LoCOMoTIvE-FRONTLEND SUPPORT.
i Application led September 25, 1920. Serial No. 412,650.
y a support for the type of closure used in locomotive-boilers and commonly termed the front end plate, and has special reference to the provision of a support adapt-ed to permit the end closure being removed and.,
access swung to one side in order to afford to the boiler. v l
The end closure plate for the front end of a boiler shell is large and extremely heavy and is securedto the front of the bo-iler shell by a great number of stud-bolts and nuts circumferentially adjacent to the outer edge of the front plate. T o causethe front end plate to seat tightly on the front of the boiler shell, the nuts .are turned up as far Vas practicable and when it isdesired to remove the front end plate from the boiler shell to afford access to the interior oftheboiler, the nuts are all removed and the .fronty yend plate is moved bodily away from the boiler shell front and out of contact with the studbolts. plate have a tendency to stick and then separation is rendered somewhat difficult.A Inv the removal of the front end plateto a position where it is no longer Supported by the stud-bolts some Such means as a crane -or other tackle has been found necessary to carry the weight of the-front end plate and this in turn has necessitated that the end'plate be removedat a vpoint where the necessary apparatus is available. l
The principal Objects' of my present invention are the provision of improvedmeans for supporting the fron-tl end plate fromthe engine, when detached from the boiler, andso supporting it that it may be readily re-4 atively connectible tothe closure memberr for permitting saidA closure member generally to bemoved away from the boiler opening and moreparticularly to be moved to the side of the opening; the provision ofk a port,- able support for the `purpose referred to adapted for rapid` attachment and detach-y ment/,the provision in a boiler havinga re-Y movable closure member of animproved arA The parts associated with :the end,v
i cated by the arrows; and.
rangement of brackets adapted to receivev a detachable supporting member for movably carrying the closure member; thel provision of 'an improved supporting v,device PATENT HARRY vIsSERING, OF KENILWORTH, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR To THE oKAnEnfCOM--' adapted to permit theremoval ofthe clo-.-f
sure member with a minimum of strain; to-VV gether with such further and-additional fobr sure plate and provided with -my improved: detachable support shown in position to permity the removal o-f the end plate;
Figure 2 isaside elevational view of the shown as removed from the boiler front and swung boiler;
Figure 3 is zontal section, ytaken on the line 3f-,3 o-fV Figure 2 and looking in the direction indi'-vr tO one side. to permit access to the Figure 4 isa .fragmentary lateral elevational view, partlyin section, viewing Va por-` tion of the structure of Figure v1. 1
Referring first to Figure 1'and- 2 of the i drawings, lit will be observed that I have way locomotiveboiler,10,having an openmg end ynormally closed by a frontend closure plate, 11. Theen'd plate, 11, 4is normallyy supported againsty the front end ofthe boiler by a circular row of *stud-bolts, 12,. passing througha registering series ofrapertures, 13, in the' end plate 11. These stud-bolts, 12', are screw-threaded tov receive nuts,;14, byv
vures`2 and 3 of the drawings,fit will v,be seen that 1 have provided ion the .periphery of a plan view-, f partly inV horif here indicatedl aconventionalj formr o f4 rail-' @means of which the end plate, 11,1inaybe Y the boiler a suitable bracket construction which preferably icludes a pair of spaced members 15, 15, having laterally proyecting portions 16, 16aM with forward extensions .unitary detachable supporting structure and 17, 17 EL'and bifurcated terminals 18, 18,a such terminals being apertured toreceive. a hinge pintle 19, 19t.
Nithin the bifurcations 18, 1.8EL detachab'ly rest the hinge elements 20, 2()a apertured for the passage of the pins 19, 19a, the Y parts 20, 20L being secured to the supporting'pedestal 21 kconveniently formed fromy an I-beam.
For connecting the pedestal, 21, to the front end, 11, there is secured to the upper end of the pedestal` a transverse beam, 22, fo-rmed of parallel .channel members, one end of which beam is secured by a tension rod, 23, to abracket, 24, at the lower end of the pedestal, 21,'thus yforming a truss.
'F or `afl'ording detachable connection between the beam, 22, and the; end plate, 11, I-employ abracket, 25, fixed centrally toV the` upper part of the end plate, such bracket, 25, having afbifurcat'ed portion, 26, adapted to detachably receive a suspension member, 27, which may be secured theretofby a'removable hinge pintle 28%. l
The suspension member, 27. is loosely carried at the outer free end of the .beam,22,
. being suspendedv therefrom by means ofthe vnut,28, engaging av threaded'portion of the suspension member.
In the ordinary use of aflocomotive, orv
other structure embodying my `present Iin'- vention, lonly Athe bracket 15, y15"L,"and 25 are carried by the boiler assembly, the end plate being supported inthe customary manner by the stud-bolts, 12, and nuts 14. i
When, however, lit is desired to remove the end plate, 11, from support by the studbolts, 12, the nuts, 14, beingV removed, the detachable supporting structure including the principal elements 21, 22, 23 and 24, forming afportablevunit, as follows: the hinge members, 20, 20a, are brought into registry with 'the .openings in the bifurcations 18, 18a and thel pintles, 19, 19EL are inserted in position. Then the structure is so positioned as to bring the lowerend of the suspension rod, 27 intoV registry with the openings in the bifurcations, 26, and the pintle 28a is inserted into-position;
Referring'now more particularly to Figures land 4 of ,the drawinigs,`it will bev perceived that any desired .tension may be placed upon the tension member, 23, by vturning the` nut, 29, upon the upper lscrewthreaded end ofthe tension rod, 23, disposed between the two webs ofthe composite channel beam 22, which nut bears against the chamfered face, 30, of the abutment block. 31, extending upwardly from ythe vwebs yof the parallel channels.V y i" 1 TheV suspension rod,'27, is carried from the composite channel beam, 22, by being passed loosely through an abutment block..
32, against which the nut, v28, bears.
Having, as above. stated, installed the of the stud-bolts, 12, without vunduly krenlarging the apertures in the end plate, .11, through Swhich said stud-bolts pass. n
rhis separation `of the end plate, 11,f.rom the-front of the boiler, 10, Ais .facilitated'by the. factv that as above set forth the plate, 11,'is connected for so.called universal movement relatively to the beam, 22, .by virtue ofthe pivotal connections involved `in the use ofthe pintle, 28, and the Vloose support bythe nut, 28. A
of thestud-bolts, 172, particularly in case the plate has gravitated downwardly, for
instance by vdeflection-ofthe beam, 22, comin combination, a Ypivoted supporting memhould the end plate,v 11, .catch onv 4anyl ber, av crane member secured at an angle thereto'at an intermediate point of said crane member, and means for tensioning onev end of said crane member.
3. In a device of the character described,
in combination, a pivoted supporting pedestalfmember, and a crane vmember secured at an intermediate point at an angle thereto, and a tension vmember connecting one end of said crane member and said pedestal.
4. In a device ofthe character-described, in combination, abase member, a pedestal member pivoted thereto at a plurality `of spaced points, a transverse member carried by said pedestal member, rand a pivoted transverse member.
pendant supporting member carried'by ,saidV CII 5. In combination, va locomotive boiler having an opening and a removable front plate therefor, a fixed supportJ on the boiler adjacent to said front closure plate and having a portion extending forwardly thereof, a crane vertically pivotally mounted upon said support and having a laterally extending portion overlying the closure plate, and a vertically disposed suspending member on the extending portion of said crane, and a horizontal pivot parallel to the face of the closure for connecting the closure plate .and said suspending member.
6. In combination, a locomotive boiler having an opening and a removable front closure plate therefor, a fixed support on the boiler adjacent to said closure plate, a crane vertically pivotally mounted upon said support and having Va laterally extending portion overlying the closurepla'te, connecting means between said closure plate and laterally extending portion, said connecting means permitting movement of the plate about a horizontal axis parallel thereto but preventing substantial bodily moves ment of the plate laterally of said connecting means.
7. In combination, a locomotive boiler having an opening therein, a front closure plate for said opening, a bracket on the boilerv adjacent to said opening, a crane-like' structure pivotally mounted upon lsaid bracket and overlying said closure plate, a depending vertically adjustable rigid member carried by said crane-like structure, and
a pivot connection between the depending ,l
means for rotatably supporting said closure member for movement about angularly related axes relatively to said opening including a depending member rotatable 'about a vertical axis, said means also Vincluding a connection between said depending member and the closure comprising a pivot angularly related to said depending member and parallel to the face of said closure plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
