My invention relates to a new and improved thread package and has for its object to provide a package adapted for the putting up of thread, such as embroidery cotton or embroidery silk, floss and the like. My invention is particularly applicable for embroidery materials. Heretofore such threads have usually been put up in skein form. V hen such materials are made into skeins, the skein is ordinarily opened up and cut at one point so as to produce a number of equal thread lengths. These cut skeins are ordinarily 'put over the neck of the user and one length is removed at a time. When a skein is so cut, it isimpracticable to re: move less than one length, if that is desired, without wasting the rarnainder of the length. Moreover, when a skein is so cut it is liable to become tangled or snarled, particularly when the work is discontinued before the skein is entirely consumed. Moreover, the thread packages put up in skeins are liable to be affected by handling and moisture and to become soiled. My invention has for its object toovercome each and all of these difficulties and also toprovide a skein in which the goods are exposed for matching without being handled. It furthcr has for its object to provide a package which can be cheaply putup. It furtherhas for its object to provide a package of little bulk which retains any applied trademark, color number, name, or advertising matter'until it is used up. It further has \for its object to produce a package ofipleasingappearance. It further has for its object to provide a package which can be out i in two or more sections for sales purposes, if desired. It further has for its object to provide a package in which there is no waste in winding.

tened oval, closely surrounding the helix and having overlapping portions secured together, as at 10. 12 is a tag which may bear the color number attached to the inner Wall of the tubular core and the outer wall of the tubular sheet, securing the same together at the opposite end from the unwinding end. The envelope may also be secured directly to the core at this point. 14: is a labelwhich may bear the 'makers name, trademark, advertising matter, etc., secured to the outer surface of the envelope.

The core 2 and envelope 8 are tubular members and are made of sheets having their edges secured together. the outer edge of the sheet from which the core is formed and the inner edge of the sheet from which the envelope is formed polnt in the same direction, and in the oppositedirection to the direction of the unwinding end 16 of said helix so gas not to catch,the unwinding thread. For appearance and ease in manufacture the overlapping edges of the envelopeare preferably parallel to the axis of the package as shown Preferably I in Fig. 2. The envelope is preferably made, partly or wholly, of thin practically colorless transparent material. This envelope being transparent, clearly shows the color of the thread upon the core. Cellophane secured by adheslve, or thin sheet gelatin,;may be used. Sheet gelatin is of such character that it becomes adhesivewhen moistened, so that no additional adhesive is necessary for securing the outer flap thereto after wrapping about the thread helix.

In using this package, the unwinding end of the thread is drawn oif' to the desired extent, and after the thread is severed at or near the end of the envelope the remainder of t e goods is visible for matching and matching can be accomplished iwithouthandling the thread. The package is cheaply put up. The package retains the-tra emark, color number, name and advertising matter until used up. The package is a pleasing looking package and can be cut into sections for sales purposes. There is no waste in the winding. The core, on account of its rounded edges, holds the thread so as to prevent the formation of angular kinks therein.

a close wound helix of thread thereon, the thread being of such length as to render it desirable to remove the same in successive sections, and an envelope closely surrounding said helix whereby said envelope permits the envelope vpointing in the opposite direction to th'e'direction of winding of the thread at one end ofsaid helix, said core the transparent envelope when the thread and envelope being secured together adjais partially unwgund so that any trademark or advertising matter printed thereon is visible through the envelope when the thread is removed.

In order to reduce the cost, a section only of the envelopemay be made of the transparent material as shown at 18 in Fig. 5,

the remainder 20 being of paper and secured ,tothe edges of the transparent section.

In making the package, I perform the cores for a plurality of packages in a continuous strip, then wind a helix long enough for a plurality'of packages continuousl on said strip,- then form a continuous env ope about said helix, and then, afterisecuring the overlapping edges of the envelope, sever the core, helix and envelope atintervals to produce packages of the desired length. I preferably wind the helices in close sections with a spaced wind between the sections at the points where the severing is to be done. 7

As will be evident to those skilled in the 'art, my invention permits of various modi fications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.

\Vhat I claim is: i
