This invention relates .to a centrifugal machine or separator adapted particularly for drying clothes or other fabrics which have been washed.
The separator has great utility for household use, and has been designed as a part 'of a combined washer and extractor, the general arrangement and construction of which constitutes the subject matter of an earlier co-pending application Serial No. 262,963 filed by me Nov. 18th, 1918. However, the invention may be utilized to advantage with types of separators other than those employed for drying clothes or fabric and may be used independently of the washer.
The present invention is an improvement over the machine disclosed and claimed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 262,966, filed Nov. 18, 1918, and is in part a continuation of said application.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide certain safety devices which render the operation of a machine of this character safe, and which, specifically, prevent the extractor being started in operation except when the lid of the extractor curb is closed and locked, and which prevent the unlocking of the lid while the extractor is in oper ation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extractor operating mechanism in which the rotary extractor basket is operated by a motor through driving connections which include means for connecting and disconnecting the motor and basket and to provide, in connection with the motor controlling means and basket driving means, a safety device which will prevent the operation of the motor controlling means to start the motor except when the motor and basket are disconnected.
A further object is to provide safety dc- 'vices in connection with the lid of the extractor curb, the motor controlling means and the driving connections between the motor and extractor basket which will insure the proper sequence of operations in starting the extractor. A further object is to provide means on the extractor basket which will cooperate with the lock for bolding the curb lid in closed position to prevent the unlocking of the lid during the operation of the extractor.
A further objectis to provide means on the curb engageable with the shiftable member which controls the connection between the extractor basket and the driv-- ing means for locking the shiftable member 1n neutral or oil position and to provide a locking member on the curb lid adapted in its movement to locking position to engage the locking means on the curb to move the same out of locking engagement with the shiftable member.
The following description and accompanymg drawings set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, the CllSClOFQd means, however, constituting but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be employed.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the machine with a portion of the frame, curb and basket broken away and shown in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken centrally of the curb; Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking toward the side of the machine upon which the controlling devices are mounted; Fig. 4: is a horizontal section taken on a plane beneath the extractor basket and curb and fragmentary portion of the top of the curb being shown in order to show the lever locking device; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of the machine; Fig. 6 is a view showing the motor controlling switch and circuit breaker; Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig; 1.
As above stated the extractor is preferably part of a combined washer and extractor and the accompanying drawings show a portion of the angle iron supporting frame work 1 of a combined washer and extractor, the curb 2 of the extractor being supported at one end of the frame with the top of the curb projecting slightly above the frame work. A slightly inclined decking 3 is rigidly secured to the top rails of the frame work and extends from the curb 2 to the tub 4 as shown in Fig. 5 to drain back into the tub the water which drips from the clothes as they are transferred from the tub t0 the extractor.
The curb 2 is rigidly clamped within the top portion of the frame and has a cylindrical wall 5 which has an inwardly extending upwardly inclined flange 6 forming the fixed part of the top of the curb and a cir-.
cular central opening 7 which is provided with a. lid 8 connected at one side of the opening to the fixed portion of the curb by means of a hinge 9 and carrying a pivoted locking bar 10 on its underside which has a part. engageable withthe underside of the flange (3 opposite the hinge 9. The curb 2 has a substantially flat bottom 1.1 in which there is a central opening 12, the bottom 11 around the opening 12 being provided with an upturned flange 13 to prevent the escape of water through the opening 12. A drain pipe 1a is connected to the flat portion of the bottom 11 of the curb and may extend to the drain outlet of the washer tub.
Within the extractor curb 2 is mounted a rotary extractor basket 15 which is carried upon the upper end of a vertical gyratory shaft 16 which is supported at its lower end in a yieldable bearing 17 and is driven by means which will he hereinafter described from an electric motor 18 mounted upon the frame work between the shaft 16 and the end of the washer tub. The basket 15 has a substantially flat bottom 19 which is rigidly secured to the flanges of a collar 20 fixed to the upper end vof the shaft- 16. The basket 15 has a cylindrical perforated wall 21 concentric with the cylindrical wall 5 of the curb and spaced inwardly therefrom. At the top of the basket there is a flange extendng inwardly and upwardly from the cylindrical wall 21. the flange 22 being parallel with the flange ti of the curb and spaced downwardly therefrom, the extractor basket having a central opening 23 which registers with the central opening (3 at the top of the curb. The basket 15 is provided with a central hollow cone 24, the base of which is rigidly secured to the bottom 19 of the basket and the apex of which lies centrally of the opening 7 in the top of the curb.
When the lid 8 is open, clothes which have been washed in the washer may be transferred over the decking 3 and deposited in the basket 15. After closing and locking the lid 8, the extractor basket may be rotated at a high speed by the motor 18 until the liquid remaining in the clothes or other fabrics is thrown by centrifugal force through the perforated wall 21. The water thrown from the materials within the basket 15 is caught by the bottom 11 of the curb and is drained off through the drain conduit 14.
A pulley 25, which has a lower substantially bell-shaped portion surrounding the yieldable bearing 17, is fixed to the lower portion of the shaft 16. A pulley 26 in horizontal alignment with the driving portion of the pulley 25 is fixed to the lower end of the vertically disposed shaft 27 of the motor 18 and has a driving connection with the pulley 25 through a horizontally dis posed belt 28 which extends around the two pulleys. A fixed guard 29 extends partially around the pulley 25 on the side thereof away from the motor and serves to maintain the belt 28 in fairly close engagementwith the pulley 25. The belt 28 is nor mally loose and is provided with a tightening pulley 31 which is movable toward and from the belt to draw the belt into tight eugagemcnt with the pulleys 25 and 26 or to release the same. The belt tightcuer serves to connect or disconnect the motor and extract-or basket, means being provided to supportthe belt out of engagement with the pulley 26 when the tightener is released and in position to be drawn into engagcment when the belt is tightened. The belt releasing and holding means per se is not material to the present invention and is not shown in detail, the belt drive employed herein being fully disclosed in my co-peuding application No. 633,972, April 23, 1923. The pulley 31 is mounted upon the end of a horizontally swinging arm 82 which is fixed to a vertical pivot shaft 323 which is journaled in the base of the frame and projects upwardly from the arm 32. Fixed in the upper end of the pivot shaft 83 is a head 3 1- which has outwardly extending lugs :15 and 36 arranged at right angles to each other. An upwardly extending arm 37 fixed to a horizontal shaft 38 journaled in the frame beneath the belt 28 engages with the lugs and 36 to turn the shaft 33 in a direction to shift the tightener pulley 31 into and out of engagement with the belt 28. To the outer end of the horizontal shaft 38 is fixed an arm 39 in the form of a bar which extends upwardly therefrom and has sliding engagement. with the outer side of a pivoted lock and switch controlling lever 71. which lies within the top rail 10 of the frame and which will be hereinafter described in do tail. The bar 39 is preferably made of spring metal and is arranged to engage the outer face of the lever 71 with spring pres-- sure so that there is a frictional resistance to the movement of the bar 39 along the inner side of the rail 40. Just beneath the rail 40 the lever arm 39 has rigidly attached thereto a handle 4-1 which projects outwardly and is adapted to be gripped by the operator to swing the lever 39 forwardly and forwardly and backwardly to connect the shaft 16 to the motor or to disconnect the shaft from the motor. A coil spring 12 is connected at one end to the upper end of the arm 37 and at its other end to a fixed portion of the frame so that it normally tends to swing the arm 37 in a direction to force the pulley 31 into engagement with the belt. The shaft 38 has an arm 13 rigidly secured thereto intermediate its ends. The arm 43 has its free end beneath the pulley 25 and carries a brake shoe 44- which engages with the under face of the pulley 25 upon movement of the shaft 38 in a direction to shift the tightener 31 outwardly away from the belt 28. The brake shoe 44 engaging the pulley 25 at the same time that the driving connection to the motor is broken, serves to bring the extractor basket quickly to rest. By reason of the fact that the coil spring 42 always tends to move the tightener pulley 31 into tighter engagement with the belt, any stretch in the belt will be automatically taken up. By reason of the frictional engagement between the lever 39 and rail 40, vibratory movements of the tightener pulley 31 will be prevented since the frictional drag on the lever 39 will resist outward movements of the pulley 31. The tension of the spring 42, however, is sulficient to maintain the pulley .31 in tight engagement with the belt. The clutch device above described is not claimed in this application but is claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 638,972 filed of even date herewith.
The electric motor 18 is controlled by a suitable switch within the switch box 45 secured to the frame work adjacent the upper side rail 40 thereof. The switch is adaptedto be closed by means of a push button 46 which projects through the side wall of the box 45 and is normally held by spring pressure in its outermost or disengaged position. The switch is closed by pressing the button 46 inwardly against the action of the spring and is held in closed position by means of a detent 47 which is connected with a second push button 48 which projects through the wall of the box 45 above the starting push button 46. When the switch is held in closed position with' the push button 46 pushed in, the detent 47 may be operated at any time to release the switch and push button by pressing on the switch releasing button 48.
An automatic overload release is also provided in the form of a solenoid 49 containing a plunger which will be operated to engage the detent 47 and release the switch when the current in the solenoid coil reaches the predetermined value.
In the operation of the machine after the clothes have been placed in the extractor basket 15, the lid 8 of the curb should first be closed and locked and the lever 39 should be in neutral position with the belt 28 disengaged from the pulley 26 when the motor is started so that the full load will not be imposed upon the motor when starting. The proper sequence of operations. therefore, is to first close the lid 8 and lock it by means of the handle 50 actuating the bar 10, start the motor 18 by pressing the push button 46 and then shift the lever 39 to establish the driving connection between the motor and extractor basket. It is desirable that the lid locking means, the device for connecting the basket to the motor and the motor contro'lling means be provided with controlling devices which will prevent operation of the extractor basket until the curb lid is closed and locked, which will prevent the unlocking .of the curb lid after the basket is started in operation, which will prevent operation of the drive control lever 39 until after the lid is closed and locked and which will prevent the starting of the motor except when the controlling lever 39 is in neutral or ofif position. The present invention relates more particularly to the devices which will now be cflescfiibed for effecting the results above set ort The lid locking bar 10 is fixed to the lower end of a handle 50 which is rotatably mount ed in the lid 8. The locking bar 10 has at one end a downwardly offset curb engaging portion 51 and a portion 52 on the opposite side of the pivot which lies closely adjacentthe underside of the lid 8 and projects past the center thereof. The locking bar 10 is so arranged that when the curb engaging portion 51 is moved to locking position, the oppositely projecting portion 52 will move across the axis of rotation of the basket 15. Mounted within the cone 24 of the basket are a pair of weights 53 which have upwardly extending arms 54 and 55 suspended from horizontal pivots 56 and 57 carried by a cross bar 58 fixed to the cone and located upon opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the basket. A vertical pin 59 is slidably mounted at the axis of the cone, the upper end of the pin being movable in a bearing v60 in the point of the cone and through a plate 61 fixed to the cone above the cross-bar 58. The pin 59 has a disk 62 fixed to its lower end which rests upon the upper ends of the arms 54 and 55 of the weights. The pin 59 is of such length that when the basket is at rest its upper end is substantially flush with the point of the cone 24. Upon rotation of the basket, however, the weights 53 will be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force and the upper ends of the arms 54 and 55 will engage with the disk 62 forcing the pin 59 upwardly to a position in which its upper end projects above the apex of the cone 24 and is adjacent the underside of the cover 8. The portion 52 of the lock bar 10 is normally movable freely back and forth above the point of the cone 24, permitting the lid 8 to be locked before the basket 15 is rotated. As before stat ed. when the lock bar 10 moves to locking position, the portion 52 thereof move-s past the axis of rotation of the basket so that should it be attempted to unlock the lid 8 while the basket 15 is being rotated, the portion 52 of the lock bar will strike against the upwardly projecting pin 59 and prevent disengagement of the locking portion 51 of the bar from the flange 6 of the curb.
In addition to the means for preventing the opening of the lid during the operation of the basket, means are also provided for preventing rotation of the basket until the lid 8 is closed and locked. The controlling means above referred to is housed within a hollow head 63 at the edge of the decking 3 and upon the top of the side rail 40 of the frame and in a casing which extends 1nwardly from the head 63 and is formed by an inverted channel member 64 which is suitab'ly secured to the flange 6 of the curb and extends from the head 62 to adjacent the inner edge of the flange 6. An L-shape-d lever locking member 65 has an arm 66 extending inwardly within the channel member 64 and terminating in a downturned end 67 which projects through a slot in the flange 6 and is adapted to be engaged by the curved edge of the locking portion 51 of the lid locking bar 10. The locking member 65 has a forwardly extending arm 68 lying within the bead 63 with its outer end bearing upon the top of the rail 40 and movable into and out of the path of movement of the upper end of the lever 39. A coil spring 69 lies alongside the arm 66 within the casing 64 and is connected at its inner end to the casing 64 and at its outer end to the locking member 65 adjacent the bend thereof. The coil spring 69 normally holds the locking member 65 in its innermost position with the arm 68 thereof in the path of movement of the lever 39, the arm 68 being so positioned that the lock ing lever 39 is locked in neutral or oil position. When the locking bar 10 is operated to swing the locking portion 51 thereof under the flange 6 of the curb, the curved face of the locking portion 51 will engage with the downturned end 67 of the locking member 65 and force the locking member 65 outwardly against the action of the spring 69, shifting the end of the arm 68 out of the path of the lever 39 so that the lever 39 can be operated to establish a driving connection between the motor and extractor basket. The locking portion 51 of the lock bar is preferably provided with a notch 70 which engages with the downturned end 67 of the locking member 65 to releasably hold the locking bar in locking position.
A latch bar 71 is pivotally connected to the rail 40 by means of a horizontal pivot 72 located between the lever 39 and the switch box 45. The latch bar 71 has a notch 73 on the underside thereof which engages with a pin 74 projecting inwardly from the inner side of the lever 39. A spring 75 is connected at one end to the latch bar 71 and at its other end to the rail 40 serving to normally hold the latch bar 71 in engagement with the pin 74 on the lever 39 so that when the lever 39 is in neutral or off position, the pin 74 will be engaged in the notch 73 of the latch bar whereby the lever 39 is locked in neutral position. Beyond the notch 73, the latch bar 71 has a downwardly curved extension 76 which engages with the pin 74 on the lever 39 during the movement of the lever from and to neutral position. The extension 76 has its end portion cut away on the upper side at 77 to engage with a fixed part 78 of the frame which limits the up ward movement of the bar. The portion of the latch bar 71 upon the opposite side of the pivot v72 is curved downwardly and overlies the switch box 45, the end portion 79 of the latch bar lying directly over the push button 46 and preventing manual operation thereof when the latch bar 71 is shifted to a position which permits movement of the lever 39 to establish a driving connection between the motor 18 and the extractor basket 15. By reason of the fact that whenever the lever 39 is in other than neutral position, the end 79 of the latch bar covers the starting push button 46, it is impossible to start the motor 18 except when the lever 39 is in neutral position and the ex tractor basket is disconnected from the motor.
In the operation of the machine the lid 8 will be opened and the clothes will be transferred from the tub 4 over the decking 3 and inserted into the basket 15. The curb lid will then be closed and the locking bar 10 moved to locking position. The movement of the locking bar 10 to locking position will shift the arm 68 of the locking member 65 out of the path of the controlling lever 39. The push button 46 will then be operated to start the motor and the latch bar 71 lifted to free the lever 39 which will then be shifted to connect the motor 18 with the extractor basket to drive the same. Upon rotation of the extractor basket 15 the stop pin 59 will be moved upwardly into the path of the portion 52 of the locking bar, making it impossible to unlock the lid 8 while the basket is being rotated. Should the motor controlling switch be automatically released due to an overload after the lever 39 has been shifted to connect the motor to the basket, it will be necessary to first move the lever 39 to neutral or 0 position in order to shift the portion 79 of the latch bar clear of the push button 46 to permit the push button to be operated to restart the motor. If it should happen that the lever 39 has been left in on position while the basket was being filled and the lid locked in closed position, it will be necessary to move the lever 39 to neutral position in order to permit operation of the push button 46 to start the motor.
By means of the devices above described, I have made it impossible to operate the controlling members in other than the proper sequence, have made it impossible to operate the basket except when the lid of the curb is closed and locked, and have made it impossible to unlock the lid of the curb during the operation of the extractor.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, means for locking the lid in closed position, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, a motor for driving the basket, means for starting and stopping the motor, means for connecting and disconnecting the motor and basket, means controlled by the last mentioned means for preventing the operation of the motor starting means except when the motor and basket are disconnected, and means controlled by the lid locking means for preventing the connection of the motor to the basket to drive the same except when the lid is closed and locked.
2. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a movable locking member for holding the lid in closed position, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, a motor for driving the basket, means for starting and stopping the motor, driving means between the motor and basket, means including a shiftable member for connecting and disconnecting the motor and basket, means controlled by the lid locking member for preventing the operation of the shiftable member to connect the motor to the basket except when said lid is closed and locked, and means operated by said shiftable member for preventing the operation of the motor starting means except when said motor and basket are disconnected.
3. In an extractor, acurb having a lid, a movable locking member on the lid adapted to engage a fixed portion of the curb, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, a motor for driving the basket, means for starting and stopping the motor, driving means between the motor and basket, means including a shiftable member for connecting and disconnecting the motor and basket, means controlled by the lid locking member for preventing the operation of the shiftable member to connect the motor to the basket except when said lid is closed and locked, means operated by the shifta-ble member for preventing the operation of the motor starting means except when sa1d motor and basket are disconnected, and means operable during the rotation of the basket to prevent movement of the lid locking member to lid releasing position.
4. In an extractor, a rotary basket, a motor, means for driving the basket from the motor, means for connecting and disconnecting the basket and motor, means for starting and stopping the motor, and means operable when the motor is connected to the basket to prevent the operation of the motor starting means. i
5. In an extractor, a rotary basket, an electric motor, means for driving the basket from the motor, a manually operable switch having an overload release associated therewith, means including a shiftable member for connecting and disconnecting the basket and driving means, and means operated by said shiftable member for rendering said switch inaccessible for manual operation.
6. The combination with an extractor shaft and driving mechanism therefor including a motor adapted to be connected to and disconnected from the shaft, of an automatic circuit breaker in the motor circuit and adapted to be opened when the current reaches a predetermined Value, and means for preventing the closure of the circuit breaker when the motor is connected to the shaft to drive the same.
7. In an extractor, a rotary basket, a motor, means for driving the basket from the motor, means for connecting and disconnecting the basket and motor, manually operable means for starting the motor, means operable when the motor is connected to the basket to prevent the operation of the motor starting means, and manually operable means for stopping the motor at any time after it is started.
8. In an extractor, a supporting frame, an extractor basket rotatably mounted in the frame, an electric motor, means for driving the basket from the motor, means including a lever at one side of the frame for connecting and disconnecting the basket and motor, a switch box having a push button switch and an automatic overload release device for opening the switch, and a member pivoted on the frame having a portion extending into the path of movement of the lever whereby said member is shifted about its pivot when said lever is moved in a direction to connect the basket to the motor, said member having a portion movable to a position over the push button to render the same inaccessible when the motor is operatively connected to the basket.
9. In an extractor, arotary basket, an electric motor, means for driving the basket from the motor, means including a shiftable member movable from and to a neutral position for connecting and disconnecting the motor and basket, a switch box enclosing a switch for starting and stopping the. motor, said switch being provided with closing and opening push buttons projecting through a wall thereof, a latch bar having a locking engagement with the shiftable member When said member isin neutral position and having a part cngageable with said member in the movement thereof from neutral position, said latch bar having a portion which is held in a position closely overlying the starting push button when the shiftable member is in other than neutral position.
10. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, driving means for rotating the basket, a
movable controlling member for the driving means, locking means normally acting to hold the controlling member against movement to start the rotation of the basket, and a locking member carried by the lid and engageable with a part of the curb to hold the lid in closed position, said locking member when moved to locking position engaging said locking means to release said movable controlling member.
11. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, a shaft for rotating the basket, means for driv ing the shaft, a movable controlling member for the driving means, locking means carried by the lid and adapted to engage a part of the curb for holding the lid in closed position, and means adapted to be shifted by said lid locking means for holding said controlling member against movement to start the shaft.
12. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, driving means for rotating the basket, a controlling member for said driving means shiftable from and to a neutral position to start and stop the basket, means for locking said controlling member in neutral pos tion, a movable locking member carried by the lid and adapted to engage a part of the curb for holding the lid in closed position and adapted in the movement thereof to release said locking means, and means controlled by the rotation of the basket for preventing the movement of the locking member to lid releasing position.
13. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a movable locking member for holding the lid in closed position, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, a shaft for rotating the basket, driving means for the shaft, a controlling member adapted to be shifted from and to neutral position to start and .stop the basket, and means for preventing the shifting of said controlling member from neutral position when the lid is unlocked, said means comprising a device separate from the lid and positioned in the path of movement of the controlling member when the lid is unlocked and adapted to be engaged by the locking member when the same is moved to locking position.
14. In an extractor, a supporting frame, a curb havinga lid mounted upon the top portion of the frame, a vertical shaft supported upon the base portion of the machine, driving means connected to the lower portion of said shaft, an open top basket carried by the upper end of the shaft and positioned Within the curb, means for connecting and disconnecting the driving means from the shaft including a lever extending from the base to one side of the frame adjacent the curb and movable from and to a neutral position to connect and disconnect the driving means, locking means mounted on a fixed portion of the curb and having a portion movable into and out of the path of movement of the lever to lock the same in neutral position, a spring normally holding said locking means in engagement with the lever and a locking member movably mounted upon the lid and engageable with the fixed portion of the curb to hold the lid in closed position, said locking member upon movement into locking engagement with the fixed portion of the curb engaging with said looking means to shift the same out of the path of movement of the lever.
15. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a movable locking member for holding the lid in closed position, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, means for rotating the basket, a movably mounted member carried by the basket and mounted within the same beneath the lid, and means operable upon rotation of the basket for shifting said movable member into the path of movement of the locking member.
16. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, means for rotating the basket, a locking member for holding the lid in closed position, said member having a part within the lid above the basket and movable across the central portion of the basket, a vertically movable detention member carried by the basket adjacent the center thereof and means operable upon rotation of the basket for moving said detention member into the path of movement of said part of the look ing member.
17. In an extractor, a curb having a lid, a releasable locking member for holding the lid in closed position,- said locking member having a part movable beneath the lid when the same is closed, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, means for rotating the basket, and a movable detention means carried by the basket and adapted to be operated by centrifugal force to shift a part thereof into the path of movement of said movable part of the locking member to prevent movement thereof to lid releasing position during the rotation of the basket.
18. In an extractor, a curb having an opening, a basket adapted to be rotated in the curb, driving means for rotating the hasket, a hinged lid for closing the opening in the curb, a movable locking member mounted on the lid and engageable with a fixed part of the curb to hold the lid in closed position, centrifugal weights rotatable with the baskets, and a stop member connected with said weights whereby it is moved toward the lid upon rotation of the basket, said stop member projecting into the path of movement of the locking member to prevent movement thereof to lid releasing position during rotation of the basket.
19. In an extractor, a curb having an opening, a basket rotatable about a vertical axis beneath the opening in the curb, driving means for rotating the basket, a locking bar pivoted to the under side of the lid, said bar having a locking portion extending in one direction from the pivot and engageable with a fixed part of the curb to hold the lid in closed position and a tail portion extending in the opposite direction from the pivot and movable across the under side of the lid, :1 central conical chamber at the center of the basket extending from the base therewill he moved vertically thereby upon rotation of the basket into the path of movement of the tail portion of the locking bar to prevent movement of said bar to lid releasing position during rotation of the basket.
