PQWER CONTROLLING MEANS.
' Application fiied'i/rarch 22, 19:24; Seria1'No. 701,019.
Machines for use in preparing warps for looms usually have their, reels driven by means which is controlled by a treadle which the operator holds depressed with his foot when the reel is'to be driven, removal of his foot from the treadle resulting in cutting off the power and consequently the stopping of the rotation of the reel. While the occasions for stopping the reel occur more or less frequently, nevertheless it is fatiguing to the attendant to be required to hold the treadle depressed for keeping the reel rotating, and the object of this invention is therefore to provide a locking means which may be used to lock the treadle depressed but which the attendant can instantaneously causeto release the treadle by a simple pressure of his foot on the latter. It will be understood that the invention as herein set forth is applicable to any power controlling element (whether for a warping or any other machine) which is movable back and forth and normallyurged in one direction.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing shows the invention applied to a warping machine, shown in side elevation; Fig. 2 shows in solid outline the positions of the parts concerned in the invention when the power controlling member is fully retracted, and in dotted outline their positions when said member is locked in the advanced position, as for applying the power;
Fig. 3 shows positions the parts may assume, as in the act of unlocking said member; and V Fig. 4: is a plan of said parts.
Let a designate the power-controlling member, being here a lever which is fulcrumed in the frame 6 of a warping machine and is normally held elevated by a spring 0 connecting the frame with a treadle (Z, in
turn connected with said member by the link 6. WVhen it is so held elevated the lever allows a suitably driven friction wheel 7 to fall clear of the driving band 9 of the warping machine reel g, so that the rotation of the reel is stopped in the usual way by a brake-band h; when the lever is depressed by depressing the treadle the friction-wheel is returned into contact with said driving band and rotates the reel.
2' is a member with reference to which the member a is movable. In the present case 'it is a plate formed with two arms which are secured by bolts 7' to an upright of the frame, standing in a vertical plane close beside the member a. The construction of this plate will be later set forth. 7
On the member a is a locking pawl 7c pivoted in the member a to move in a vertical plane and for urging it against the member 2' it is prolonged, as at 70, so that its'prolonged portion forms in effect a weight. The acting end of the device is, that is, the end thereof which is normally urged against member 71, is a lateral toe Z0 The surface of the memberz' against which the lateral toe k of device 70 bears is afforded by a vertical edge thereof, This edge has a notch Z. The upper sidelcf this notch affords a positive stop; the opposite side Z is coactive with the locking device camfashion, as byrounding it, as shown (or the toe of the locking device may have a camface at 70 or, as shown, both these expedients may be resorted to).
To look the member. a in depressed position (Fig. 2, dotted'outline) it is depressed by pressure on the treadle until the locking device engagesin the notch. To unlock member a itis depressed and quickly released (Fig. 3), the depressing bringing into play the camming coaction as between member z and the locking device at Z 7c and the ensuing upward movement of the lock- 7 ing device with member. a causing the former to jump the notch and thus clear its locking side Z. I
To insure the locking device thus clearing the notch I elevate the side Z of the notch relatively to the side Z, which may be accomplished by forming the portions i i of the surface of member 2' against which the locking device bears so that the former of f these portions is elevated relatively to the other.
While I have shown the locking device on the member a and the notch in member 6, it is obvious that a reversal of this arrangement is within the spirit of my invention.
' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is V In combination, an upright'fixed member, a controlling member movable up and down beside the fixed member and normally urged upwardly, and a pawl and a plate arranged sideby side and between said members. said plate being fixed to one member and the pawl being pivoted to the other member to move in a vertical plane and having a lateral toe and being weighted and thereby held with its toe bearing against an upright edge of the plate, and said edge of the plate having a locking notch to receive the toe of the pawl in one position of the controlling member and affording at one side thereof a positive stop to the movementof the controlling member in the direction in Which 1 when the controlling member is moved in 15 v the other direction. 1 V
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature GEORGE ADSIT.
