UNIVERSAL CASH-DRAWER CABINET FOR BEGISTERS.
Application Aled July 14, 1924. Serial No. 728,029.
This invention relates to a cash drawer containing cabinet which is adapted to be independently associated with substantially all present comercial makes of registers and detachably sup ort the same and be simultaneously opera le with and by the operating element of the register. This application is a continuation in part of my copending a plication, Serial No. 412,694, filed Septem er 25, 1920. The form of the invention disclosed herein is the preferred specific form of the generic invention which is common to this form and that disclosed in th'e copending application.
The chief ob]ect of the invention is to .construct a latching mechanism that is universally and readily adjustable to any operating member of substantially any one of all the present commercial registers, whereby the combination of the cash drawer, cabinet and the register forms a cash register.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the construction of the drawer latch and the provision of an adjustable rigid lever extension.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a register, a cash drawer and cabinet therefor supporting said register. Fig. 2 is an enlar ed side elevational view of the preferred orm of the invention, part of the cabinet and drawer being shown in section to illustrate other parts in detail, said construction being shown in the latched position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same parts illustrating them in the released or actuated position. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevational view of a portion ef the actuating mechanism of the latch and diagrammatic outlines of the limit of movement or lower limiting position of the respective operating elements of substantially all commercial types of registers. Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 6 is an end eleva- `tional view of the same.
In the drawings 10 indicates a cabinet having a top 11 and a drawer 12. The top rt any one of a'number of substantially al of r the present models of'commercial registers 4herein indicated by the numeral` 13 `and having an operating shaft 14 actuatable by a handle 15.
The re 'ster is entirely detachable from the cash rawer cabinet, and .is merely positionable thereon. If desired, however, it may be attached to the drawer, 'but the weight of the machine generally is sufficient to maintain it in the desired position.
The drawer 12includes a back portion 16, and u on the outside thereof, there is supporte and secured a coiled spring 17 which 1s adapted to have its free endjbear upon a bearing plate 18 secured to the back of the cabinet. tion, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, there is a lever latch 19, the free end 2O of which is adapted to abut the back 16 of the drawer and prevent outward movement of the drawer'under the influence of the spring 17 when the lever latch is tilted upon its pivot in opposition to the spring 20. The spring 20 is suitably secured in a recess 21 formed in the top 11 and normally tends to force the lever latch 19 into the latching position.
The lever latch 19 includes an offset por-` tion 22, and said offset portion adjustably but rigidly supports an extension arm 23 including the offset bearing plate 24 engageable by the handle 15 of the register for tilting the lever 19 upon its pivot. As shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, the top 11 is apertured as at 25 and the offset or lateral portion 22 extends through said opening or aperture. Closing said opening is a pivot supporting plate 26 including the pivot 27 adapted to pivotally support the lever 19. Herein the pivot supporting plate is shown providing a pivot above the top 11. The lever 19 is extended beyond the offset portion and terminates in a support 29 which includes an elongated slot 28. The free end of the lever extension 29 indicated by the numeral 30 is suitably housed by the housing 31 suitably secured to the top 11 ofthe cabinet. The housin -31 limits movement of the lever in both irections, and particularly in the latching direction in opposition to the spring 20.
The bracket 32 is provided with a pair of lateral projections 33 which are receivable by the slot 28 in the extension 29 of the lever 19. The bracket 32 is providedupon the side opposite from said extensions 33 with a ledge 34. A nut vor dat headed bolt is adapted'to bear against said'ledge 34 and Projecting into the drawer por-v limit the turning movement but permit slidl ing movement of a bolt 35 which is slidable arm 23 as well as the angular adjustment thereof with respect to the bracket 32 and the bracket 32 is also longitudinally adjustable upon the extension 29 and is prevented from turning movement with respect thereto by means of the angular'projections 33.
Universal adjustability of the bearin porj tion 24 carried by the arm 23 is thus o tainable so that the external operating member or handle of any one or substantially all of the commercial registers can engage said projection and through the adjustable extension or arm 23, trip or tilt the latch leverl 19 out of latching position, thereby releasing the cash drawer 12.
In Figs. 5 and 6, there is illustrated a modified form of the invention. In this form of the invention the aperture 25 of the top 11 is not closed by the pivotal support, but herein the pivotal support 127 is provided by a suitable bracket 126 suitably secured to theunder face of the top 11. The latching lever 119 carries an offset or lateral extension 122 that projects upwardly through the aperture 125 of the top 11. Said extension terminates in an arcuate, and here in circular radially corrugated portion 129. Said radially corrugated portion is provided with a central aperture, and associated therewith is a bracket member 132 having a similar face whereb radial adjustment is secured through tie medium of the bolt 135 with which is associated a wing nut as shown. The bracket 132 also supports a bolt 137. The arm or extension 123 is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slot 136, and said elongated slot is adapted to receive the bolts 135 and 137 whereby the arm 123 may be adjusted longitudinally with respect to the bracket 132. Said bracket 132 includes a'transverse lug 133 receivable by the slot 136 and the foregoing arrangement likewise provides for substantiall universal adjustability.
Wly-iile the invention has been described in great detail in the foregoing specifications, it is to be understood that various modifications thereof will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which the invention applies in addition to those herein illust-rated, as well as suggested, and all of said modifications are considered to be within the broad purview of the invention, reference bein had to the appended claims, for the broad idea of the invention consists in the rigid, adjustable extension for a latching lever controlling a 4cash drawer contamed within a cabinet adapted to support any one of a number of commercial registers, the exterior operating element of which is adapted to engage the rigid adjustable extension and simultaneously release the drawer and operate the register, thereby providing that a single model dash drawer cabinet is universally adaptable to any com- \mercial register for transforming any register and a cash drawer into a cash register at but a relatively small additional cost.

3. The combination with a register having an operating element, and a cabinet stand therefor and having a drawer therein and including an apertured top, of a control for said drawer including a lever extending through the aperture thereof and movable therein, a bracket closing the aperture and pivotally supporting the' lever, and an extension rigidly but adjustably connected to said lever for universal adjustability, where by the operating elements of a plurality of dissimilar registers are adapted to be interchangeably engaged thereby for releasing the drawer.
4. The combination with a register having an operating element, and a cabinet stand therefor and having a drawer therein and including an apertured top, of a control for said drawer including a lever pivotally supported by said top and having an o'set portion extending through the aperture and movable therein, and an extension rigidly but adjustably connected to said lever for universal adjustability, whereby the operating elements of a plurality of dissimilar registers are adapted to be interchange-ably engaged thereby for releasing the drawer.
5. The combination with a register having an operating element, and a cabinet stand therefor and having a drawer therein and including an apertured top, of a control for said drawer including a lever pivotally supported above and by the top and having an oifset portion extending through the aperture and movable therein, and an extension rigidly but adjustably connected to said lever for universal adjustability, whereby the operating,r elements, of a plurality of dissimilar registers are adapted to be interchange-ably engaged thereby for releasing' the drawer.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto af- 20 fixed my signature.
JOSEPH RALPH SHOWERS.
