The object of the invention is the prov sion. of a device of this character Which is especially designed for use when i'oclc packed send or other hard substances are encountered the drill and cutter constituting the present invention being designed and adapted to sink the hole more rapidly through such formations than other cutters heretofore proposed.

The roller cutters 5. take the form of disks heving teeth 5 on their periphery. l Vith the arrangement shown, a, plurality of roller cutters 5 are provided along each edge of the recess so that in operation the roller cut-- tors 5 opproxii'nately define a ll-shaped recess. I claim 1. In a drill of the character described, a pair of inclined frames defining a \fshaped recess between them, and roller cut ters mounted on the frames and operating along the edges of said V-shaped recesses.
2. In a drill of the character described, a cutter having roller cutters at its forward end provided With long and short teeth, the long teeth being designed. to raise the drill and permit the same to fall to cause the cutter to exert a shattering action on the formation.
3. In a rotary drill, a cutter having roller cutters at its forward end, and having rneans periodically raising the drill and permemes mitting the same to fall so that the cutters exert a shattering action on the formation.
4. In a drill, a cutter including a pair of diverging frames defining a V-shaped recess, a series of roller cutters arranged along the edges of the recess, said frames having extensions, shafts mounted on the extensions, conical cutters arranged on the inner ends of the shafts, and roller cutters arranged on the outer ends of the shafts,
5. In a drill, a cutter including apair of diverging frames defininga V-shaped recess,
a series of roller cutters arranged along the edges of the recess, said frameshaving ex-- tensions, shafts mounted onthe extensions, conical cutters arranged on the inner ends of the shafts, roller cutters arranged on the outer ends of the shafts, and reaming cutters rotatably mounted on the sides of said frames.
