lIMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,695, dated February 9, 1875; application tiled November 17, 1674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LELAND MATTEsoN and WILLIAM MATTEsoN, ot Rochester, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention relates to a peculiar device attached to the draw-bar for the purpose of holding a link in position to couple With another car, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents an ordinaryr cast-iron draw-bar, provided with a suitable pin, B. To sustain the link in a horizontal position preparatory to coupling With another car, an inverted stirrup, E, has its ends dropped through slots in the bottom of the draw-head, and connected by a girt, Which is" pushed or forced down by a leaf-spring, F, secured to the under side of the draw-bar. A bell-crank lever, G, has its shorter arm pivoted through the stirrupgirt, While its longer arm extends up the side of the draw-bar, being pivoted at its angle to a pendent stud, a.
By pullingthe longer arm outwardly the stirrup. is elevated into the socket of the drawhead sufficiently to allow the inner end ofthe link to be slipped under it, When it is held in position by the spring.
Should the outer end of the link strike the lange of the draw-bar approaching it, instead of passing into its socket it Will be pushed back into the socket, sliding under the stirrup Without damage.
What We claim as our invention is rlhe combination, With the draw-bar A, of the stirrup E, spring F, and bell-crank Gr, as and for the purpose set forth.
