portions in different horizontal planes so that it may be readily operated either by a person standing on the ground or by one on the car.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate two forms of release rigging made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end of a car embodying my preferred form of rigging; Fig ure 2 is a sectional view showing the relative positions of the operating and lifting levers; and Figure 31s a perspective view showing a modification.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, the body of the car, indicated at 5, is provided with the usual end sill 6 carrying the. coupler head 7 controlled by lock pin 8. On the end sill 6 is the hand hold 9 in the usual manner. All these parts may be of any usual construction.
Secured to the end sill 6 at about the center of its length is a bracket 10 having an upwardly extending pair of lugs ll between which is pivoted, at point 12, the pin lifting lever 13 the end of which is connected with the lock pin 8 by a link 14. As shown, this link is provided at its lower end with an enlarged head 15 to prevent its disengagement from the eye of the lock pin, and it isretained in the horizontal eye of the lifting lever by a nut 16. Other forms of link may be used to connect the lifting lever with the lock pin, as for example that shown in Figure 3. It is to be noted, however, that a one-piece link without sliding movement may be used in construction because the lifting lever is independent of the operating lever except when the pin is being lifted.
Carried by the bracket 10 is a second pair of lugs 17 arranged at right angles to the lugs 11 and having pivoted between them, at point 18, the inner end of operating lever 19. The operating lever is supported by an extension 20 on the bracket 10, said exten sion being provided with a retaining lip 21 for limiting lateral movement of the lever. Lever 19 extends to a point adjacent to the side of the car in a nearly straight line and is there provided with a hand piece or grip 22, by means of which the lever may be lifted to raise the lock pin by a person on the car,
e. g. on the hand hold 9. Beyond the grip 22 the lever is provided with a downward extension 23 terminating in a' second hand piece or grip 24:, by means of which the lever may be lifted by a person standing on the ground.
In Figure 3 I have shown a modified form of my device. In this modification the link 14 is replaced by a link 143* having at each end a loop similar to the loop shown and described in Patent No. 1,226,859, granted to me May 22, 1917. The operating lever 19 is also differently shaped; in place of extending across the car in a nearly straight line it is bent downwardly and is provided at its lowest point with a straight portion 25 which forms a hand hold corresponding with the grip 241 of the lever first described. Beyond the grip 25 the lever has an upwardly extending portion 26 terminating in a handle 27 corresponding to the grip 22 on the first form of lever.
Where in the specification and claims I have used the term pivoted operating lever I wish to be understood as limiting the structure to one in which the lever moves bodily on a fulcrum in distinction from that in which a rock shaft rotates on its axis.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler lock pin, of a lifting lever connected with said pin, and operating lever pivoted adjacent to its inner end, whereby when liftcdit is adapted to strike said lifting lever to elevate the pin.
- 2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler lock pin, of a lifting lever extending in the direction of the length of the car and connected with said pin, and a pivoted operating lever extending substantially at rig 1t angles to said lifting lever, said operating lever being adapted to strike said lifting lever to elevate the pin when its outer end is raised.
3. In a device of the class described, the.
