K. A. BERAUNENG LOCK Filed May 2, 1925 Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
KARL A. BRAUNING, F STAMFORD, CO
MANUFACTURING COMP This invention locks and has and plug-retaining NNECTIOUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE ANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Application filed May 2, 1925.
relates to improvements in particular reference to stop means for cylinder locks,-one object of the invention being to provide a simple and eiiicient device which shall be operable to perform the twofold function of retaining the plug or rotatable member stop means to limit of a cylinder lock against endwise movement and to be operable as the turning movement by facilitate the insertion or withdrawal of the key.
With this and other in set to invention consists as herelnafter the claims.
objects in view, the certain novel features rth and pointed out in In the accompanying drawings, F igure 1 1s a longitudinal sectional vlew of invention.
Flgure 2 1s a tran a lock showing an embodiment of my verse sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure retaining means omitted.
Figure 4 is a side 1, with the stop and elevation.
Figure 5 is a front end View.
Figure 6 is a rear crating bar in section,
Figure 8 to 14 inclusive, are vlews 1llustrating details.
I have illustrated improvements in con lock of the sliding ploying a flat key,
end view with the opand and will describe my nection with a cylinder tumbler type and embut it will be understood that my said improvements are applicable also to looks of other types, such for example as pin tumbler locks.
At 1 is shown a lock cylinder having re cesses 2 therein for the reception of tumblers 3 carried by the plug or rotatable member 4 of the lock, and an operating bar 5 for bolt mechanism is inserted in one end of and secure manner.
the plug 4 suitable inner end portion of d to the latter in any In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the the cylinder is enlarged interiorly as at 6 and formed with a shoulder 7 against which 5 a shoulder 8 on the plug abuts to prevent longitudinal movement of the latter in one direction.
The projecting inner end portion of the plug is provided with diametrically opposite grooves or notches 9 tion of the cylinder i and the inner end pors made with an annular Serial No. 27,542.
groove 10, the bottom of which is provided of sheet metal is provided with an open slot 13 having straight side edges and this disk is placed on the plug so as to engage in the diametrically opposite grooves thereof, the peripheral portion of the disk overlying the annular groove in the inner end of the'cylinder and thus longitudinal movement of the plug in an outward direction is prevented. The disk 12 is preferably of spring metal and is cut or formed to pro vide a stop finger 14 bent forwardly of the plane of the disk and provided at its free end with a toe 15 to engage in one or the other of the notches 11 in the base of the annular groove 10 of the cylinder. When a proper key is inserted into the plug and turned, the disk 12 will turn with it and the free end of the stop finger 14 will ride through the annular groove until the toe 15' forming the free end portion of the finger 14 enters one of the notches 11, thereby stopping the rotative movement of the plug when the latter has been given a half turn, thus permitting withdrawal of the key. The movement just described may be considered to be the locking movement. When the key is again inserted and the plug given a further half rotation, the stop toe 15 Will be caused to move out of the notch 11, ride through the second half of the annular groove 10 and finally enter the first stop notch 11, thus positioning the plug to permit withdrawal of the key.
It will be understood that when my improvements are applied to a cylinder lock of the pin tumbler type in which the plug is given a complete rotation to operate the lock and permit the withdrawal of the key, a single stop notch 11 will sufiice.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, of a retaining and stop member comprised in a single structure carried by the plug and cooperable with the cylinder.
2. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, of a retaining member carried by the plug and cooperable with the cylinder, said member having a part permanently fixed thereto and cooperable with the cylinder to limit the turning movement of the plug. 7
3. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, of a disk carried by and rotatable with the plug, said disk overlying an inner end portion of the cylinder and provided with a stop finger fixed thereto and cooperable with the cylinder to limit the turning movement of the plug.
a. The combination of a lock cylinder having an annular groove in its inner end, the base of said groove having a stop notch, a turning member in said cylinder, a disk carried by the turning member and cooperating with the cylinder to prevent longitudin-a1 movement in one direction of the turning member, and a spring finger carried by the disk and having a toe to move in the annular groove of the cylinder and engage in the notch in the base of said groove.
5. The combination of a lock cylinder having an internal shoulder and having at its inner end an annular groove provided in its base with. a notch, a plug member rotatable in said cylinder and having a shoulder to engage the internal shoulder of the cylinder, said plug having diametrically opposite grooves, a disk having a slot to receive the grooved portions of the plug and adapted to overlie the grooved inner end portion of the cylinder, said disk having a spring finger normally disposed over a portion of the groove in the cylinder and provided at its free end with a toe to engage in the notch in the base of the groove at the inner end of the cylinder.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
KARL A. BRAUNING.
