Sept. 21 1926.
. A. L. BERGER SAFETY RAZOR Filed Dec. 30, 1925 WITNESS:
A ra/5m Jean's B rge/- INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented- Sept. 21,1926.
ABRAHAM LEWIS BERGER, OF STEUBENVILLE, OHIO.
- sarn'mr molt.
Application filed December 30, 1925. Serial m, rams.
Anotherob ject of .my invention residing. in
the provision of locking means included upon the holding means and for engagementwith the pivot for the blade holdmeans in order that the same may be .he d
rigidly in opened and closed positions. With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the followv ing novel features and detailsof construction, to be-hereinafted more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing z-- Figure l is an elevation of my invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a diametric plan view of my invention when extended and ready for sharpening or' stropping. Figure 4 is a perspective of the blade per se. Figure 5 is a rear elevation of the invention as completed and set up for use.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates an angularly shaped. plate having one end closed and apertured as indicated at 11 in order that the reduced threaded end of a handle 12 may be selectively positioned and held rigidly with the rear side or end of the plate 10. Arranged .upon the forward side of the plate 10 -is a relatively large blade 13 including a forwardly 0 set portion 14 at an appropriate point. in its height and having its outer side lying flush with the lower edge of the plate 10 while-the lower extremity or edge of the plate 13 defining upwardly extending ears 15 upon its opposite sides and a plurality of cutout portlons 16 arranged therebetween, the latter structure being prevalent in safety razors. vThe upper edge of the plate 13 being upwardly inclined as indicated at 17 While the corresponding side edge extending upwardly and abruptly 'as indicated at 18 with respect to the upper edge 17 and communicating therewith in in order that the said blade the manner as clearly illustrated in Figure 3' of the drawing.
A blade retaining means for the razor proper constituting a plate 19bent upon itself as indicated at 20 and having a pivot .pin 21 extending through one corner thereof for pivotally mounting the plate 19 as a. whole upon the plate 13 in order that thev said plate 19 may be swung upwardly. and outwardly as clearly illustrated in Fi ure 3 of the drawing. The outer ortion o the plate 19 forming an outwar ly extending offset portion 22 while both of the said ends being bent inwardly one toward the other as clearly illustrated as at 23 in Figure 2 of the drawing. A razor blade 24 having a back 25, being substantially wedge-shaped in cross-section and defining shoulder 26 immediate the lower ends of its. luncture with respect to the cutting edge 27 therefor in order that the said back 25, inay be slided between the ends 23 of the plate -19 and the shoulders 26 preventing the blade 24 from riding upwardly within the late 19.
In the foregoing description an accompany drawing it. is clearly apparent. and
man fest that when the blade 24 is mounted within the holder or retaining means, as
defined, the said retaining means with the blade may swing upwardly and outwardly in order that the said blade may be readily sharpened or stropped. The pivot pin 21 having a honzontal slotted portion therein,
the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
A. locking plate 27 having a tongue 28 upon one end'having-selective engagement within the slotted'portion of the pivot pin 21 and including spaced slotted portions 29 therein for the reception of the shanks of headed studs 30 secured within the immediate beht portion 20 of the plate 19 whereby the said locking plate 27' being mounted for sliding movement and for locking the said ;late 19 in the position as described and illustrated.
The blade 24 being relatively heavy and strengthened, similar to that of straight edge razor and capable of being sharpened and stropped in a like manner and consequently one blade of this sort may last indefinitely.
The invention is susceptible of variouswith respect thereto, a backed razor blade conforming to the configuration of the space defined between the ends of the retaining blade and inserted therebetween, means for pivotally mounting the retaining plate upon the relatively large plate, a pivot pin extending within the bent portion of the retaining plate and relatively large plate to permit an upward and outward swinging movement of the retaining plate thereon, and locking means provided upon the bent portion of the retaining plate and engaging the pivot pin substantially as set forth.
4. A safety razor of'the character described comprising an angularly disposed plate having a relatively large plate secured upon its forward side, said relatively large plate having an offset portion lying flush with the lower edge of the angularly disposed plate and providing a pair of upchanges in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the-scope of the ap- 5 pended claims. a
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: v.
1. A safety razor of the character described exposing a blade upon its forward side and being substantially offset and providing upwardly extending ears adjacent its op osite ends, a blade holding plate position'e upon the aforementioned plate, mea'ns for pivotally mounting the blade holding plate to the razor proper to permit an upward and outward swinging movement thereon, and a locking plate carried bythe blade holding plate for engagement with the pivotal mounting for rigidly retaining the latter in a desired position.
2. A safety razor of the character described comprising an angularly disposed plate having a relatively large plate secured plate, a blade retaining plate bent upon itupon its forward side, said relatively large self and having its outer extremity extendplate having an offset portion lying flushing outwardly and inwardly therefrom with the lower edge of the angularly diswhile its remaining end extending in an posed plate and providing a pair of upoppositely disposed relation with respect wardly extending ears adjacent the ends and thereto, a backed razor blade conforming to lower edges thereof, a blade retaining plate the configuration of the space defined bebent upon itself and having its outer extween the ends of the retaining blade and tremity extending outwardly and inwardly inserted therebetween, means for pivotally therefrom while its remaining. end extendmounting the retaining plate upon the relaing inwardly oppositely disposed relation tively large plate, a pivot pin extending with respect thereto, a backed razor blade within the bent portion of the retaining conforming to the configuration of the space plate and relatively large plate to permit an defined between the ends of the retaining upward and outward swinging movement of plate andinserted therebetween, and means the retaining plate thereon, locking means for pivotally mounting the retaining plate provided upon the bent portion of .the reupon the relatively large plate.
40 3. 'A safety razor of the character de scribed comprising an angularly disposed of the retaining plate and relatively large plate having a relatively large plate secured plate and including a horizontal passage u on its forward side, said relatively large within the head therefor, and a locking plate p ate having an offset portion lying flush slidingly mounted upon'the bent portions of with the lower edge of the angularly disthe retaining plate and providing a tongue posed plate and providing a pair of upwardly extending ears adjacent the ends and lower edgesrthereof,.a blade retaining plate bent upon itself and having its outer extremity extending outwardly and inwardly therefrom while its remaining end exten ing in oppositely disposed relation,
ends and lower edges of the relatively large tion within the passages provided within the head of the pivot pm.
In testimony ture.
ABRAHAM LEWIS BERGER.
