At opposite sides of the notch 23, projecting inwardly from the bracket, are one or more lugs 24 adapted to engage with the shoulders 25 formed at the extreme end of the burner at the juncture of the hook member 22. It will be apparent that when the end of the burner is seated in the notch 23, it is incapable of longitudinal movement in either direction.
Adjacent the apertures 20 in the side wall 12 near the opposite or inner ends of the burners, I provide upon each of the burners a projection in the form of a radially extending stud 26 which is adapted to engage with the inner side of the wall 12 so as to hold the burner from moving relative thereto and at the same time holding the Wall from bulging inwardly when expanded under the action of heat. It will be apparent that the burners thus serve as stays to reinforce the oven section, preventing the side walls from'warping and thus producing a disagreeable noise.
Each of the apertures 20, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, is enlarged in one or more points as at 27 so as to pass the projections formed by the hook members 22, the stud 26, and a plurality of "lugs 28. The latter extend radially from the burners and serve to position properly upon the burners a lighter manifold 29. Normally, the enlargements 2'? are located out of the way of said. projections so that it is necessary before removing the burners to turn them to carry the respective projections into alinement with the enlarged portions 27 of the apertures. Preferably the edges of the apertures 20 are rounded or beaded as shown clearly in Fig. 5, so as to facilitate the operation of sliding the burners through the inner side wall in assembling or disassembling the parts.
The forward ends of the burners are, as above mentioned, detachably connected with the gas cocks 16 on the front manifold 13 through the nozzles 15 entering the mixing bowls 14 of the burners. W hen it is desired to remove the burners from the oven section I simply disengage the manifold from the bracket 18 adj acent the free end ofthe manifold and swing the latter outwardly sufficient to disengage the nozzles of the gas cocks from the mixing bowls. This outwardl swinging movement of the free end of the manifold is so slight that the movement is taken up in the piping without in any way injuring or breaking the joints. To permit of the disengagement of the manifold from the bracket 18 the latter preferably comprises a main or lower portion 30 secured at one end to the underside of the top frame 8 by means of a bolt 31 and hav- -ing at its opposite end a socket portion 32 in which the manifold is arranged to rest.
A cap member 33 is then secured upon the lower or main member 30 as by means of a bolt 34. The side edges of the member 30 are flanged downwardly so as to lend strength to the bracket and the same is true of the cap member 33. In practice it is only necessary to remove the bolt 34 and the cap member 33, and loosen the bolt 31 slightly, to permit of the disengagement of the manifold from the bracket.
It will be apparent that the method here in disclosed of supportingv the oven section is exceedingly simple. A single operation forms the apertures through which the burners pass, and the studs 26 coacting with the edges of these apertures normally to hold the burners against relative movement therein, are preferably cast integral with the burners. Consequently, the usually required plates or supporting brackets for support-- ing the burners in this wall of the oven section are eliminated. Furthermore, the burners may be readily removed when desired by simply disconnecting the manifold therefrom in the manner set forth.
I claim as my invention:
1. A gas range having, in combination, an open top section and an oven section having its inner wall adjacent the open top section and having an aperture therein near the plane of the open top section, a burner for the oven section including a substantially straight main portion adapted to be inserted into the oven through said aperture and to fit snugly therein so as to be held against lateral movement in the aperture, the outer side wall of the oven section having a part rigid therewith with which the opposite or free end of said burner portion is'detaehably connected, said burner also including a portion extending forwardly from the main portion upon the outside of the oven but beneath the open top section, and a gas manifold extending along the front of the open top section and having a detachable connection with said burner, said manifold being adapted to be swung outwardly away from the open top section whereby to disengage it from the burner.
2. In a gas range having an open top section and an oven section, an oven burner, a gas manifold with which said even burner has a detachable connection, one wall of the oven section having a hole therein of a size substantially equal to the diameter of the burner and through which the burner is arranged to pass, and a projection on the burner adapted to engage with the edge of the aperture so as normally to prevent longitudinal movement of the burner, said aperture having an enlargement with respect to which said projection is normally offset but adapted to receive the projection to permit of the movement of the burner in the aperture.
3. A gas range having an oven with 0pposed side walls, a burner for the oven, means upon one of said side walls for supporting one end of the burner, the opposite side Wall having an aperture therein adapted snugly to receive the burner. and having an enlargement, said burner having a projection normally offset with respect to said enlargement to engage the side wall at the edge of the aperture to prevent an inward bulging of said side wall.
4:. In a gas range, an oven having opposed side walls and a burner, said burner being mounted atone end so as to contact with one of said opposed side Walls at the inner side thereof and adapted to engage with the other one of said walls whereby the burner is supported in position in the oven and serves as a stay to prevent the side walls from bulging inwardly.
