yAn object of the invention is to produce' a strong lockcapable of being easily operated, of a very simple construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock mechanism which is applicable Yto a padlock construction as well as to the ordinary door lock construction; the only difference being that in the case of the padlock Va hasp of the usual form is latched within the lock instead of having a projecting lock bar as is the case with the door lock.

- In the form of .the invention shown inY Figures 1v to 10, the lock consists of an enclosing case 1, rectangular in form, which has the back 2 connected Vthereto byl a series of screws 3 extending into holes 4 to 7 of a shallow flange cast inside thecasing 1. On the front of the casing there is the Vcylinder supporting member 8 which has the flange 9 integral therewith and within which is the key barrel 10. Te key barrel may be of any desired form and is operated b-y the key 11 which has the point 12 to aid in turning the key barrel and the first tumbler 13 which is fastened tothe key barrel; screws 14 and 15 being used for the latter purpose. The tum-A bler 13 has a notch 16 and has a circularv groove 17 extending almost entirely around the same;l thisl groove guides a pin 19 which acts to turn the' next adjoining tumbler and also acts with its beveled surfacel 2O to push the lock bolt out to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 when the beveled surface comes in contact with the beveled surface 21 on the `lug 22. The tumbler 13 is secured to the key barrel 10, but the center tumbler 21 and the back tumbler 24 arel mounted Ona slotted stud 23 securedl to the back by the screw 24. Each ofthe tumbler-s 21 and 24 has a shallow central recess to receive an S shaped spring shown at 25,26
The tumbler 24 has a flat spring 27 secured thereto which allows that tumbler to turn counter' clockwise Fig. 10 without disturbing either of the other tumblers, but ii" turned clockwise it will turn the tumbler 21 when the end of the spring strikes the peripheral notch, and it' turned more than one turn will turn the tumbler 13 as soon as the pin 19 strikes the end ot' the slot 17,
The lock bolt 28 is carried by a rectangular frame 29 which has the lug 22 projecting inwardly and at one end ot' the Jframe there is a hole to receive a spiral spring Which causes the retraction of the bolt frame whenever the openings in the tumblers 13, 21 and 24 are aligned. I'Vhen the tumbler openings are aligned the lock trame will snap back to the unlocked position and it thetumbler 13 is turned countcrclockwise Fig, 6, it will eject the lug 22 because of the beveled surface 21 vand reset the lock. The face of the lock has a suitable dial to facilitate the opening of the lock and operation of the combination.
The padlock shown in Figs. 11 to 18 has the outer shell 40 with the U shaped hasp 4l, the ends of which are slidable in two holes in the casing.
The long leg of the hasp is notched to allow the locking block 42 to prevent the hasp from being pulled ont and to allow it to turn entirely aroundwhen at the outer limit of its movement.
The long leg ot the hasp is drilled to re.- ceive a pin 43 and spiral spring 44 to throw the hasp outwardly when the, tumblers are properly aligned, The short leg of the hasp has a notch 45 to receive the lock member 46 on a flat plate 47. `This plate 47 has a central slot which lits over the slotted pin 48, and it also has vthe lug 49 which is adapted to enter the tumbler slots when they are aliened. This plate 47 is held in place by a t in ywasher or disk 50 having two screw holes, and the spiral spring `50 tends to push said plate lto the unlocked position.
The tumblers are shown at 52, 53 and .54, Figs. 14, 15 and 18 and they are substantially like the tumblers shown and previously described. The slotted stud 48 has the two S shaped wire springs o4', 55 passing there? thru lto steady the movement .Of the two tumblers 52, 53 which correspond to the tumblers 21', 24.
The lock shown in Figs, 11 to 18, has its tumblers arranged the same as the other lock, two being on the stud 48 while the tumbler 54 is secured on the key barrel 56 and turns with it.
The lock barrel 56 is assembled by pushing it into the casing from the right Fig. V13 and it is then secured therein within a shell 56 by the screws which pass through the holes 54 of the tumbler 54; said tumbler being assembled within the casing from the opposite end through the opening illed by the plate 48 which carried the stud 48 and this plate is in turn held in place by a pin 48.
In each case the tumblers are aligned by inserting a key in the barrel and turning the key to carry the tumblers 54 and 53 until their notches are properly aligned, then the key is turned back acting to set the middle tumbler, after which a short reverse turn of theV key sets the tumbler secured to the key barrel, and allows the lug 49 to drop into all the slots by the action of the spring 50 acting on the plate 47 and withdrawing the lock member 46 from the notch 45 in the hasp 4l.
In order to provide means for opening the lock in the darkness or at times when the figures cannot be seen, the ring is used to locate the position of the iigures. This ring has three unequally placed'pins 71, 72, 73, which lit thc holes 74, 75, 76 in the base of the padlock, whereby the ring must al- Ways be placed thereon in a certain position. The ring .then has three spring retracted plugs 78, 7 9, 80, spaced to ,correspond with the location of the combination numerals so that when one wishes to open his padlock all that is needed is to place the ring on the base of the padlock, insert his key, turning it several times in the proper direction, whereupon the first stop is pressed in with the finger until the key is turned to ,contract therewith, thereafter this stop is released and the key is turned in the opposite direction, one or more times as may be required, whereupon the next stop is pushed in and the key turned against the same until it stops, thereupon the key may be turned in the opposite direction for the necessary space, whereupon the third stop will be projected inwardly to L stop the key in the proper position.
lVhat I claim is as follows, but modifications may be made in carrying out the invention shown in the drawings and in the above particularly described form Athereof within the purview of the invention as defined by the annexed Claims- I claim:
1. A key operated combination lock comprising a casing, several flat tumblers there in, each having a peripheral notch, means to operate one of the tumblers with a key, means to ,retract the lock bolt when the tumbler notches are aligned, means to operate one of the tumblers from the key tumbler, a flat spring on another tumbler to operate a third tumbler, and `means on the key tumbler to extend said lock bolt by a reverse Inovement of the key.
2.
