthe bed is in open position the head section is supported from the back cushion frame by the curved links 44:.
It is to-be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size'and arrangement- 0f parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the: invention orthe'scope'of thesubjoined "claim.
Havingthus described my invention, 1
,1 Gi /1m I Ina dev ce or the character described, a
base frame'includingrecessed spacers and a' back frame, a top cushion frame'hingedly connected to the backframe, a foldable sectional bed bottom having'one-ofits sections linked'to said top cushion frame,- means for supporting said sectional bed bottom includ ing a plurality of legs and supporting braces, lugs carried by, said. supporting braces and adapted toride'onthe-topsurfaces of the recessed'spacers, atubula r mem-- ber carried by the head section ofsaid bed bottom, and. curvedportions positioned on the inside of. the back frame andadapte'd to slidably receive thereon'the tubular .mem'- ber when the device is folded'or unfolded.
In testimony whereof I 'afli'x my signature.
