IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CAMP-STOOLS.

Specification forming partof Letters Patent N0. 159,654, dated February 9,1875; application filed September 10,1874.

To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, EDWARD DUcKER, of Springfield, Hampden county, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Folding Camp-Stool, of which the following is a speci fication The object of my invention is the construction of a portable folding camp-stool, the standard, legs, and arms of which, being east of metal separately, may be securely united wit-hout the intervention of rivets, screws, or other separate auxiliary parts, to support the seat, and to fold without becoming detached, to be bound in a compact bundle by the detached seat constructed for the purpose.

In the drawings, Figure I is a view of the stool set up for use. Fig. II is a View of it folded. Fig. III shows it ready for transportation, and Figs. IV and V are detail views.

To a ycenter piece or standard, B, which is formed of metal, and as light as is consistent with strength, I hinge the metallic arms A A A and legs D D D. rlhe ends of the standard B are dished to afford without bearing-surfaces for the arms and feet in planes coincident (or nearly so) with the radiating arms land legs, and Within to leave parallel surfaces to enable the walls thus made to be embraced between the bases of each arm and leg and the locking-buttons thereon, and in the case ofthe arms to recess their ends when swung down. Upon the ends of the arms A A A are shoulders a. a., to support the seat G when its eyes g'g g are hooked over the ends of the arms. The triangular seat G may be formed of carpet, canvas, or other liexible material suitable to the purpose, and I provide it on its under side With a handle, F, and hook s, for a purpose hereinafter described, and upon each of its three corners with metallic eyes g g g, for the purpose of securing,r it to the arms A A A, as aforesaid. Through the sides of the upper dished end, against which bear the arms, I cut oblong openings o o o, wide enough to admit the bases of the arms, and thus permit the arms to he swung down against the standard B, as Shown in Fig. II, and upon the bases I pla-ce' locking-buttons. m m m, that hold the arms to their bearing-surfaces when the arms are pushed down until the stems connecting the buttons are against the bottom of the openings 0, but which permit the arms to be slided up until their ends can be swung into the openings o, to allow the arms to be folded down against the sides of the standard B. Lugs b b, while permitting the arms to be inserted in their place in the standard B and offering no obstacle to their being swung, securely hold them from having any lateral movement when supportin g the seat G. The legs D D D I lock in the same manner when in use by buttons d d d, but as the legs require t0 be curved for greater strength, not being united at their ends, as in the case of the seat, I swing them sidewise to come against the standard, first extending the legs until the bases clear the lugs h, which hold them in place when the stool is in use. The two dished ends are united by three flanges radiating from a common center, which, while affording the necessary strength, partially recess both, the arms and legs, and the whole standard presents a design uniting both use and beauty.

When the stool is prepared for transportation its legs and arms are folded, as seen in Fig. II, and the seat Gr is wrapped around these to leave the handle F outside, and one eye, g, is brought over the hook s. seen in Fig. Ill. By these means a portable stool is formed admirably adapted for tourists, artists, and others having limited transportation.

Now, having described my invention, what I claim is In combination with the cast metallic standard B, having the ends formed to afford interior and exterior bearing-surfaces, and provided with the lugs lL b and openings o, the arms A A A, and legs D D D, with their locking-buttons d m and shoulders. as set forth.
