JOHN ARTHUR- J 'ONES, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATIOLf LooK.
Application filed August 6,1925. Serial No. 48,669.
My invention relates to and has for its purpose the provision of a combination lock which is extremely simple in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and capable of a relatively large number of combinations pos-' sible, its structural simplicity permitting of a wide and general use of the invention, particularly as a substitute forinexpensive'key locks. 1 I
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the lock, with portions in elevation, and illustrating the extended position of the. locking element'with relation to a keeper; 1 g Figure. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1, illustrating the bolt in extended position; a f a Figure 3 isa similar view illustrating the boltinretracted position; 1 I Figure 4 is a perspective view ofone of the permutation locking members; Figure5 is a similar view of one of the separating members; I I
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective View of the operating shaft, illustrating the shoulders. Referring specifically to the drawings, in
i which similar reference characters refer, to
similar parts, my. invention, in its. present embodiment, comprises 'a hollow casinglO in the open end of. which is positioned a block 11, formed-.with-a central opening 12 adapted for the reception of a series of permutation members 13 and spacing disks 14, the latter being held in fixed position within the block 11, by means of peripheral lugs 15, which seat in a recess 16 of the block.
The spacing disks 14 are interposed be tween the confronting surfaces of'the permutation members 13 and are formed with peripheral slots 17', which are adapted for registration with similar slots 18 formed on the permutation members.
A shaft 19 carries a graduated dial 20 and an operating knob 21, and the shaft extends through anopening in the closure 22 and casing 10 and likewise passes through cir' cular openings 23 and 24 of the permutation members 13 and the disks 14. 'This shaft intermediate its ends is reduced as at 24 to form two oppositely disposed series of shoulders 25, 26 and..27, which progress step like formation circnmferentiallj of the shaft in a spiral direction, and is held in position by a nut 28 disposed on the screw threaded end 29 thereof. The permutation members 13 are'formed with lugs 30 which project within thecen tral openings 23 and each of said lugs is adapted to seat upon the shaft shoulders '25 26 and 27 of the series in the order of their assembly upon said shaft 19, when the lat-. ter is actuated in either direction tobring the permutation slots 18 in registration with the fixedly disposedslots 17 of the spacing disks 14. I v
Dial 20 has imprinted thereon a series of consecutively arranged number or letter designations, and in order to provide a given combination, certain of the letters or numbers are associated with a particular shaft shoulder. Forexample, if the combination is B, R and E, therevolution of the shaft 19 in one direction will bring the firstcombination designation in'registration with a pointer (not illustrated) and will cause the lug- 30 of the first permutation member to engage with and seat upon the first shaft shoulder 25 of one series, which action brings the, slot 18; of the said permutation member into registration with the slot 17 of the first spacing disk 14. Then the shaft is revolved in the opposite direction to center. the dial designation R, which causes the 'A bo1t 31 is slidablyimountediin the op posite end of casing .10, and has one end reduced to form a blade portion 32 'adapted for reception within a slot 33 arranged in the inner end of block 11, and which communicates with the central opening 12. v The major portion of the bolt propeuis provided with a longitudinal bore 34in which is slidably mounted a latch 35' adapted for engagement with a closure hasp or the like. Adjacent itsouter the s formed that the latch 35 is normally projected outwardly through an opening in the casing to operative or looking position.
The bolt may be retracted, when the spacing disk and permutation slots 17 and 18 are in registration with slot 33 of the block 11, by means of ahead 41 mounted upon a pin 41 seated in the bolt 31. The pin 41 is operable in the registering slots 42 and 43 of the casing and closure 22, respectively.
When the dial 20 has been moved to center the prescribed combination designations, the permutation. member slots 18 are successively brought into registration with the spacing disk slots 17 and the slot 33 of the block 11, so that the blade portion 32 of the bolt may be moved into the slots 17 and 18, to retract the bolt and latch 35.
If the lock is attached to a' door, the bolt may be retracted from the inside by pressing the exposed end of latch 35 inwardly until free of the flange t l which it normally engages.
It is obvious that any number of permutation members may be added to increase the number of operations necessary to open the lock, and a greater number of progressively disposed shoulders may be provided upon the operating shaft.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form, of combination lock embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a combination lock, the'combination with a casing, ofa shaft operable in said casing and having a dial provided with character designations and an operating knob, a series of permutation members mounted on said shaft, a block in said casdisks fixedly disposed between said permutation members and having slots provided thereon, lugs on said permutation members, radially disposed shoulders formed on said shaft, said permutation members and spacing disks having circumferentially disposed slots, certain of thedial character designations indlcating the position of the permucasing and having a dial provided with character designations and an operating knob, a series of a permutation members mounted on said shaft, a block disposed in said casing adapted for the reception of said permutation members and provided with a slot, a bolt operable in said casing and having normal engagement with said permutation members, a spring normally holding said bolt in looking position with said members, spacing disks fixedly disposed between said permutation. members, lugs arranged on said permutation members, ra-
dially disposed shoulders formed on said shaft, said permutation members and spacing disks provided with circumferential slots, certain of the dial character designations indicating the successive lugs on said permutation members to be engaged by the shaft shoulders, when the shaft is actuated to bring the permutation and spacing mem ber slots into registration, and a member. for retracting said bolt into said slot-s.
3. A combination lock, the combination with a casing, a block disposed within said casing and having'a slot formed therein, a .shaft extending throughsaid casing, a series of permutation members loosely mounted on saidshaft and arranged within the block opening, lugs and slots provided on said permutation members, spacing disks interposed between said permutation members and being fixedly held in said block opening, said spacing disks formed with circumferential slots, said shafthaving a portioncut away to form a series of oppositely disposed shouldersextending in radial plane co-axially thereof, a bolt operable in said casmg, a 7
spring normally urging said bolt to operative position, a dial and operating knob on said shaft, character designations on said dial, the lugs of said permutation members adapted to seat on the successive shaft shoulders when the shaft is. revolved, and certain of the character designations indicating a shoulder to be brought into engagement with the permutation member lugs, to
cause the permutation slots to register with the other mentioned slots whereby the bolt may be retracted therein.
4. A combination lock, the combination with a casing, of a. block disposed within said casing and provided with'an opening, and slot, a shaft extending through said casing and having a dial and operating knob disposed thereon, a series of permutation members mounted on said'shaft and operable within the said block opening, spacing disks interposed between saidpermutation members and fixedly held in the block opening, lugs and slots formed on said permutation members and spacing elements, radially disposed shoulders on said shaft, a bolt operable in said casing, a latch associated with said bolt, a spring surrounding said shaft and tensioning the same to locked position, the shaft adapted for actuation to seat the permutation lug-s on the shoulders thereof,
block slots, said bolt having a reduced por-" tion adapted for reception within said slots,
certain of said .dial characters indicating o a shaft shoulder to be engaged by a permutation member lug when the shaft is turned, and an element arranged on said bolt for retracting the same when the reduced portion is in registry with the slots of said permutation member and spacing disks.
