v MOLD! i l Application filedl February 26d, 125.926.Y Serial 1\1'o.v90,721.l
This invention relates to improvements in or connected with molds, more particularly` As is well known, the anatomical portions etv such models are usually provided, tor convenience in storing `and handling,` Vwith Vart portions, and heretofore considerable` 10 time and labor have been expended in so doing, the major portion of the work at least having hereto-fore been carried out by hand, particularly thatof trimming whereby that `art portion attached tothe lower anatomical l5 specimen is iinishedyto matchthatof the upper anatomical specimen and-,vice versa.
Y New the primary object oi' the ,present in-V vention is to provide lmeans whereby practi-V cally all of the work is accomplished Vby a simple molding operation, thus reducingthe time and labor heretofore expended thereon, reducing the cost oit production, and resulting in the obtainment ot accurately defined and matching lower and upper art portions for the lower and upper anatomical portions ofthe record model.
' Further ob] said mold;
Fig. 5 is a side view of adetail of coinI struction; i Y
VFie'. 4 is a plan view, partly in section.` ofr 6 is a perspectiveiview ol part ot the mold illustrating/a step in the process of producing a recordlniodel'; and,
Fig. isa similar view -to 4Fig. 6 showing a further step in such process.
v Referring first of fallgmore particularly vto Figure 1,10 indicatesthe lowerl anatomical.' portion 'Otan (orthodontic record model, ii "the artportion cast integral therewith,
ects of the invention will ap-y pear from vthe following description in` nanying drawings, which illustrate the pre-V 12 the upper anatomical portion andvl4 the artportion thereof. v
Now the mold for-providing the anatomi-V cal portions l0 and l2 with the art portions l1 and 14 respectively comprises, as shown in the remaining .iguresl of the drawings, a base plate, 20, which may be ofany desirable shape, to which isfattached an upright mem- -ber or back 22 provided with a slot 24 in which is adapted to work an adjustable stop 26 (see Fig. 3) cooperating with a scale 28 marked or ailixed to the rear face of the back 22. Saidslot is also adapted to re? ceive and guide a sliding plane serving the purpose hereinafterde'scribed, and comprising afront vertically-disposed member 32 adapted to movev over the iront face ot the back 22, a'second vertically-'disposed inem-V ber 34 adapted to work over the rear tace of said back and lspaced `from the k member 32 bypins 36 or their equivalent, and a horizontally disposed member or component 38 integral with` the said member-82.
Adapted to rest*` on the base plate 2O with its inner ends in contact with the iront face of the back 22 ,is an art portion shaping or deiining member 4() adapted to receive and confine-the plastic material used tp form the art portions for the anatomical specimens.y
Said Amember 40, it is to be noted,is providedatfopposite sides `with vertically-extending wings or guides 42, the-purpose-of which willbehereinafterexplained.y
To retain lthe shaping member 40"`irmly in position with relation to the'base 2()` and back 22 of thelmold thereisprovided a spring clamping member 44 having a plurality of inturned lugs orprojections 46 i adapted'to engage theside edges of the back 22 and lock the ineinber 40 in placefsuch 95 flocking being facilitated byproviding the front wall` of clamping member 44 with 'an indented portion. 48 which contacts with the shapingi-memberl 40 and presses it against the back 22 of the mold. Y
AThe use of the mold `for the production of orthodontic record" vmodels may [be described asiollowsz. f j l 1 v :The particular pairV of anatomical `specimens ,(lowerandupper) which areto be prov1.05 vided with art portions having been selected, kthe;heigijht of onek of them is .measured and to ythis vmeasurement Y is added the desired height of the art portion to be cast integral therewith. Suppose, for example, the height U0 ioo Y LII.
Cil
of the said anatomical specimen proves to be inQand it is desired to provide it with an art portion of l/i in., then the stop 26 on the baclr 22 ot' the mold is adjusted and set at the .niark on thesgale 28 giving the sum or' such figures, namely, 1 in.: The space delined by the member Ll() and said back 22 is then filled with plastic material (see Fig. 6) and the anatomical specimen (let us say for convenience that it is the lower specimen l0 ot Fie" 1) is centrally disposed thereon. The slidingplane is neXt'invsorted into the slop 2l and moved in a downward direction until the three lateral extensions 52 ot' its horizontal component 38 Contact with the .upper .edges of the teeth of said specimen 10.' Pressure is then-exerted on 'said component to gradually torce the specimen 10 into the plastic material 50 and this pressure is continued ,until the further downward movement of the plane is arrested by the stop. 26, which means ot' course that the height from the upper edge of the anatomical specimen 1.0 to the botdtom of the .now integral art base 11 will measure the predetermined distance ot' l in. The Vsliding` plane can then bc removed from the slot 24. A f
After the plastic material has hardened, the claifnping memberrrli-l and the shapedelining member 4l() are removed thus com# pleting the `first lower) halt ot the desired record model.
The upper anatomical specimen 1ZVhas next to be furnished with its art portion 14,. To accomplish this it is placed in vocclusion with the completedlowerhalif of the record model and the distance from the lower edge of the art portion v11 to the upper edggeot said specimen Vl2 is measured. To the measurement so obtained isadded the width of the desired. upper art portion 1d and the stop 26 isthen set at the totaldistance` resulting. The shapingV member 40 and the clan'igiing' member i4 are then resecured in position; on the base 20, the spare defined by the said member l() and the baci-r :22 ot' the mold is 4filled with plastic ina- ,erial as betere and thayupper anatomical specimen 12 to Vwhich an art portion now to be attached is placed thereon, with the already completed lower anatomie-a1 specimen 10 and integral art portion 11 thereabove and in occlusion therewith iaswill be clear from Figff The 'sliding' plane is now'insert-ed in the slot 9A: and moved down until its horizontal component 38 contacts with the now upper surface of the lowerart portion 11. Bressure isthen exerted on the component 38, thus forcing the specimen' 12 down into the plasticmaterial therebeneath,
and this until thefurther downward'movel vnient ofthe plane is aijrrested by itscontaot n tli .theistop' 25. willv be seenfthat the verticalllyLdi'sposed wings a2 serveV as guides for the art portion 11 in its downward movement.
The plastic material is allowed to dry when the completed record model can be removed i'rom the mold.
It will be realized that the art portions with which the upper and lower anatomical specimens 1() and l2 are respectively provided kby the ope-rations hereinbefore mentioned are an exact match in all respects, this .in turn resulting' in Athe`production or a balanced and artistic record model. The shape of suchV art portions can, of course, be varied within wide limits; that shownis very popular in theorthodontic profession today and has accordingly been selected as a convenient example only. Consequently the deiining member il() islcapable of variation that each shaping member can be held lirmly i' in place during themolding operation.
It will furthermore be noted that the shape of the front of the lower art portion 11 dif Jr'erstrom thator" the upper portion 14, the formerbeingrounded and the latter pointed (see Fig. 1). As the two art portions are .castin the same mold, it is or" course nece.
sary where it is desired to obtain this ditference in contour, lto introduce into the mold a shape diiierentiating member prior to the casting one of said art portions. The dei-ining member l0 shown in the drawings is provided with a rounded front wall: this can therefore be utilized torthe formation ot' the lower art portion 11. For the, formation of the upper port-ion 14 themember oel shown in Figi 5 should therefore be attached to the inside of the front wall of the member 10 as shownl in Fig. 7, its pins 56 retaining` it in position as will be understood without turther description.
As hereinbetore indicated, the mold herein described although pimarily intended for the production of orthodontic record models can nevertheless be`V used for the molding ot' articles of various kinds, and it is theretore to be understood that the preceding1 description is tobe regarded as explanatory,
and not limitative asfto the' various industries to which the'invention is capable of application; l
