This invention relates to improvements in stanchions.
It is one of the objects'of the present invention to provide a'stanchion of channel provide a stanchion having simple and effective stop means for limiting the opening movement of the stanchion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion equipped with novel,
- accessible and easily operated releasable latch means for retaining the stanchion 1nclosed position.
A'further object of the invention-is to provide a stanchion adjustable to 'vary its width in closed or latched position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion which is of very simple construction, is strong and durable, is re latively inexpensive to manufacture and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view. the invention consists of the improved stanchion and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will appear that the numeral 15 indicates one side member or arm of the improved stanchion, and the numeral 16 in dicates the other vertical arm thereof, both being formed of channel iron with the channel turned outwardly. V
The arm 15 is bent at right angles medially, as at 17, to form an elongated vertical or top bar 18. A complementary vertical or top bar 19 is bolted to the upper end portion of the side arm 16, and said bar 19' is of bifurcated form and arranged for sliding engagement with the bar portion 18. The outer end portion of the bar 19 is raised, as at 20, to contact with an upstanding lug or stop 21 bolted to theouter end portion of the bar 18, to limit the outward movement of the bars 18 and 19 with respect to each other.
The lower end portions of the arms 15 and 16 are adjustably and hingedly connected together to permit opening and closing of the arms with respect to each other. To this end, shoes 22 are bolted into the channels of the lower end portions of each arm and the adjacent ends of the shoes are forked, as shown in 9, and held together by a pivot bolt 23. To adjustably secure the shoes to the arms. the lower end portion of each arm is provided with a plurality of openings 25 for registration with any of the openings 24 of each shoe, the shoe and arm being connected together by bolts 26 passed through the registering openings. By these means, therefore, the shoes and arms may be adjusted to vary the width of the stanchion when required.
A movable latch member 27 is pivotally secured to the upper end portion of the arm 16 between the bifurcated portions of the bar 19. Said latch member may be manually-pressed against the tension of a coiled spring 28 and the outer engaging end of the latch is notched, as at 29.

Y The bracket member 31V is looped or oval in form, as shown in Fig.4 to permit the bar member 19 to slide therethrough. To adjustably secure the bracket to the bar 18, said baris formed with a plairality'oi openings 32 and the bracket 31 also has an 0pening for registration with, any of the openings '32, whereby the bracket 31 maybe shifted longitudinally for adjustment and retained in any adjusted position by bolt means 33. A link chain 3 iis secured to the upper portion of the bracket 3lffor suspend ing the stanchion. f V V a It will thus be seen that the arms of the stanchion hingedly move on the pivot bolt 23, and that the topbars 18 andl9 are slidably associated. A stanchion, comprising a pair ofivertical channeled arms, one of said arms being bent to form a top extension and the other of said arms having a bifurcated top bar secured thereto slidably engaging said bent extension between said' bifurcated portions,
