Description

Sept. 28 1926. 1,601,277
C. EL WERLE ATHLETIC GLOVE Filed May 22, 1925\ FICE- CHARLES E. WERLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'IO GEORGE REACH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATHLETIC GLOVE.
Application filed May 22, 1925. Serial No. 32,096.
My invention relates to athletic gloves and more particularly to the type known in baseball as fielders gloves.
T ie invent-ion aims to provide an im= proved connection between the thumb and forefinger of such gloves, whereby greater strength is secured at the point where the greatest strains occur in the actual use of the glove during play.
A further object of my invention is to provide a structure in which, due to the connection between the thumb and forefinger, a pocket is formed in which a ball, caught by the wearer of the glove, will be securely held, there being no tendency for the ball to slip out through the space between the thumb and forefinger.
I am aware that gloves have been provided with webs between the thumb and forefinger, but my device is a distinct advance in the art and possesses many advantages over the structures now on the market.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, more particularl pointed out in the claims, and is clearly shown in the accompanying rawing, in
' V which Figure 1 is an elevation of a glove embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section.-
Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a baseball glove comprising a palm portion 2, fingers 3 and a thumb t set into the palm portion 2. The fingers 3 and thumb at are. made up of front and back portions 5 and 6 respectively, which have their edges turned in, a welt strip 7 being interposed between them and they being secured together by stitching passing through the iii-turned edges and the welt 7 to form a seam 8. This structure is common in the manufacture of such gloves and forms per se no part of my invention. I 1
In its preferred form my invention com prlses an integral web member 9, of leather or other suitable materlal, havmg side portions 10 and 11 and integral cross members 12 and 13, the middle portion being cutaway to form an lrregularly shaped openlng 1 1. The web member 9 is preferably made of double thickness and may or may not be reinforced by stitching 15 around the opening 14.
In applying my improved web to a glove,
caught will be effectively held by the. cross members 12 and 13 against any tendency to slip through between the thumb and forefinger. 7
It will thus be seen that the glove is materi ally strengthened at the point most liable to give way in hardusage and its general appearance and efliciencygreatly increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a glove having thumb and fingers formed of front and back portions seamed together, a web having elongated side portions sscured in one adjacent seams of the thumb and forefinger, said web having a pair of spaced integral cross members connecting said side portions.
2. The article of claim 1 in which the web is formed of a single piece of material folded upon itself, the middle portion being cut away and the resultant opening being reinforced by stitching passing the-rearound.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature- CHARLES E. WERLE
