FEED-CONTROLLING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Dames WV. SIIoLLnN- nnnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at ltlontgomery, county of Lyconnng, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Feed-Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines having a feeding apparatus which it is required to stop and start frequently, and it consists more especially in a method of applying a binder pulley to a feed belt and automatically locking the binder in working position, and also in unlocking it when required, by the same hand lever that operates the binder.
In the drawings accompanying this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of my 111 vention shown applied to the frame of a woodworking machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of'the essential parts. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the same, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation at a right angle to Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the locking segment.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, indicates a machine frame of any required design, on which a driving counter-shaft B is boxed. I
C is a feed pulley mounted on a cross shaft 2 through which the feed mechanism of the machine is operated.
D is a driving pulley on the coimtershaft B, from which the belt 3 and feed pulley C are driven.
t is a binder pulley revolving on suitable hearings on an arm 5, which is supported on a rock shaft E having bearings on the main frame A.
6 is a hand lever which is used to manipulate the binder and thereby stop and start the feed shaft 2 at will, and 7 is a corresponding lever located at or near the rear end of the machine and connected by a link 8 through a rock shaft 30 to an arm on the shaft E, whereby the control of the feed can be had at two points.
The above description relates to old and well known mechanism for operating the feed works of machines of various types.
My invention relates to improvements hereinafter described.

shaft E. To this sleeve is also secured a triangular arm 11 which is located eontiguously to a segment 12 which in turn is rigidly attached to the main frame A. At the center of this segment the shaft E has a bearing and therefore the triangular arm 11 swings concentrically therewith. One or more notches 15-3, Fig. 2, are cut in the periphery of the segment and a pawl 14 drops by gravity or otherwise into them. The pawl 14; is pivoted at 35 to the arm 11 and is therefore controlled by it. A spiral spring 15 is made to encircle the sleeve 10 at a point next to the triangular arm 11 and one projecting end 17 of this spring is bent to engage the cdge of the said arm, while the other end 18 hooks under the edge of the cross girt 16 of the main frame. Thus the spring 15 acts to lift the binder 4: from the feed belt through the arm 11 and sleeve 10, after the pawl 14; is unlocked as further described.
20 is a cam arm secured rigidly to the extremity of the rock shaft It and therefore moves simultaneously with the hand lever 6. On this cam arm is a rounded projection 21 which acts on a lug or pin 22 secured to the pawl 141-. \Vhen, therefore, the rock shaft l) is oscillated by the hand lever (3, the cam 21 lifts the pawl out of the notch 13 and permits the triangular arm 11 to swing free, the spring 15 thus coming into action on the arm 5 and lifting the binder from the belt.
For the purpose of limiting the free movement of the triangular arm 11, a slot 23, Figs. 2, 3 and 5, is cut through the segment 12 concentrically with the rock shaft 1*], and three pins or lugs 24-, 25, 26 pass freely through the slot: Lugs 2 1 and 25 are secured to the cam arm 20, and the central lug 26 is secured to the triangular arm 11. There is a clearance space between lugs 2 and 25 sufficient to permit the lever (3 to be moved over in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, before lug 25 comes in contact with 26, and thereby the pawl 14 is lifted by means of the cam 21 This unlocks the binder, and the spring 1.5 being in tension lifts the binder and stops the feed shaft 2, by relieving the strain on the belt. hen it is desired to throw on the binder fl; and start the feed works, lever 6 is pulled in the direction opposite the arrow, Fig. 2, thus forcing lug 24L against 26, and pushing the triangular of "the spring 15 when the binder to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

It will be seen'that bynieans of the subsidiary lever 7 and the connecting link 8,
which latter is jointed to the cam arm 20 and to the lever, or to an arm on a rock shaft 30 common to both, that the same control of the binder arm 5 is available at the rear or at'any convenient point on the machine frame, as is bad throughthe lever pressure-of-the binder pulley on the belt, but also serves to keep lug 26 in contact with lug 24: when the pawl 14 is lifted by the movement of cam 21.

3. In a feed controlling device, a feed belt,
'abinder pulley operating thereon, a binder arm carrying the pulley at one extremity and pivotedupon a-roc-kshaft at the other, a controlling lever fast to said rock shaft, a coiled spring encircling the rock shaft and actingtolift-the binder pulley from the belt, a notched segment concentric with the rock shaft, a :pawl and supporting means therefor, and means for locking and unlocking the pawl from the notched segment for the purposes set forth.
4. In a feed controlling device, a feed belt,

5. In a feed controlling device a "feed belt, a binder pulley operatingthereon and a pivoted supporting arm,-a rock shaft anda controlling lever fast thereto, a notched segment concentric to the rock shaft, a locking pawl, a pawl supporting armconnecteddirectly to the binder arm, a pawl lifting arm fast uponthe rock shaft, whereby the operator is enabled 'to start the feed works, lock the binder .pulley .in working position, unlock the same and liftthe pulley 'fromthefeed belt'by the-use of one controlling lever.
6. "Ina feed controllingdevice'a feed belt, 'a pivoted binderarm and its pulley, a rock shaft and a controlling lever fastthereto, a notched segment concentric to said rock shaft, 'a lockingpawl and its supporting-arm 1 pivoted upon the rock shaft, said pawl arm having a lug thereon, a pawl lifting arm "fast to the rock shaft, said lifting arm having lugs acting in conjunction with the lug on the pawl arm whereby a movement of the controlling leverfirst unlocks the-pawl from the notch in the segment and then may lift the binder pulley and stop the feed.
