This invention relates to improvements in extractors and more especially to asafety device to be used in connection therewith. This invention is an improvement on that described and claimed in my prior Patent .No. 1,444,401, granted February 6, 1923.
One of the objects of the invention is to make it impossible to open the casing of the extractor while the drive is connected with the extractor machine for operation.
Another object of the invention is to make it impossible to open the cover of the.
extractor casing until the machine has come to a full stop.
Still another object of the invention is to make it impossible to connect the extraotor machine with the driving means until the cover of the machine casing; has been closed.
Still another object of the invention is to require a hand manipulation on the part of the operator before the cover of the machine casing can be opened even after the machine has come to a full stop.
Other forms of structure might be devised for the embodiment of this invention but the preferred form will be understood from the following description and claims considered together with the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows in full elevation the whole organization of the extractor casing and meansfor preventing the opening of the cover; Fig. 2 shows a view partly in section taken through the plane of line 22, Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the casing member in another position; Fig. 5 is taken on line 55, Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is taken on line 66, Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a plan view of the extractor casing together with the safety device; and Fig. 8 is a detail view in elevation of part of the safety device on the cover of the extractor casing.
In theoperation of extractors there is considerable danger of the operator opening the casing and inserting his hand into the moving parts of the machine without first taking the precaution of stopping the operation of the machine. With thisinvention it is impossible for the operator to open the cover of the machine casing until the motor has the belt shifting means, and furthermore until the operating shaft of the machine has come to a full stop.
The machine casing 2, with its cover 3, is supported upon the base member 1, which parts enclose the usual mechanism involved in the extractor, and which are not-illustrated in this case since such mechanism is old in the art.
The extractor is driven by means of a belt connection 4 working over idlers 6 and 7 which are mounted upon the bracket 8, the belt 4 passing also about the drive wheel 5 which is fixedly mounted upon shaft 11. Shaft 11 has support upon extensions 8 of bracket 8. The drive wheel 10 is also fixedly mounted upon shaft 11, while the wheel 9 is loosely mounted upon the shaft 11. The drive belt (not shown) can be adjusted back and forth between the wheels 9 and 10 so as to either connect the wheel 5 with the source of power or disconnect it therefrom.
and thereby connect or disconnect the extractor machinery from the source of power. The means for shifting the belt consists of the fingers 12 and 13 fixedly mounted upon the rod 14 which has slidable engagement through the brackets 15 and 16 which are extensions of the main bracket 8. The bracket members 15 and 16 are provided with square openings to receive the correspondingly shaped rod 14 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 7. The one end of rod 14 has pivotal connection as indicated at 18, with the arm 17 the lower end of which is fixedly secured at 20 to the operating rod 19 which can be rocked by means of the lever 21 which is fixedly secured thereto. The bolt hole in the arm 17 for the bolt 18 is elongated so as to allow for play due to swinging of arm 17 on rod 19 as an axis. This operating member 19 is mounted for its rocking movement in a bracket 26 and also in an extension of the bracket 8 which receives the other end of this rod19. The end of the rod 19 which projects through the bracket 26 has secured'thereto at 24 a collar member 23 which carries a segment shaped portion 25 in which there is a slot 25 to receive the segment shaped member 27 which is fixedly mounted upon the rear portion of the cover 3 by being mounted upon pivotal rod 27 which in turn is secured to the hingemember of the cover. A handle 54 is also located on the cover 3.
Thus, it will be seen, so far as already described, when the cover is open and the belt is shifted. to the wheel 9, it will be impossible to shift the belt on to the wheel 10 for driving connection until the cover 3 has been closed. This is true because of the segment shaped member 27 engaging in a slot which makes it impossible to operate the lever 21 and the operating rod 19 which is controlled thereby. Upon closing the cover, however,it will then be possible to shift the belt from the wheel 9 to the drive wheel 10 whereupon the machine will start to operate. But it will be impossible to again open the cover 3 until the segment shaped member 25 has been so rotated as to bring the slot 25 into registry with the segment shaped member 27, or, in other words, until the belt has been shifted from the drive 10 onto the idler 9.
A further means has been providedby which it will be impossible to open the cover until the machine has beenbrought to a full stop. This means comprises a casing member indicated in a general way at. 33 and which is loosely mounted upon the shaft 11. Within this casing member is located another member which is loosely mounted upon the same shaft 11 but which has loose frictional engagement with the shaft 11 under certain conditions of speed. The last named member comprises semi-circular collar. members 37 and 37, one of which carries a pin member 36, while the other carries a counterweight 36 to balance member 36. The collar 3737' is adapted to co-operate with a rod member 30 which is operatively connected with cover 3 so as to prevent the opening of the cover until the machine has come to a full stop.
The rod member 30 has pivotal connection at 29 to the link member 29 which is pivotally connected at 28 with link 28 which in turn is fixedly mounted upon the hinge rod 27 secured to the cover 3. Bolted to the bracket 8 by means of the foot portion 31 is the bracket 31 through which the rod 30 is adapted to pass, the bracket 31 having extensions 32 along the two sides of the casing member 33. As shown in Fig. 3, the casing member 33 comprises a disc member 47 which is secured by means of bolts 45 and 45' to the complementary member 46. 'The member 46 is provided with a flange 56 so as to rovide space between the members 46 an 47 for the. enclosure of the member 37-37. Ears 46' receive bolts 45 and 45. The casing member 33 has a hub 38 which carries agrease cup 40 for the lubrication of the bushing 39. The members 37 and 37' are secured to ether by means of the bolts 42 and 42 w ich pass through the ear meme here 41' and 41. A spring tensionmeans is provided at-43 between the ears 41 and 41' andthe other ends of the bolts 42 and 42 which receive the nuts 44 and the washer members for engagement with the spring. By this means any wear between themembers 37 and 37' and the shaft 11 .will be automatically taken up by the automatic it is. impossi le to open the cover 3 since the rod 30 will abut against a full wall portion of the casing. he shoulder portion 35 then rests upon the bracket 31 due to the action of spring. 53 mounted upon rod '55, and pin 36 rests upon shoulder 35. Then by operation of the rod member 55 attached to casing extension 48 and which is manipulated by pulling handle 52 against the tension of spring 53, the handle end of this rodbeing mounted throu h the bracket 51., the casing member 33 can %8 rotated about its axis soas to bring the opening 34 into alignment with the end of rod 30, as shown in Fig. 4, and it will be noted that pin member36 will remain in the same position with respect to shaft 11 and different with respect to the casing 33. Then the cover 3 can be raised for then the rod 30 can be thrust through the opening 34".
When, however, the machine is in operation, the pin 36 will occupy the dotted line position as shown in Fig. 4, since the collar 37-37' will be carried to this position by frictional engagement with the shaft 11, as above explained. The collar 37--37 when thus moved by the operation of the machine will reach its limit of movement whenit comes against the abutment 35 formed on the casing member 33, the abutment 35 and offset 34 permitting limited relative movement between the casing 33 and the pin 36. Then,
should the operator pull the rod 55 so as to bring the aperture 34 into registry with the end of rod 30, it will then be impossible to open cover 3 since the rod 30 cannot pass through the aperture 34 because of the pin 36 on the opposite side of the aperture. This condition is illustrated in Fig. 4 by the dotted line showing. In order to avoid the danger of the rod 30 slipping by the end of the pin 36 under the conditions just recited,-the adjacent ends of the pin 36 and the rod 30 are beveled as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4.
This device possesses certain distinct advantages in that it is impossible to open the cover 3 without first shifting the belt drive connection to the idler; and it is further necessary for the operator to manipulate the rod 55, and also for the machine to come to a full stop before the cover can be raised at all. As the result of the use of this device it is made impossible for the operator to suffer injury due to contact with the moving parts upon the inside of the casing 2.
Other advantages will suggest themselves to those Who are familiar with the art to which this invent-ion relates.
What I claim is:
1. In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, the other member being mounted for rotary movement by the operator, and means controlled in its operation by the operation of the machine for preventing registering engagement of said members.
2. In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, the other member being under control of the operator, and means rotatably mounted upon the operating shaft of the machine and controlled by the operation thereof for preventing registering engagement of said members.
3. In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, and means having frictional engagement at all times with the operating shaft of the machine and controlled by the operation thereof for preventing registering engagement of said members.
4. In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, the other member consisting of a casing mounted about an axis, the first named member having a radial thrust with respect to said other member, and means controlled by operation of the machine for preventing registering engagement of said members.
5. In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, means having frictional engagement with the operating shaft of said machine and controlled by the operation thereof for preventing registering engagement of said members, and means for automatically maintaining a predetermined degree of friction between said means and said shaft.
6. In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into position for registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, the other of said members being adapted for rotary movement by the operator, spring control means tending to hold said movable member out of position for registering engagement, said means being operable by the operator to impart rotary movement to said movable memberfor effecting registering position of said members.

In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, the other member con'riprising a casing upon the operating sha t of said machine, said casing having an opening adapted to receive the member connected with the cover for allowin open ing of same, a pin member mounte upon and having frictional engagement with said operating shaft within said casing, a counterweight for said pin, said pin adapted to come into registering position with said opening in said casing member to prevent openin of the cover during operation of said shaf 8- In an extractor, a casing, a cover therefor, members adapted to be brought into registering engagement to permit opening of the cover, one of said members being connected with the cover, the other member being under control of the operator, and means controlled in its operation by the operation of the machine for preventing registering. engagement of said members, said means being sensitive at all times to the operation of the machine.
